Asura Otsutsuki in Naruto

Otsutsuki Asura was Otsutsuki Hagoromo’s younger son. He is also the founder of the Senju Clan and Uzumaki Clan. He went on to inherit his father’s beliefs which later forced him to fight against his elder brother Indra.

After Asura and Indra died, their descendants continued the feud for years to come. Indra’s descendants, the Uchiha Clan, clashed with Asura’s descendants, the Senju clan. Neither of the clans knew why or how the hate arose. Even if his body was destroyed, Asura’s chakra lived on throughout history and reincarnated into numerous people.

Hashirama Senju was Asura’s reincarnation during the Warring States Period and he possessed what the Konoha people refer to as the Will of Fire, which many people believed in. At the same time, Madara Uchiha was the reincarnation of Indra, with whose assistance Hashirama founded the first ninja village, Konohagakure, ultimately establishing the ninja system. Madara later defected and continued his conflict with Hashirama.

Many years later, the transmigration cycle resumed with Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha as Asura and Indra’s reincarnates respectively. Ultimately, Naruto accomplished Asura’s ultimate purpose, which all earlier reincarnations had failed to: ending the rift between the two lines of the reincarnated brothers.

Asura’s principles inspired his father to see new world possibilities. Hagoromo created nine Tailed Beasts by separating the Ten-Tails’ chakra. He gave them each a unique name with the expectation that when the time came, they would be reunited as a single but distinct entity and someone would emerge to guide them to know what genuine power is. The beasts assumed Naruto to be that person after he befriended them a millennium later.

Asura’s Background

Asura’s birth came with complications which resulted in his mother’s untimely demise. Despite this tragedy, his youth was happy and joyous, spending his time either contentedly with his father and brother or playing with the local kids. When they were old enough, the two began studying Ninshū under their father in the hopes of one of them succeeding the great sage. He grew up in the shadow of his brilliant older brother Indra.

Despite having no inherent aptitude, he learned the importance of others and the strength of the friends and allies he made. He eventually awoke his own strength, which equaled Indra’s. He continued to admire his brother’s abilities but soon became concerned for Indra as he strangely became colder and more distant to others.

Hagoromo decided to send the two brothers on separate restoration missions to damaged regions as a test to see which of them would be Ninshū’s successor. Along the trip, Asura was accompanied by Taizō, a fellow villager who had previously been aided by Asura after being imprisoned by Indra for breaching a law for the sake of his ailing mother. Their trip through a terrible wasteland eventually led them to a small and surprisingly thriving settlement, where Asura sensed the presence of the God Tree.

The villagers were hostile towards Asura at first due to the recent robberies in their village, but he later earned their trust after healing a girl named Kanna. Asura inspected the village and saw that the main hill had been walled off and guarded. Kanna later asked Asura to assist in healing her mother, who, like many others in the community, had been hit by a peculiar ailment. He saw little roots and a significant chakra presence on the mother when studying her.

Asura and his two buddies, certain that the God Tree was involved, knocked out the guards and discovered a little cave that led to the inside of the God Tree. He contacted the village elder after realizing that the presence of the God tree seedlings was making the area lush but also making the villagers sick as they were devouring its nutrients. Having already realized the truth about the God Tree, the elder denied Asura’s plea to destroy the saplings, saying that their people had already lost so many before the saplings emerged, owing to the nature of the barren area.

Asura decided that the only way to aid the people was to supply them with a reliable water source, so he began digging a well for weeks. The locals eventually chose to assist him after being inspired by his humanitarian gestures. During that time, he started teaching them Ninshū, which they used to help them get closer to the well. After a year, they eventually struck water, causing a massive lake to form beside the settlement.

The villagers proudly burned down the God Tree saplings, and sick people began to get cured from the fresh water and Ninshū ways. Asura went home, with many of the villagers, including Kanna, who desired to accompany him to see where he learned Ninshū. He returned himself and reunited with his father and elder brother, the latter of whom had already finished his mission months before.

Hagoromo chose Asura after observing each brother’s performance on the expedition. While Asura claimed that Indra was the obvious choice because of his faster results, Hagoromo pointed out that the tactics Indra used to complete his purpose inadvertently destroyed the village by leaving them aimless and greedy.

The next night, Hagoromo gave Asura his authority, asking him to reach out to Indra and help him rediscover his compassion. As everyone began to celebrate Asura’s achievement, Indra attacked the village, manipulated by Black Zetsu, and opted to fight Asura for the title of heir while also seeking vengeance on his father and brother for denying him his birthright.

Asura begged Indra to reconsider, but his words fell on deaf ears because Indra firmly felt that power and force were the only true means of achieving peace and order. As Indra began attacking the population, Asura activated his Six Paths Chakra which allowed him to repel Indra’s attack. Recognizing that the confrontation was unavoidable, Hagoromo directed the villagers to pass on their chakra to Asura, allowing his power to completely mature. Asura used his new power to vanquish Indra, who fled in rage, intending to destroy Ninshū and his younger brother as well.

After a few years, Asura married Kanna, with whom he had two sons and a daughter. When Hagoromo was on his deathbed, he told his son about a final meeting with Indra, who swore to destroy all of his father’s work, even in the next life. Asura consoled his father and pledged to reincarnate alongside Indra to continue their feud, hoping for a happy resolution one day.

Asura’s Personality

Asura was a happy and loving child who looked up to and enthusiastically played with his older brother as a child. Despite being the son of the renowned Sage of Six Paths, he was born with no skill and hence was unable to accomplish much on his own. He emphasized on relying on cooperating with people instead.

He was shown as a child to be impatient and insecure about his limited abilities, in contrast to his elder brother and father. Despite this, Asura idolized Indra and would constantly commit himself to learning in order to be like his bigger brother.

Furthermore, he was certain that Indra would be a better candidate as Ninshū’s successor and made no attempt to take the crown. At the same time, he was a highly tenacious guy, never giving up on a goal he set for himself. He reawakened his own power with the support of innumerable friends and allies, as well as sheer hard work and perseverance. He thought that love was the way to live because he never lost sight of his convictions or his love for others. This eventually led Hagoromo to appoint Asura as his Ninshū’s successor, as the former desired the world to follow Asura’s way of thought.

When Indra began to break from their father’s philosophy and teachings, Asura, who loved his brother dearly and was hesitant to oppose him, felt compelled to battle Indra. Before any violent deeds between them, Asura attempted to reach out to Indra in hopes that the latter might turn away from his hatred, but he was unsuccessful.

Despite his rivalry with his elder brother, Asura always loved and respected his older brother and just longed to be reincarnated over and over again to confront Indra and eventually end their conflict, a hope that was realized in Naruto and Sasuke.

Asura’s Appearance

Asura had short, spiky brown hair, with two locks bound in bandages framing either side of his face like his brother. He had a harsh expression on his face, with a profound jawline and a short beard, similar to his father in the later years.

He appeared to be wearing a black forehead protector and later bandages around his forehead. He was dressed in a light-coloured kimono with magatama on the collar. A dark-coloured sash held the kimono closed. He was dressed in a black full bodysuit underneath.

Asura’s Abilities

Asura was initially un-talented, with no unique abilities. However, he proved to be a late bloomer, as he developed incredible skills and awakened his own hereditary power: his father’s “body” through years of grueling hard labor and dedication. This eventually brought him up to speed with his smart older brother, Indra. He was also a capable leader, with a large number of devoted followers. Because of Asura’s ideology, his father bestowed upon him power and appointed him as Ninshū’s successor. His might was able to decisively overcome Indra after inheriting his father’s power.

Physical Prowess

Asura obtained a notably powerful life-force and physical vitality as a result of his inherited power. He gained incredible energy and resilience enough to dig a big hole alone and without respite, in the quest for water. He was a taijutsu expert in battle. He had also demonstrated ability with both a shakujō and a sword, on several occasions.

Ninshū

While Asura was a far slower learner than Indra, he improved tremendously in his art over time. He eventually got skilled and informed enough to pass on his skills to others.

He has also shown proficiency in combat with this art, repelling his brilliant brother’s assaults with one of his own. He could detect the presence of chakra from long distances and heal most injuries. He also invented a method for creating swirling orbs to use as projectiles. He could also put people to sleep.

Nature Transformation

As a kid, he learned about the five elements through Indra’s usage of hand seals, and he was able to teach others how to use their particular affinity. He appeared to excel in Wind Release, manifesting a blade of wind to cut through bedrock or surround himself with it to shield himself from attacks, which was powerful enough to repel Indra’s Lightning Release.

By the time he met Indra, he had manifested the Wood Release, which could also employ Earth and Water Release. When combined with senjutsu, he could build massive structures to launch assaults with. He could use all five elements and the Yin-Yang Release after gaining his father’s abilities.

Six Paths Senjutsu

With his father’s power, he got access to the Six Paths Senjutsu which allowed him to augment himself and his different techniques. In this form, he was able to fly and materialize a massive three-faced, six-armed avatar known as Six Paths: Kunitsukami.

He could also summon nine Truth-Seeking Balls, which could be fashioned into various tools and constructs capable of combating Indra’s Susanoo. He could also combine them with his Kunitsukami, which grew according to the structure.
