Trapdoors are useful blocks in Minecraft. If you want a door that you can open and close for a ladder you can use a trapdoor in place of a regular door. They come in many different variants for each of the different types of wood you can collect in Minecraft. They are relatively cheap, but despite requiring the same amount of wood like doors, you end up getting fewer trapdoors for each recipe. This guide will outline the required materials to make trapdoors, how to make them, and how to use them.
To make a trapdoor you just need to make a sideways door. Arrange 6 wood in a 2x3 arrangement in your crafting table and this recipe will yield 2 trapdoors. While you can use any wood for the trapdoor, you will need to use the same type of wood for the corresponding trapdoor you are trying to make. Dark oak makes dark oak trapdoors, jungle wood makes jungle trapdoors, and so on.

To make a Trapdoor in Minecraft, open the crafting table containing the 3x3 grid. Place 3 wood planks in the first row of the grid, and the other 3 planks in the second row. Now that a Trapdoor has been made, simply drag it to your inventory.

Trapdoors are commonly used as a way to prevent players from accidentally falling down through a hole built for ladders. If you have a ladder somewhere in your house and you want to prevent players from falling you can use a trapdoor as a way to catch people from falling.
If you want to change the position of the trapdoor, pay close attention to where your cursor is aligned when you place the trapdoor. You can still hop out of the hole from your ladder even if there is a block of ladders missing. Doing this can make the trapdoor flush with the floor.
Even though it seems like you cannot stand on top of the ladder, your player character is large enough that it will be able to fit on top of where the ladder ends. Making your trapdoor flush with the floor is also a good way to hide it. You can place carpet on top of a trapdoor by holding sneak and right-clicking on top of the trapdoor.
While this hides it efficiently, you cannot open the trapdoor without breaking the carpet. Alternatively, you could leave it open and then place the carpet over it, but someone could accidentally stumble across the secret passage you have.
Trapdoors are useful for creating a point of entry for upwards and downwards passages. The recipe for trapdoors is simple and you get 2 trapdoors for every 6 wooden planks you use. There are 9 total different trapdoors that you can craft so experiment around with the ones you like best. Trapdoors can also be used as accents or retractable windows. Use them however you see fit.

While trapdoors are somewhat limited in their practicality, they are pretty blocks that have 9 different appearances to toy around with. You can use them for more than just doorways up and down, consider using them as window sills. Since they are easy and relatively cheap to make, experiment around with them as much as you want.
A. Once your trapdoor is flush with the floor, you can place any color of the carpet above it to hide it from any prying eyes. While you cannot interact with the trapdoor by right-clicking, you could wire Redstone to it to open and close it when you want it to. Otherwise, you will need to break the carpet and replace it each time you need to go up or down.
A. While barrels are actual blocks in Minecraft, you can use trapdoors to make a barrel that looks much like a barrel full of water. Use spruce trapdoors for the best appearance. Place a trapdoor on the floor, arrange four trapdoors around it, and hold shift to place water where the base trapdoor is. Don’t worry if you accidentally open one of its sides, the water will not pour out.
