Towtruck in GTA 5

(The smaller version of the Towtruck)

The Towtruck is a vehicle in GTA V manufactured by Vapid. The Towtruck belongs to the Utility vehicle class in GTA V. There are two different types of tow trucks in the game; one smaller and the other larger, with the body being more like a truck. The smaller tow truck doesn’t appear in any missions in GTA V and can be modified while the larger truck cannot be modified, and appears in multiple missions in GTA V.

Design and Performance

Smaller Version

This Towtruck has a functional towing hitch and roof lights. Its body has an old and rusty texture even after being resprayed. The headlights have circular lamps placed inside squarish light covers. The front bumper is protected by a metal guard which also appears to be rusted and old. Both front and rear bumpers carry license plates. The primary color is applied to the lower half of the body and the secondary color to the upper half, including the roof. This vehicle is powered by a single-cam V8 engine with four double barrel carburetors and a 4-speed gearbox.

Larger Version

This version of the Towtruck looks more like a truck and must be used for heavier towing. The rear end of this vehicle has a large flat bed and squarish tail lights. The same bed carries a large towing rig with dual crane arms and two functioning amber lights on top, which can be activated just like the smaller version. Behind the rear wheels, mudguard flaps can be spotted. This truck as well always spawns with a rusty body texture. It cannot be modified and spawns in random dull colors. The front has a large grille with a metal guard and two small headlights on either side above which are the turn indicators. Below the driver side door there is a cylindrical fuel tank located. This truck is powered by a large twin-cam 4-cylinder engine that is fitted with a large turbocharger and a 4-speed gearbox.

Prominent appearance in mission

Smaller Version

This vehicle has no prominent appearances in the storyline missions of GTA V.

Larger Version

  • It is used by Franklin in the mission Blitz Play to ram into the armored van.

  • It is used in the Strangers and Freaks side missions done by Franklin for Tonya Wiggins.

  • It is used in the side mission, Grass Roots, played as Franklin.

  • In Scouting the Port after Trevor takes the briefcase and leaves the restricted area, a Tow Truck can be seen parked outside. This Tow Truck has a unique license plate that reads "5T3ALM3" (STEALME) and can be saved and stored at Floyd's Apartment.

Location

Smaller Version

  • Spawns outside Beeker's Garage in the Paleto Bay Rest Stop.

  • Can be spotted being driven on highways.

  • Sometimes spawns on the beach down the road from the Sandy Shores Tattoo Parlor next to Marina Drive, though a Rat-Loader may be found instead.

  • May spawn in front of the Los Santos Naval Port on Elysian Island during the Scouting the Port mission.

Larger Version

  • After purchasing the LSPD Auto Impound (as Franklin), a Towtruck appears ready for the towing side missions.

  • A Towtruck spawns inside an open barnhouse on the left hand side of Dignity Village located off of Route 1 (Great Ocean Highway) in Mount Chiliad.

  • A Towtruck spawns a couple feet away from the Zancudo River parked at Ortega's trailer home.

  • Can also be spotted on the road being driven on highways.

  • Sometimes spawns off the side of the road on the northern end of Sandy Shores.

Trivia

Smaller Version

  • If the Clown horn is installed, the horn will repeat itself until the button is released.

  • In GTA: Episodes From Liberty City, the hood of the Tow Truck will not break off, even when destroyed. This also applies to its van counterpart, the Slamvan.

  • It is possible to daisy-chain multiple Tow Trucks together and create long, millipede-like trains of connected vehicles. However, these connections become considerably more unstable the longer the chain stretches.

Larger Version

  • The default radio station for the Towtruck is Rebel Radio.

  • Strangely, both the Towtruck and its small variant share the same mass, even though this vehicle is much larger.
