Black Zetsu is a fictional character in the beloved manga and its anime adaptation, the Naruto series, written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. He was the will incarnation of the Mother of all Chakra, Kaguya Otsutsuki.

One of the series' main adversaries, Black Zetsu, was Kaguya Otsutsuki's will come to life. Since the beginning of the shinobi world, he has been in charge of planning every big event.
He started conflicts and sowed discord between Indra, Ashura Otsutsuki, and each of their reincarnations. He utilized Madara Uchiha, who was the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki at the moment, as a tool to resurrect his mother Kaguya Otsutsuki, and betrayed him.
Black Zetsu was the only person in the Naruto world with the remarkable talent known as Body Coating Technique. He could use the plasticity of his own body to cover the target with this technique. He was able to use all of the methods and Kekkei Genkai that the target had by using Body Coating. He employed Rinne Rebirth Jutsu to revive Madara by performing this technique on Obito Uchiha.
He was the villainous counterpart of his brother, Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths. He was Hagoromo Otsutsuki's evil twin and the Sage of the Six Paths, Hagoromo Otsutsuki. He appeared to be black, although Hagoromo had a white complexion. In contrast to Hagoromo, who rebelled against their mother, he was the dutiful child. Black Zetsu revived their mother after Hagoromo had sealed her away. They flawlessly reflected each other's behavior and intentions.
In the Fourth Great Nina War, as the battle of Team 7 against Kaguya Otsutsuki concluded, Black Zetsu was sealed away along with Kaguya by Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha. They performed the Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei to seal Kaguya Otsutsuki and Black Zetsu along with her.

Although Black Zetsu was introduced in the series as one of the side characters in the series, he turned out to be one of the major antagonists in the series. Madara Uchiha introduced Black Zetsu as the physical manifestation of his will, but it was later revealed in the show that he was the will incarnate of Kaguya Otsutsuki in reality.
Kaguya was sealed by her children. Hagoromo and Hamura Otsutsuki, at the end of their battle. Before being completely sealed, she managed to give birth to Black Zetsu, an incarnation of her will. Black Zetsu was born for the sole purpose of reviving Kaguya. Black Zetsu considered himself to be the third son of Kaguya.
Black Zetsu spent his life bringing chaos to the world, carving the path for the revival of his mother. He was responsible for orchestrating every significant event, conflict, and war in the shinobi world.
Black Zetsu approached Indra Otsutsuki, the firstborn son of Hagoromo Otsutsuki. He manipulated him and sowed the seeds of conflicts in their happy family. Black Zetsu manipulated Indra and turned him against his father and younger brother, Ashura Otsutsuki.
Even after Indra and Ashura had died, he manipulated their reincarnations and made them fight against each other. Even though Black Zetsu did not approach Madara before his battle against Hashirama Senju, it is believed he was pulling the strings from behind the curtain.
After the battle between Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju, Madara faced defeat and died. Madara used the Uchiha Forbidden Jutsu, Izanagi, to alter reality itself and came back to life. In that battle, Madara managed to retrieve some flesh of Hashirama and implanted that in himself. By the combination of Uchiha and Senju chakra, Madara was able to awaken the legendary Dojutsu, the Rinnegan.
Madara summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, also known as the Gedo Statue, with his newly acquired visual prowess and implanted Hashirama’s cells in it. At that point in time, Black Zetsu approached Madara and introduced himself as the physical manifestation of Madara’s will.
He also retrieved White Zetsu from the Gedo Statue and made Madara believe that White Zetsu was an artificial human created by the Gedo Statue with its chakra and Hashirama’s cells.
Later in the series, Madara implanted Black Zetsu on the right half of White Zetsu’s body, and together, they became known as Zetsu. Madara tasked them to aid Obito Uchiha in his goals. Obito later assumed Madara’s identity and approached Nagato Uzumaki alongside Zestu in the Hidden Rain Village.
Later Zestu became a member of the criminal organization, the Akatsuki, and was a major part of the Fourth Great Ninja Way. Obito used an army of White Zetsu to fight against the Allied Shinobi Forces. In the Fourth Great Ninja War, White Zetsu divided his physical body and created two separate entities, giving Black Zetsu a body of his own.
In the war, the battle between Ten-Tails Jinchuriki Obito and Naruto concluded when Naruto extracted the tailed beasts from Obito. Obito, who had almost changed his ways of thinking, tried to revive all the shinobi who became casualties of the war, just like Nagato did but Madara used Black Zetsu to shape his own plans. Black Zetsu controlled Obito by using his Body Coating Technique.
He revived Madara by forcing Obito to perform the Rinne-Rebirth Jutsu, also known as the Gedo Art of Rinne Rebirth. Later, Obito was able to deny Black Zetsu’s influence. He was able to fool Madara Uchiha into believing that he was still under the influence of Black Zetsu, and successfully landed a surprise attack on him.
Madara was able to retrieve the tailed beasts and became the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki. Later, he cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi on the world. Black Zetsu pointed out that the light of the Infinite Tsukuyomi was incapable of piercing Sasuke’s Perfect Susanoo and Team 7 managed to avoid getting hit by it. While Madara prepared to launch an attack against Naruto and Sasuke, he was stabbed from behind by Black Zetsu.
Madara was perplexed and alarmed when Black Zetsu chastised him for thinking he was any different from Obito and that he himself couldn't be exploited. Madara said that Black Zetsu was meant to be his will before going on to say that he was actually "Kaguya's will," in a distressed and enraged tone.
After making this proclamation, Black Zetsu spread all over Madara's body while the latter screamed in agony. At the same time, Madara was made to absorb the chakra of those caught in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, transforming him into a massive blob. Madara's body shrank and altered when Black Zetsu entirely engulfed it, bringing forth the reborn Kaguya in his place.
Black Zetsu informed Kaguya of the situation and then proceeded to attack Naruto and Sasuke to retrieve their chakra. At moments, it seemed like Kaguya did not want to harm them and even saw her sons in them, but was attacking them at Black Zetsu’s accord.
Near the end of the battle between Kaguya Otsutsuki and Team 7, Sasuke and Naruto managed to land their final hit and attacked her with Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei, also known as Six Paths: Planetary Devastation. As Kaguya was being sealed away, all the tailed beasts were able to be set free from their captivity and managed to escape from Kaguya’s grasp.
As Kaguya was being sealed away, Black Zetsu started planning for another opportunity to revive Kaguya once again. Naruto arrived and stated that he did not forget about him. Black Zetsu was furious and stated that Naruto was nothing more than a small fraction of shinobi history that he created and the likes of him are incapable of harming him.
Naruto replied by stating that shinobi history was created by the lives of deaths of numerous shinobi. Naruto also mentioned that Black Zetsu was just a brat who wanted his mother’s attention and was afraid to leave her side. Naruto then threw Black Zetsu towards Kaguya and sealed him away along with her.
As the battle of Team 7 against Kaguya Otsutsuki concluded, Black Zetsu was sealed away along with Kaguya by Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha. Whether he is dead or is still alive after being sealed is still a mystery. For the time being, he is considered to be decapacitated. Although Black Zetsu was sealed, it could be said that he got his life-long dream fulfilled, his desire to stay by his mother’s side.

He considered Kaguya to be her mother and considered himself to be her third child. He dedicated his life to one goal and one goal only, reviving his mother, Kaguya. He betrayed anyone he came across to fulfill his goal. It seemed like he wanted to get by Kaguya’s side and gain her recognition. Naruto stated that Black Zetsu was like a trouble-making brat who wanted his mother's attention.

Black Zetsu sowed the seeds for numerous conflicts, created war, and caused conflict between Ashura and Indra Outsutsuki and their reincarnations for generations. He stated that he was the sole reason for every major event in shinobi history.
He stated that he brought conflict and chaos to the shinobi world for the sole purpose of carving a path for the revival of his mother, Kaguya Otsutsuki. Although whatever he did could be considered out of love for her mother and wanting to revive her, it could also be out of plain and simple obedience, as he was the will incarnate of Kaguya.
After the battle against Kaguya concluded, Naruto stated that Black Zetsu was nothing more than a spoiled brat who was afraid of leaving her mother’s side and it was time he flew out of the nest.
Black Zetsu did not possess a solid physical body as his body possessed the characteristics of plastic and even fluid at times. When he was born, his body seemed mimic liquid nature. He was able to use the Body Coating Technique because of this unique ability but he did have great mobility and could easily mold his body. Black Zetsu was completely black in appearance with two yellow eyes and he would often shape his mouth and reveal his jagged and sharp teeth.
When he was attached to the right side of White Zetsu’s body, they became known as Zetsu. The two extensions, resembling a Venus flytrap, that swelled up from the sides of the two Zetsu when they were together and formed a shell around their heads and upper bodies that they could open and close made them instantly identifiable. They had both of their legs bandaged and were dressed in blue pants and sandals underneath their Akatsuki cloak.
Black Zetsu possessed many unique abilities, one of which was his Body Coating Technique. Black Zetsu had this special talent that enabled him to coat his target's body and control them using his plastic body. This method was mainly used to prevent the target from moving by covering its body and compelling it to do what he wanted by exerting his will straight through them.
While attached to the target's body, Black Zetsu was able to use all of the target's techniques, Kekkei Genkai, and other skills. Through this method, Black Zetsu could control the victim and stabilize their life force. Black Zetsu could prolong Obito’s life after using Rinne-Rebirth Jutsu, also known as Gedo Art of Rinne Rebirth, which can bring dead souls back in exchange for the user’s own life.
He also possessed an unusual ability that allowed him to record events and he could then show those recordings to whomever he wanted by attaching himself to their body. Black Zetsu was capable of absorbing chakra from his targets by using his Body Coating Technique and could share the absorbed chakra with others using the same method.
Black Zetsu showcased affinity to all chakra nature, which is something very few individuals in the series possessed. When he was attached to a host body, he could use all their techniques without any restriction, despite its chakra nature. He even performed Wood Release, a specialty of Hashirama Senju, when he was attached to White Zetsu who had Hashirama’s cells in the composition of his physical body. He effortlessly utilized the visual prowess of the Sharingan and the Rinnegan without any side effects while being attached to Obito.
Black Zetsu possessed a keen intellect as he was able to manipulate notable individuals and orchestrated major events in shinobi history from the shadows. He possessed a simple but significant ability. He was able to hide his presence and was undetectable to even the most skilled sensory shinobi.
Being the physical manifestation of Kaguya’s will, he possessed extraordinary surviving capabilities. He lived for the course of centuries, supposedly more than a thousand years.

Other than the manga and anime adaptation of the Naruto series, Black Zetsu is also a vital part of games, movies, novels, and OVAs related to the series. Black Zetsu makes his debut in the OVA category with the release of Naruto Shippuden: UNSG anime cutscenes.
Black Zetsu is also a part of movies of the series, making his debut with Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie. In the movie, Zetsu was responsible for sending several clones disguised as deceased Akatsuki members to attack Hidden Leaf Village at the beginning of the movie. Later, he was seen with Tobi after Naruto and Sakura returned to their world, noting that they were so close to capturing the Nine-Tails.
With the publication of Naruto Jinraiden: The Day the Wolf Howled, Black Zetsu made his literary debut in the novel category.
Black Zetsu made his debut in games with Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja 4 and is also a playable character in the following games related to the series:
