Shukaku, the One-Tailed beast, was initially in possession of Sunagakure and was sealed into Bunpuku from birth, making him the first jinchuriki of the beast. Due to this, Bunpuku was feared and despised by his fellow villagers and was constantly imprisoned and guarded. The villagers even believed that he was Shukaku itself and had forgotten his real name.
In a conversation with Shukaku, Bunpuku revealed that being shunned by his fellow villagers didn't upset him as much as being separated from the tailed beast, which would result in his death as a jinchuriki. Shukaku compared Bunpuku to the Sage of the Six Paths, which brought the elderly priest to tears. He expressed gratitude for the kind words and said that he believed someone would save and guide Shukaku in the future.
However, eventually, Shukaku was extracted from Bunpuku, which led to his death.
After Bunpuku's death, the people of Sunagakure came to believe that he was Shukaku's living incarnation, further cementing his legacy in the village's folklore. Additionally, his peaceful and respectful attitude towards his tailed beast inspired other jinchuriki, such as Gaara, who learned to control his own beast and become a respected leader in his own right. Bunpuku's legacy as a wise and kind-hearted jinchuriki and fuinjutsu master lived on long after his death.
Bunpuku was a compassionate and wise individual, despite being shunned by the villagers of Sunagakure due to being the jinchuriki of Shukaku. He considered Shukaku his friend and had no resentment towards the tailed beast. Even when the guards insulted him, Bunpuku never retaliated, as he believed in peaceful coexistence and that understanding and acceptance could bridge any divide, even between a human and a beast. Shukaku saw similarities between Bunpuku and the legendary Sage of Six Paths due to the priest's profound respect and kindness towards a tailed beast.
Bunpuku was an old man with a bald head, a long, bushy mustache, and a beard. He wore clothes similar to those of a priest, with a white sleeveless shirt and a purple vest. He had black rings around his eyes. On the palms of his hands, he had the words "accept" and "heart" carved by his master.
As the jinchuriki of Shukaku, Bunpuku had access to the beast's immense chakra and sand manipulation abilities. He was able to keep Shukaku under control without the need for extra restraints. Unlike other jinchuriki, Bunpuku did not suffer from mental degradation due to his good relationship with his tailed beast. He was also skilled in fuinjutsu, as evidenced by his ability to seal Shukaku inside a tea kettle. It is also suggested that he had the ability to mold currents and use Dharma Power Sealing Technique: Sen no Rikyu. It is likely he was also skilled in playing the biwa due to his unique fuinjutsu.
