If there is a Village near your base, it may already have a Smithing Table as it naturally spawns in Villages. If it does not, crafting one is relatively simple.
First things first, you will need four Planks of any variety; they do not have to be the same kind of Plank. If you do not have those on hand, go break a tree block, open your inventory, put it in the 2x2 Crafting grid and you will get all the Planks you need.
The Iron Ingots will take a little bit more effort to acquire. If you do not already have some on hand, check out this article for an in-depth description of how to smelt some.
Take one from a Village, or craft your own with Planks and Iron Ingots.
Smithing Tables in Minecraft have two important uses: creating a Toolsmith to trade with or upgrading your Diamond Armor into Netherite Armor. First, let’s talk about the Toolsmiths.
If a Village does not already have a Toolsmith, you can turn an unemployed Villager into one by placing a Smithing Table near their bed. Once you have access to a Toolsmith, check out this article for more information on the best trades you can make with them.
For your own purposes, a Smithing Table can be used to upgrade Diamond Armor and tools into Netherite. Netherite is more durable than Diamond, and it does not burn in fire or lava. That means if you drop them or die from burning, you will be able to return and collect your Netherite materials!
In order to smith Netherite items, you will need a Netherite Ingot when interacting with a Smithing Table. If you do not know how to get Netherite, check out this article. Once you have enough Netherite, you will plug it into the appropriate slot alongside a Diamond item in the Smithing Table, as shown in the example below.
Are there any hidden uses for a Smithing Table?
Technically! Smithing Tables can be used as a fuel source in a Furnace. However, it is an ineffective fuel source, so try using Coal instead.
What is the best item a Toolsmith will trade?
Once they have progressed to higher ranks, Toolsmith Villagers will trade you different Enchanted Diamond items. A worthwhile investment indeed!
With both direct smithing uses and indirect trading uses, the Smithing Table is one of the more versatile job source blocks in Minecraft. Plus, it gives you access to Netherite items, which eliminate the fear of fire and lava forever.
