Madara Uchiha is a fictional character in the beloved manga and its anime adaptation, the Naruto series, written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. Madara was a well-renowned shinobi of the Warring State Period and was one of the founding members of the Village Hidden in the Leaves and introduced the Hidden Village system to the world. He was the eldest son of Tajima Uchiha and elder brother of Izuna Uchiha.

Madara played the role of a major antagonist in the series. He was the eldest son of the Tajima Uchiha, leader of the Uchiha clan at the time. Madara was born in the Warring States Period. Uchiha Clan was often hired because of their formidable prowess. Being the two strongest shinobi clans of the time, the Uchiha clan was constantly in battle against the well-renowned Senju Clan.
Madara had four younger siblings but lost all of them at the hands of members of the Senju clan. When Madara was a young child, he became friends with Hashirama Senju, both of them were not aware of their clans. They shared their dream of establishing peace in their war-inflicted era. Once their father became aware of their friendship, they had to go on their separate ways. Eventually, Madara became the leader of the Uchiha clan.
After numerous conflicts with each other, Madara and Hashirama joined forces and established the Hidden Leaf Village and introduced the concept of Hidden Village to the world. Madara eventually cut his ties with the Uchiha clan and the Hidden Leaf and went on a journey to establish a peaceful world of dreams by Infinite Tsukuyomi. He manipulated many individuals and sacrificed a lot of things to create his dream world.
In the Fourth Great Ninja War, he became the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki and successfully activated Infinite Tsukuyomi. Everything was going according to his plan, but he was betrayed by Black Zetsu and was used as the vessel for the revival of Kaguya Otsutsuki. As the battle between Team 7 and Kaguya concluded, all the tailed beasts were extracted, and Madara died as the Jinchuriki of a tailed beast died after their tailed beast is extracted.

Madara Uchiha was a proud member of the formidable Uchiha Clan and he was the eldest son of Tajima Uchiha, leader of the Uchiha clan at the time. He was the eldest of five siblings but lost three of them at a very young age. Madara trained with his only remaining younger brother Izuna Uchiha, who he adored as he was born in a war-stricken era, known as the Warring State Period.
In that era, shinobi clans were hired by noble families or different individuals to fight their battles or to defend them. Being the two strongest clans of the time, Senju and Uchiha clans were often at each other's throats and both lost beloved members of their clans. This gave rise to hatred and bad blood between the two clans.
Madara was a prodigy as he was born with strong chakra, even by Uchiha standards. At a very young age, he was capable of going toe to toe with adults twice his age. At some point, Madara met Hashirama Senju at the bank of a certain river. Both children knew that the other one was a shinobi but were not aware of their respective clans.
They formed a bond of friendship and would often meet at the same spot and share their dreams for the future. They both shared a dream to establish peace in their war-inflicted world and wanted to get rid of their blood-covered existence. They dreamt of establishing a village where young children would not have to fight in wars as they did.
At some point, Madara’s father became aware of his son’s friendship with a Senju and planned to eliminate him to land a hit on Senju with Izuna. Madara was not aware of this development and was followed by his father and brother when he went to meet Hashirama.
To Tajima’s surprise, Hashirama’s father was also aware of the situation and was also planning to eliminate Madara and brought Tobirama Senju along with him. When confronted, they were three against three. To avoid this conflict for the sake of their friendship, Madara advised his father that they should retreat as Hashirama was stronger than him.
Hearing this, Izuna was shocked as Madara was one of the strongest shinobi he knew. His friendship with Hashirama meant a lot to him, and when he lost it, Madara awakened his Sharingan.
At some point, Madara awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan. Itachi Uchiha stated that Madara and Izuna murdered someone close to them to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan but if that is true or not is not confirmed. Madara fought numerous battles against Hashirama and the Senju clan and eventually, they both became leaders of their respective clans.
In one of their battles, Izuna suffered fatal injuries at the hands of Tobirama when he was caught off guard by his Flying Raijin Jutsu. Hashirama shared his proposal of collaborating. Hashirama proposed that the Uchiha and Senju join forces and no one would be able to oppose them. He stated that they could finally make the dream they shared a very long time ago in a reality. Madara was interested in the proposal but declined after Izuna stated that they could never trust the word of a Senju.
Noticing Izuna’s life was in danger, Hashirama allowed Madara to retreat and take care of his brother. After some time, Izuna succumbed to his injuries. Before his demise, Izuna gave his Sharingan so that Madara could awaken the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and protect their clan.
Later, Madara fought against Hashirama with his newly acquires visual prowess but faced utter defeat. Hashirama once again reached out to him with a hand of friendship and offered to join forces with him. Madara declined by stating that he lost his Izuna at the hands of his younger brother and the only way he could accept his offer was if he could kill Tobirama and avenge his younger brother.
Hashirama acknowledged his request and stated that he knew how much he adored Izuna but he could not sacrifice Tobirama. Hashirama then decided to sacrifice his own life and instructed the Senju clan to not lay a single finger on Madara, in exchange the Uchiha clan would join forces with the Senju clan and Madara would invasion their dream.
As Hashirama was going to kill himself, Madara stopped him and this became the stepping stone for the unison of the two clans.
The Uchiha and the Senju Clan joined forces and established a peaceful village which became known as the Village Hidden in the Leaves and Hashirama was appointed as the First Hokage. Many clans from all over the land immigrated to the Hidden Leaf Village. They had finally made their dream into reality, but happiness still eluded Madara.
He was dissatisfied with the discrimination the Uchiha were facing. Hashirama wanted Madara to be the Hokage but Tobirama mentioned the distrust of himself and a few other clans on Madara. He stated that everyone wanted Hashirama to lead them. Madara listened to their conversation and feared that the Uchiha clan members might be oppressed in the future.
With his formidable visual prowess, Madara was able to decipher most of the content of the Uchiha Stone Tablet which was passed down in the clan for generations. Madara learned about the Sage of Six Paths, the history of shinobi, and the numerous attempts at peace. He also discovered a means to unify every person on the face of the earth, the Infinite Tsukuyomi. He believed that people are unable of setting their differences aside and the only way to unite them is to cast a genjutsu on them where they could live in their dream world.
With his profound enlightenment, Madara was convinced that Hidden Leaf was a failed experiment. Madara chose to follow this path and tried to convince his clan, but none of them followed him. Madara also informed Hashirama of his newly gained knowledge, but Hashirama was unable to agree with his hypothesis.
With this, Madara abandoned the village stating that while he walked towards his real dream, he was looking forward to fighting Hashirama. Madara then attacked the Hidden Leaf and fought Hashirama on multiple occasions. In his last assault, Madara brought Nine-Tailed Demon Fox who was under his control to fight against Hashirama.
They fought tirelessly and their battle left the battlefield in shambles, which became known as the Valley of the End. Madara was defeated and Hashirama stated that he won’t forgive anyone, be they may be his family or his children if they harmed the Hidden Leaf and landed the finishing blow, killing Madara.
The news of Madara’s demise spread like a wildfire. Tobirama made sure to hide his corpse in secrecy so that no one was capable of finding it and exploit the corpse of the dead shinobi for information. Without anyone’s knowledge, Madara had scheduled an Izanagi in his right eye to rewrite reality and revive himself after his death.
Somehow, Black Zetsu was aware of this possibility and hid in Madara’s body. When Madara came back to life, he replaced his corpse with a clone. During his battle against Hashirama, he managed to retrieve the flesh of Hashirama in his mouth which he implanted in his wounds. It didn’t take effect until he was close to the end of his natural lifespan. As a result of a combination of Uchiha and Senju flesh and chakra, Madara awakened the Rinnegan which also restored his right eye, which was blinded as a result of Izanagi.
Black Zetsu revealed himself and manipulated Madara. He made Madara believe that he was the physical materialization of his will. Madara summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, also known as the Gedo Statue. Madara implanted Hashirama’s cells in the Gedo Statue. Black Zetsu extracted White Zetsu from the statue and made Madara believe that he was an artificial human created by the chakra of the statue and Hashirama’s cells. Madara then siphoned chakra from the Gedo Statue to prolong his lifespan.
Madara dedicated his life to his dream and prepared for it. He transplanted his Rinnegan into a child, Nagato Uzumaki. He planned for Nagato to use the Rinne-Rebirth Jutsu to bring Madara back to life in the future, but he needed a pawn to guide Nagato to his destiny. For this, he kept tabs on the Hidden Leaf to find a suitable pawn for his plans.
In the Third Great Ninja War, he came across a young Uchiha, Obito Uchiha, who was badly injured. He saved the young boy’s life, replaced his lost limbs with Hashirama’s cells, and placed a Forbidden Individual Cursed Tag in his heart if Obito decided to betray him. He then started brainwashing Obito for his plans.
Madara manipulated the Hidden Mist Village to kidnap Rin Nohara, Obito’s love interest, and seal the Three-Tailed Beast within her. He orchestrated it in such a way that Rin was forced to be killed at the hand of KakashiHatake, Obito’s best friend, in front of his eyes. Obito was overwhelmed with grief and despair by the sight and decided to help Madara envision his dream.
Madara entrusted Black Zetsu, who he believed was his will manifestation, to aid Obito in his pursuit and keep him on track. Madara disconnected himself from the Gedo Statue and died, entrusting Obito with his name: Madara Uchiha as it would be easier for Obito to gain influence if he assumed the identity of the Ghost of the Uchiha.
In the Fourth Great Ninja War, Madara was revived as a reincarnated shinobi by KabutoYakushi. Madara noticed that he was not fully revived but decided to play along. He engaged in the battle against the Allied Shinobi Force and the Five Kage. He tested their limits and even the limits of his reincarnated body. When the Edo Tensei no Jutsu was released, Madara surprised everyone by releasing himself from the binds of this Jutsu. Later, as he realized it was time to meet up with Obito and proceed with his plan, he annihilated the Five Kage and joined up with Obito.
When the Ten-Tailed Beast was revived and the previous Hokage joined the battlefield, Madara approached Hashirama to battle against him. Madara waited for Hashirama until Obito was defeated and changed sides. Obito decided to sacrifice himself and revive all the shinobi who lost their lives in the war by performing the Rinne-Rebirth Jutsu.
He was about to get sealed away when he used Black Zetsu’s to control Obito. Black Zetsu used his Body Coating Technique and forced Obito to revive Madara with Rinne-Rebirth Jutsu, and Madara fully came back to life for the second time.
Later, Madara himself became the Ten-Tailed Jinchuriki and introduced himself as the Second Sage of Six Paths. As he gained Otsutsuki-like traits, he became immune to Ninjutsu or Genjutsu. He was only vulnerable to Taijutsu and Sage Jutsu or Six Paths Chakra. He fought against Might Guy, who unleashed the Eight Gates Technique.
He nearly died because of Might Guy’s final attack but was saved by his regenerative abilities. He declared Might Guy the strongest Taijutsu user he ever faced. He then fought against Naruto and Sasuke, who had gained Six Paths chakra. He found himself to be struggling so he cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi to be on the safe side. When he found out that Naruto and Sasuke with the remaining of Team 7 managed to escape from the Infinite Tsukuyomi as its light was not able to penetrate Sasuke’s Perfect Susanoo.
He prepared to attack them but was betrayed by Black Zetsu. Black Zetsu pierced Madara’s chest with Obito’s hand. Madara was shocked at this development. He asked Black Zetsu how could he betray him, as he was the will materialization of Madara. Black Zetsu then revealed that he was Kaguya Otsutsuki’s will not Madara’s.
Black Zetsu then used Madara as the vessel to revive Kaguya Otsutsuki. As the battle between Team 7 and Kaguya concluded, all the tailed beasts were extracted, and Madara was free again, but was on the verge of death, as the Jinchuriki of a tailed beast died after their tailed beast is extracted.
In his last words, Madara stated that his world of peace died while Hashirama’s dream lived on, and apparently Hashirama’s approach was the better one. He then met his demise. Madara once stated that his only weakness was someone attacking him from behind. Both times he met he died, he was killed by an attack from behind, be it Hashirama or Black Zetsu.
Apparently, his philosophy was also proven to be true. He once stated that nothing ever goes according to plan in this accursed world. Madara planned everything for his dream world, but it did not go according to his plans. He was betrayed and manipulated by Black Zetsu and met his demise.
Madara is a conflictive character. Most of the fans agree with his goal but find it hard to sympathize with his approach. Although he wanted to create a world of dreams for everyone where they could without any bloodshed with all their loved ones and could live their dream life.
His upbringing was a reflection of the times he lived in; the constant fighting made him a perfectionist who would practice something until he perfected it, and his victories on the battlefield gave him a strong sense of confidence. Madara loved his family and devoted his life to their and his clan members well being. He even cut ties with Hashirama, a friendship he valued very much when it threatened the well-being of his family.
Madara was not immune to the Curse of the Uchiha. As Tobirama stated, the Senju clan is considered a clan that derived their prowess from love but that is incorrect. He stated that no one loves more deeply than an Uchiha. When Uchiha loses someone he loved, they lose all sense of logic and will go to drastic measures to fulfill their goals, be it revenge or a dream.
The despair Uchiha goes through upon the loss of a loved one is reflected by the awakening of their Sharingan. Izuna stated that the Sharingan is a blessing but it was actually the curse of the Uchiha. Madara was no exception.
When he lost his brother, he lost a sense of himself and when he feared the future the Uchiha clan had coming in the future, his clan that he loved very much, he set out to defy all the rules of nature and create a dream and manipulated and sacrificed anyone he saw fit. He believed that there was no wrong in sacrificing them as they all would be alive in his dream world.
Madara was a proud shinobi and was confident in his abilities. He once stated that he loved battle and the thrill and probability of death it came with. Above all, he enjoyed battling against Hashirama and going all out. Madara valued power and he possessed a lot of abilities himself. He deemed it beneath him to go all out against someone weak to him.
In his battle against the Five Kage, he mentioned it was unnecessary to use his full potential and asked the Kages which adult goes all out against mere children. As he valued strength, he was degusted of weakness. Above all, he hated a weak Senju. Madara spent his life against the Senju, mostly against Hashirama Senju, who was in a league of his own no matter what jutsu he tried. He was disgusted by Tsunade Senju as he considered her weak despite the fact that she belonged to the Formidable Senju clan and was a descendant of Hashirama Senju.
Although he was proud and somewhat arrogant, he would not hesitate to acknowledge someone’s strength. In his fight against Might Guy, he deemed him to be a worthy opponent and declared him the strongest Taijutsu user among all the countless shinobi he came across.
Although Madara was ruthless, and would often seem to be merciless, he was in fact a kind soul. He was willing to sacrifice himself for the happiness of others. He planned to create a dream world for everyone and he would live alone in solitude to protect this world. He was working towards the well-being of others. His approach was conflictive and ruthless, but he did want to establish peace. Hashirama claimed that despite his cunning and ruthlessness, Madara was really a good person.
Madara’s appearance changed throughout the course of the series. His appearances were modified with minor or major changes at different stages of his life.
Madara had black hair with blue undertones that were spikey and had fair skin. His hair was chin length and parted to frame the sides of his face when he was younger. He was wearing a blue long sleeve shirt and white pants for casual wear. He donned the typical Uchiha garb while fighting: a black shirt with the clan crest on the back, a high collar left slightly open, blue slacks, and bandages wrapped around his shins.
He had a white belt around his waist that concealed a bag that was likely filled with his ninja equipment. Later, a belt with pockets and different weapons was worn in place of his sash and he also carried his swords on another ribbon that was fastened over his shoulders.
Madara had grown his hair to a waist length as an adult, with shoulder-long bangs outlining the sides of his face and mostly hiding his right eye. He had numerous scars on his body. Even though he was still rather young, each of his eyes had more noticeable wrinkles. He occasionally wore scarlet armor that was made up of multiple metal plates that formed guards along his chest, waist, shoulders, and thighs.
The majority of the time, though, he continued to dress in the same standard Uchiha robes: a straightforward light-brown obi, a belt, and a blue high-collared, long sleeve mantle that divided down the lower half. He frequently wore an orange-brown gunbai, which was passed down in the Uchiha clan for generations with a long black chain up it during battle. He had a Hidden Leaf forehead protector on at one point. In the anime, he is also seen wearing two belt sashes to hold two of his swords, a brown leather sash to store some of his other weapons, and a metal belt.
Madara become incredibly weak and malnourished as he aged, and he also lost all of his teeth in addition to having thin, white hair. He was dressed simply in black, and his sickle served as a hasty cane. Madara's body's youth was restored when he was reincarnated, but the typical result was that he developed grey sclerae and little cracks all over his body.
Once he is properly revived, these vanish and he gained all the attributes that he possessed in his prime. After the Ten-Tailed beast was extracted from his body, he returned to his original look.
Madara is considered the strongest member in the history of the Uchiha Clan. It is believed that Sasuke Uchiha surpassed him but it was never confirmed. He is also one of the strongest shinobi in shinobi history.
In his journey from an aspiring shinobi to becoming a demi-god-like entity, Madara gained many abilities along the way. He possessed all five basic chakra nature with the addition of Yin and Yang Release. In addition to those, he also possessed Wood Release, Storm Release, and Yin-Yang Release. He was also capable of mastering any jutsu that he tries as he possessed the Rinnegan. Madara exceled in every form of jutsu, be it Ninjutsu, Genjutsu or Taijutsu. Madara specialized in Fire Release and Genjutsu. He used his Sharingan Genjutsu on many occasions in battles, leaving the target helpless against him.
As a possessor of Mangekyo Sharingan and the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, Madara was also privy to its special abilities. Madara was one of the few individuals in history to be the user of a Perfect Susanoo. In addition to those capabilities, he also possessed a Rinnegan ability that was unique to him, which is known as Limbo: Border Jail.
This unique ability made him capable of casting his shadow into Limbo, a world that coexists with the physical world but is undetectable and unperceivable to a human being. With one Rinnegan he was able to create only one Limbo but after he gained both his Rinnegan, he was capable of creating four Limbo at a time.
He excelled in lightning release techniques. He was the only user of Six Paths: Yin Release Lightning Dispatch and Sage Art: Gale Style Fang of Light.
As Madara became the Jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails, he gained the appearance and prowess of an Otsutsuki. Madara was able to fully utilize the prowess of the Ten-Tailed Beast. He was untouchable and the only way he could get dealt with damage was with either Taijutsu or Sage Jutsu/Six Paths Chakra. Madara also gained Truth-Seeking Orbs that floated behind his back in a circular motion.
These Truth-Seeking Orbs consisted of the five basic chakra natures and Yin-Yang Release. They could be used offensively or defensively and could attack at a very high speed and could be forged into different and versatile weapons. These capabilities made them a deadly weapon at his disposal.
With these extraordinary capabilities, he also gained a Rinne-Sharingan on his forehead. He used this legendary Dojutsu to reflect upon the moon and cast the Infinite Genjutsu, trapping everyone struck by its light in an endless genjutsu.

Other than the manga and its anime adaptation, Madara appears in other forms of media as well. Madara debuts in an ova titled, Naruto Shippuden: UNSG anime cutscenes and later appeared in the ova, Hashirama Senju vs Madara Uchiha. He made his debut in the movie category with the release of The Last: Naruto the Movie.
When it comes to novels, Madara makes his debut in Kakashi Hiden: Lightning in the Icy Sky.Madara made his debut in the gaming industry with the release of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 and appears in other series-related games.

A. Madara prolonged his life by siphoning chakra from the Gedo Statue. Madara survived his final encounter against Hashirama by using the Forbidden Jutsu, Izanagi, and rewriting reality itself. In his battle against Hashirama, Madara acquired some of his flesh and implanted it in his body, which caused the awakening of his Rinnegan. A. Madara Uchiha, also known as the Ghost of the Uchiha, was the second individual in the shinobi history to awaken Rinnegan. He gave his Rinnegan to Nagato Uzumaki as a child to be used in the future to bring him back using the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu.
