Dungeon

Dungeons, also referred to as monster rooms, are structures that will generate in the overworld that contain a mob spawner that spawns either zombies, skeletons, or spiders. These are most commonly found near or inside caves.

How are dungeons generated?

Dungeons generate naturally at any altitude in the Overworld provided there is a cave nearby. Eight attempts are made by the game per chunk to generate a dungeon, sometimes multiple attempts will succeed causing multiple dungeons to get generated. For every attempt, the location and size requirements must be met first. An open area with a width and length of 7,9, or 11 and a height of 6 will be chosen. After this, additional requirements are set forth which are:

  1. The floor area including the blocks under the walls of the potential dungeon must be solid.
  2. The ceiling area must also be completely solid including the blocks over the walls of the potential dungeon.
  3. The walls must have 1-5 openings at the floor level in order to connect the dungeon to a cavern or cave.

If all the requirements are met for a dungeon, air and cobblestone blocks are placed, after which 3 attempts are made to spawn each of the two generated chests. In order for the chest to generate the chosen block must be empty and must have a solid block on one of its four sides.

The mob spawner doesn't have any specific requirements and is placed at the center of the room. The cobblestone that is used for the room has a 75% chance to be mossy. The spawner will have a 50% chance of spawning zombies, a 25% chance of spawning skeletons, or a 25% chance of spawning spiders. In Bedrock Edition, the spawner can spawn zombie villagers which have a 5% chance.

Conclusion

Dungeons are a little bit challenging to take over at first, but once done you can use them for farming experience points. The loot may be underwhelming, but since there is no limit to how many mobs it can spawn, experience farming makes up for it. Always place a torch on the spawner once you have cleared out the room in order to stop more mobs from spawning.
