Packed ice is an opaque and harder variant of ice that doesn't melt near bright light sources. It can be used to make item transporters, ice highways, etc. It has the same ‘slipperiness’ as regular ice blocks.

Packed ice is naturally generated in the rare ice spikes biomes, inside icebergs, frozen peaks biome and in ice patches. It can also be found in loot chests in snowy plains villages and ancient cities. You can make packed ice yourself by filling up the 3x3 crafting grid with 9 blocks of regular ice.

Packed ice is just as slippery as regular ice, this causes most entities and items to slide around when on them. This feature allows players to make long ice highways to cover large distances quickly as the speed of a wooden boat goes up to 40m/s on packed ice.
Players also construct item transporters. The increase in speed of items and entities is not as much as regular ice but it's an acceptable tradeoff since packed ice doesn't melt around lights. You can craft blue ice from packed ice.
