Crying obsidian is a luminous variant of obsidian that is used to craft a respawn anchor. It was added to Minecraft in v1.16 and can only be obtained through ruined portals, bartering with piglins, and in bastion remnants. Even though they are a variation of obsidian, they cannot be used to make Nether portals.

Since you cannot craft or make crying obsidian, there are only a handful of sources. The most reliable are ruined portals. Crying obsidian will naturally generate as a part of ruined portals and can be picked up after breaking them using a diamond or netherite pickaxe. You can also trade with piglins for a chance to receive a few blocks of crying obsidian. When you are in the bastion, it is recommended to loot the chests that are present as they also have a chance of having crying obsidian blocks in them.

It is used to make respawn anchors, a block that allows the player to respawn in the nether. Crying obsidian can also be used as a source of light as it gives off a light level of 10.
