A Sword is one of the very first tools that a Minecraft Player should craft. By the end of your first night, you should have a sword to defend you from enemy mobs. Since you do not start with a bed and wool it is not guaranteed to be found early on, a sword is the only way you can be sure to protect yourself from Creepers, Skeletons, Zombies and other dangerous foes.
While a player can technically defend themselves with their hands or any other tool, Swords are significantly easier to use and do a lot more damage. These tools can also be upgraded and enchanted in ways to increase its killing power dramatically.

Place one Stick in the center column of the crafting grid. Again in the center column, place two matching materials to complete the forging of your Sword.
Using a sword is simple as all you have to do is place your Sword in your hotbar and equip it. By activating the Use key, your character will swing the sword in an arc in front of them. This has noticeably more range and area of effect than using a bare first.
The swipe of a sword is significantly stronger than using your bare fist.

There are 6 different qualities of swords, but there are 10 different enchantments you can apply to each quality. There are dozens of combinations to choose from for your desired weapon.

Keep in mind that each enchantment has lower levels beginning at 1. Here are the max level enchantments that you can apply: Fire Aspect 2, Looting 3, Unbreaking 3, Sharpness 5, Smite 5, Bane of Arthropods 5, Knockback 2, Mending 1, Curse of Vanishing 1 and Sweeping Edge 3.
Q. Which enchantments are best for swords?
This is mostly subjective! You can only apply 2 enchantments so it is important to be very selective. You can also create multiple swords and try different combinations for different situations. For example, Bane of Arthropods only affects spiders, bees, silverfish, and endermites, while Sharpness and Unbreaking are useful against any enemy.
With so many enchantments and qualities to choose from, you might find it difficult to decide on a singular combination. This is the beauty of Minecraft weapons - you must be selective with your time and choose items that you know will serve you well for the rest of your game.
