Stonecutters are a relatively easy item to obtain in Minecraft, especially for such a useful device. There are two ways of getting a Stonecutter: the first is to steal one from a Village or you can go the harder route and craft one of your own.

Given that Stonecutters are only really necessary for aesthetic projects—not as progression toward The End or setting up your first base—you will probably have the materials needed to create one on hand by the time you want to make a Stonecutter. If not, stealing one from a Village is super easy.

All you need to collect a Stonecutter from a Village is any kind of Pickaxe. Here’s a brief how-to article on Pickaxes, if you require more information on them.

If you are opposed to thievery, crafting a Stonecutter of your own is no great problem. All you need is an Iron Ingot and three stones.

Depending on if you are playing the Bedrock or Java versions of Minecraft, the kind of stone you need will vary. In Java, the three stones must be Stone blocks while in Bedrock any three of these blocks in any combination will suffice:

3. Diorite

5. Polished Granite
6. Granite
7. Stone

For simplicity’s sake, we will focus on Stone and there are two simple ways to get Stone blocks. You could enchant a Pickaxe with Silk Touch and mine some Stone. Otherwise, you could mine Stone to harvest Cobblestone, and then smelt the Cobblestone in a Furnace.

In a Nutshell:

Steal one from a Village! If you are pure of heart, smelt some Cobblestone and Iron Ingots to craft one of your own.

Most of these materials could be crafted with a Crafting Table but not as efficiently. The Stonecutter will give you at least one of each output, if not more, for each input.

Do Villagers get angry if you take their Stonecutter?

Fortunately no, Villagers will not get angry at the player unless they harm another Villager.

Do Stonecutters have any special features?

Yes, if a Stonecutter is used with a Note Block, it sounds like a bass drum. Be sure to place the Note Block on top of the Stonecutter to get the sound effect!

While by no means a necessary tool to make your ideal rocky home, the Stonecutter will make any project using specialized stone much easier. And for those unafraid to pillage a village, it is an incredibly easy tool to get.
