Generated Structures

Generated Structures in Minecraft refer to the various structures that appear naturally within the game's randomly generated world. These structures are not created by players but are pre-designed and integrated into the game's terrain generation algorithm. They can be found in different biomes and serve as both sources of valuable loot and important milestones in the gameplay progression.

It's important to note that venturing into these structures can be dangerous, as they often contain hostile mobs, traps, or other dangers. However, if players are able to overcome these challenges and eliminate the threats, certain structures like Desert Pyramids and Woodland Mansions can be repurposed as safe and functional living spaces.

It should be emphasized that while these generated structures offer exciting rewards and potential living spaces, caution and preparation are necessary to avoid potential threats and maximize the benefits they provide.

Underground Structures in the Overworld

The Overworld in Minecraft is home to a plethora of structures that vary in size and type. These structures can be found throughout the surface of the Overworld and also underground, within its default generation settings.

Underground structures, as the name suggests, can only be found below the surface of the Overworld. Here are some examples of these structures:

Ancient City

  • Biome: Deep Dark

  • Description: An intricate network of long corridors made of deepslate and wool, leads to a central building that resembles a portal-like structure made of reinforced deepslate. The city is often inhabited by a powerful mob called the warden. Scattered around the city are small ruins containing loot chests.

Mineshaft

  • Biome: Any Overworld biomes except Deep Dark

  • Description: A maze of corridors supported by wooden beams, often accompanied by minecart tracks with chests. These mine shafts may also have cave spider spawners, which are heavily surrounded by cobwebs. In Badlands biomes, dark oak planks are used instead of oak planks, and mine shafts may generate closer to the surface.

Stronghold

  • Biome: Any Overworld biomes

  • Description: Maze-like structures made of stone bricks, consisting of multiple rooms. One of the rooms usually contains an inactive end portal frame. In Java Edition, strongholds have a specific, fixed way of generating, and a maximum of 128 strongholds can be generated in a single world.

Buried Treasure

  • Biome: Beach, Snowy Beach, Stony Shore (Bedrock Edition only), Mushroom Field Shore (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused)

  • Description: Hidden chests containing valuable loot that spawn in beach or shore biomes. Players can locate these chests using treasure maps found in shipwrecks or occasionally in ocean ruins.

Trail Ruins

  • Biome: Jungle, Old Growth Birch Forest, Old Growth Pine Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, Snowy Taiga, Taiga

  • Description: Ruined buildings resembling ancient settlements. These structures are buried underground, with only the top of a tower exposed on the surface. Suspicious sand and suspicious gravel blocks can be found within the structure.

These structures add depth and exploration opportunities to the Minecraft Overworld, offering unique challenges and rewards for players willing to venture into them.

Above-Ground Structures in the Overworld

The Minecraft Overworld also features a variety of aboveground structures that generate on the surface. Here are some examples:

Desert Pyramid

  • Biome: Desert, Desert Hills (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused)

  • Description: Large sandstone structures containing four chests hidden in an underground room beneath terracotta. However, the chests are trapped with TNT, which explodes when a stone pressure plate in the center is triggered, destroying the chests and their contents.

Igloo

  • Biome: Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga, Snowy Slopes

  • Description: Snowy buildings that may have a hidden basement accessible through a carpet. The igloo itself doesn't hold much value, but the basement contains a villager and a zombie villager locked behind iron bars. A sign suggests using a splash potion of weakness and a golden apple from the loot chest to cure the zombie villager and convert it back into a regular villager.

Jungle Temple

  • Biome: Jungle, Bamboo Jungle (Java Edition only), Jungle Hills (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused)

  • Description: Overgrown cobblestone structures containing two loot chests. One chest is trapped with dispensers firing arrows triggered by a redstone mechanism, while the other is hidden behind a lever puzzle. Solving the correct combination for the levers reveals a hidden compartment with the chest.

Pillager Outpost

  • Biomes: Plains, Desert, Savanna, Taiga, Snowy Plains, Grove, Meadow, Frozen Peaks, Jagged Peaks, Stony Peaks, Snowy Slopes, Snowy Taiga (Bedrock Edition only), Sunflower Plains (Bedrock Edition only), Taiga Hills (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused), Snowy Taiga Hills (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused)

  • Description: An assortment of structures inhabited by pillagers. The main attraction is the watchtower, a tall structure made of wood and cobblestone that contains a loot chest at the top. Surrounding the watchtower are additional small structures such as tents, target scarecrows, and wooden cages that sometimes hold an iron golem or a few friendly villagers.

Swamp Hut

  • Biome: Swamp

  • Description: Also known as witch huts, these small wooden buildings on stilts contain a cauldron and a crafting table. They spawn witches and, upon generation, one black cat. The cat and the initial witch do not naturally despawn, making it possible to create a witch farm using these huts.

Village

  • Biomes: Plains, Meadow, Desert, Savanna, Taiga, Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga (Bedrock Edition only), Sunflower Plains (Bedrock Edition only), Taiga Hills (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused), Snowy Taiga Hills (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused)

  • Description: Towns composed of houses and job sites occupied by villagers with random professions. Villages are defended by up to two iron golems. The architectural materials used in village construction vary depending on the biome. Villagers in jungle and swamp biomes have different outfits compared to those in other biomes.

Abandoned Village

  • Biomes: Plains, Meadow, Desert, Savanna, Taiga, Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga (Bedrock Edition only), Sunflower Plains (Bedrock Edition only), Taiga Hills (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused), Snowy Taiga Hills (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused)

  • Description: Also known as Zombie Villages, these are variants of regular villages but in a rundown state. The houses lack torches, are in ruins, and all villagers have been transformed into zombies. Iron golems do not spawn in these villages.

Woodland Mansion

  • Biomes: Dark Forest, Dripstone Caves (Bedrock Edition only), Lush Caves (Bedrock Edition only), Dark Forest Hills (Bedrock Edition only) (Unused)

  • Description: Massive, systematically-generated buildings constructed with dark oak wood and a cobblestone foundation. Woodland Mansions have three floors with numerous rooms, including hidden ones, and several loot chests. They are inhabited by vindicators and evokers that do not naturally despawn. Allies (villagers) can sometimes be found in prison cells within the mansion.

These aboveground structures offer diverse encounters, loot, and opportunities for exploration, adding depth and excitement to the Minecraft Overworld.

Please note that the End City is the primary structure found in the End dimension, and it offers unique challenges and rewards for players who venture there after defeating the Ender Dragon.

Removed Structures

The following structures have been either removed from Minecraft or only exist in older versions of the game.

Brick Pyramid

  • Biomes: Could generate anywhere since biomes didn't exist back then.

  • Description: This giant pyramid structure was entirely made of bricks. However, it had no interior, and its official name is unknown. The brick pyramid was present in Java Edition Infdev until it was removed in version 20100327.

Glass Pillar

  • Biomes: Could generate in any Overworld biome.

  • Description: The glass pillar was a tall, one-by-one structure that extended from the end portal room in strongholds all the way up to the build limit. It was initially a debug feature that was unintentionally left in the game. The glass pillar was removed in Java Edition Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4.

The Starting House

  • Biomes: Could appear anywhere in the Java Edition Indev world.

  • Description: This structure served as the spawn location for players during the Indev phase of Minecraft. Initially made of mossy cobblestone, it was later changed to wooden planks. The starting house also included two chests with various items, but they were eventually removed.

Monolith

  • Biomes: Could generate anywhere during Infdev.

  • Description: Monoliths were large patches of terrain that could generate up to the height limit of the game. However, they were unintended glitch-like structures and were not meant to be part of the game. Monoliths were patched and removed in Alpha v1.2.0 Preview.

Nether Reactor (Bedrock Edition only)

  • Biomes: Could be built by players anywhere.

  • Description: The Nether Reactor was a player-constructed structure designed to generate the Nether Spire and provide access to unobtainable items. It was added to the game because the Nether did not exist in Pocket Edition at the time. However, it was removed after the official introduction of the Nether.

Nether Spire (Bedrock Edition only)

  • Biomes: Could appear wherever the Nether Reactor was built.

  • Description: The Nether Spire was a tall and round structure that spawned above the Nether Reactor. Initially made of obsidian, it was later changed to netherrack. The Nether Spire would generate various Zombie Pigmen and items from the Nether, allowing players in Pocket Edition to obtain certain items before the Nether was implemented.

Obsidian Wall

  • Biomes: Could be found anywhere since it stretches in every direction.

  • Description: The obsidian wall was a two-block tall structure that appeared in some versions of the Infdev phase. It started in the middle of the world and extended towards the North, South, West, and East directions. This structure does not have an official name.
