The Assault Shotgun in GTA V is based on the UTAS UTS-15 which is a Turkish Shotgun. It features picatinny rails that make it possible to use this weapon with attachments. A suppressor, grip and flashlight can be attached to this weapon. The muzzle has slots and is fitted with a flash guard. The gun can be used with an extended clip that increases the mag capacity to 32 rounds. The extended clip is circular, in the shape of a drum magazine. It has a fully automatic configuration and does not fire like the bullpup or the pump shotgun.
This is a very powerful weapon when used at close range. The Assault Shotgun does 32 damage per pellet and shoots 6 pellets in a single shot. As the gun is fully automatic, multiple shots can be fired one after the other, quickly, making the gun very effective in close and medium range gunfights.
At close range targets with armor can also be taken down in a single shot but at medium or and little longer ranges it takes more than one shot to take down a target. The extended clip increases the magazine size from 8 to 32 rounds giving it a massive buff. An attached grip makes the gun more stable when continuously firing the Assault Shotgun.
The use of a suppressor with this gun can tend to decrease its performance at medium range.

From a mechanical point of view, the Assault Shotgun makes little sense. The UTS-15's original loading port is used in-game as the weapon's ejection port. However, the weapon's magazine is loaded ahead of the ejection port, resulting in a quite odd arrangement.
The Assault Shotgun originally fired eight pellets per shot, as with most shotguns in-game, which allowed the weapon to score a maximum of 256 damage per shot. The amount of pellets was later reduced to six after the Ill-Gotten Gains Part 1 update to balance the weapon's effectiveness at longer ranges.
