Indra Otsutsuki is a fictional character in the beloved manga and its anime adaptation, the Naruto series, written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. He was the firstborn son of the Sage of Six Paths, Hagoromo Otsutsuki, and a descendent of the Mother of all Chakra, Kaguya Otsutsuki.
Indra inherited his father’s Dojutsu (visual prowess), chakra, and mental energy, and later became the founder of the clan known as the Uchiha Clan. His younger brother, Ashura Otsutsuki, inherited his father’s physical power and life force. Although he was a kind-hearted child, he grew up to be a bitter man after getting manipulated by Black Zetsu over the years. He went as far as to kill his friends to gain power and attacked his father and younger to acquire Hagaoromo’s position.
Indra is also regarded as the inventor of ninjutsu, and as his father's protege, it was thought that he would succeed him. But after his younger brother, Ashura Otsutuski was chosen to carry on their father's inheritance, Indra grew distant from them. The Senju Clan and the Uchiha Clan, two of the series' most formidable clans, were eventually founded as a result of the fight between the two brothers.
Even after facing defeat at his younger brother’s hands, Indra still refused to acknowledge him and the battle between them continued throughout their lifespan. Even after both brothers ended their natural lifespan, they reincarnated throughout history and fought each other.

Indra Otsutsuki was the firstborn son of Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths. The brothers' mother passed away as a result of problems with the delivery of his younger brother, Ashura Otsutsuki. Indra had a very happy upbringing despite losing his mother. From an early age, he spent much of his time with his sibling or reading his father's books and diaries as part of his daily hobbies.
The sage's mental fortitude, chakra, and Dojutsu skills were all inherited by Indra, who thus naturally excelled in all he attempted. Furthermore, with the intention of carrying on their father's heritage after him, the two brothers studied Ninshu under their father's tutelage.
As Indra continued to study under his father's guidance, he came to understand that by using specific hand signs and chakra to adjust output, one could accomplish a variety of feats in accordance with one's chakra nature. This led to the birth of Ninjutsu. Indra's methods were soon modified by Ninshu devotees of the Sage of Six Paths, who utilized them for both their own and other people's advantages.
Indra was happy with his accomplishments and the growth of the others, but he also expressed worry that the fundamental goals of Ninshu—spiritual development and interpersonal connection—were no longer being prioritized by many Ninshu practitioners in favor of physical development.
Indra's pet dog died in the anime while trying to defend Ashura from a wild animal attack, which caused Indra to reawaken his Sharingan. Black Zetsu was behind the wild animal attack and planned to eliminate Ashura and cause the awakening of Indra’s Sharingan.
Although Ashura was safe and sound, Black Zetsu succeeded in his primary motive. Black Zetsu used to sneak up on Indra anytime he was by himself and taunt him with compliments. Due to his own powers and Black Zetsu's influence, Indra started concentrating entirely on himself and his training since he started to think that one should only rely on their own strength.
As he worked alone, he grew distant from his younger brother and other people. Indra used to be a kind soul who loved his younger brother and cared about others, but under Black Zetsu’s influence, he grew distant and became a bitter and cold-hearted man as he grew up.
When the time came for Hagaromo to select his successor, he tasked his sons with restoring and supporting a foreign country that was struggling to live. Both of them were dispatched to a place where the people were fighting for survival owing to disease and a lack of water.
Indra observed that although the ground was fertile in and of itself, the God Tree sapling was destroying it, causing the disease and water shortage. Indra made the decision to use his visual skills alone to persuade people to chop down the sapling and then left for home.
He learned that Ashura had not yet returned when he got there. Indra was not pleased with his father's choice to wait until Ashura arrived and make the choice then.
After a prolonged wait, Ashura inevitably made his way back, but this time he was joined by the individuals he had been sent to assist. The people Ashura was sent to help, were now his followers. Ashura was chosen by Hagaromo as his successor, explaining that Indra was incapable of listening to others and only cared for his own interests.
Instead of working together with the people, he would rather rely on his own strength to solve a crisis. The village Indra was trying to preserve ended up destroying itself as a result of battling for water, which caused confusion and caused the village to perish. Indra was furious and envious of his father's choice.
Indra intended to challenge his father since he was angry with his family as a result of his father's choice, but soon realized he lacked the strength to do so. Indra killed his two closest friends and obtained the Mangekyo Sharingan in order to increase his might.
Indra set out to kill his brother with his newly acquired strength, but to Indra's amazement, his father's strength allowed him to successfully counter his plan. Indra released his Perfect Susanoo and tried to crush Ashura, the younger brother he once cherished.
Hagoromo surrounded Ashura's supporters and pleaded with them to give Ashura their strength out of concern that Ashura could lose.
Ashura was able to reveal his actual might with the aid of the followers, and he used a combination of Wood Release and Six Paths Senjutsu to defeat Indra. Despite suffering defeat at the hands of his younger brother, Indra continued to reject him, and the conflict between them persisted throughout their entire lives.
Even when both brothers' natural lives came to an end, they continued to battle each other over centuries through their reincarnations.
As they fought own over the centuries, Indra’s descendants became known as the legendary UchihaClan, the possessor of Sharingan, one of the Three Legendary Dojutsu. Ashura’s descendenst became renowned as the formidable Senju Clan.
The fight between these two brothers finally ended when Sasuke Uchiha, the reincarnation of Indra, acknowledged Naruto Uzumaki, the reincarnation of the younger brother, Ashura.
As a young kid, Indra was a kindred soul. He put his father, Hagoromo Otsutsuki, upon a pedestal and admired him. He adored his younger brother, Ashura Otsutsuki, and would often spend his time with Ashura playing. Unlike his younger brother, Indra excelled in academics and was often spotted studying books in his father’s library,
Indra was a gifted child. He inherited his father’s mental strength as well as his Dojutsu and potent chakra. Indra was a practitioner of Ninshu under his father’s tutelage. At some point, he realized that with appropriate manipulation of chakra combined with certain hand signs, one could achieve various feats.
This practice of chakra was later known as Ninjutsu. Following this groundbreaking discovery, the use of Ninjutsu spread and people started using Ninjutsu in their daily lives for tasks.
Although he was glad that the use of ninjutsu had resulted in certain ease in lifestyle for people, he was worried about the fact that the use of ninjutsu would eventually become a source of strength. This goal differed from the original purpose of Ninshu, which was to connect people with one another.
After Indra lost his pet dog and awakened his Sharingan, Black Zetsu started visiting him in secret. Over time under Black Zetsu’s influence, Indra grew distant from others and started relying on his raw strength rather than working together with others. He started keeping his distance from his younger sibling.
Hagoromo sent him and Ashura on a mission to rescue the people of different foreign countries from their inevitable demise. Unlike Ashura, Indra used his own strength to resolve the crisis instead working with each other. As a result, as soon as he left, the people of that land started fighting over natural resources and eventually perished.
When Hagoromo chose Ashura as his successor, Indra could not accept his decision and decided to overthrow his father’s reign. To gain more power, he killed two of his friends and attempted to crush his brother and lost. Even after countless battles, he declared that he would never acknowledge Ashura and would battle him by reincarnating after the end of his natural lifespan.
Indra wore his long, dark hair short on top and his face was framed on either side by two locks that were bandaged. He had dark eyes and small, arched eyebrows that were an indication of his nobility. He later developed blue lines around his eyes, which were turned up at the corners, and started wearing his hair back in a long cylindrical form.
He was dressed in a light-colored, high-collar kimono that was fastened with a dark sash. Magatama was used to decorate the kimono's collar. Underneath, he was dressed in a black full-body suit.
He had his hair let out to flow around the full-body armor he sported and carried a sword strapped to his back when fighting Ashura. He developed slight lines around the corners of his lips as he got older, and his hair flattened out and began to cover his left eye.
Indra possessed a substantial amount of his father's potent chakra, mental fortitude, and visual aptitude. Indra was depicted in the anime as having exceptional Taijutsu skills, to the point where no other Ninshu disciple even remotely represented a threat to him. Indra was able to execute Yin Release in the manga. Indra possessed the Fire and Lightning Release in the anime. Indra had proven to be skilled in Kenjutsu and Shuriken Jutsu as well.
When Indra rescued his brother from a wild animal but also lost his dog in the process, he awakened his Sharingan, which he inherited from his father. Sharingan enabled him to anticipate his opponent's movements by tracking the chakra's movement.
Indra had awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan and was now able to use Perfect Susanoo, which is considered the pinnacle ability of the Mangekyo Sharingan, after killing two of his followers who were also believed to be his friends.
