Denki used to get bullied by a group of kids but the day before his Ninja Academy ceremony, when he was again bullied by the same group of boys, Boruto spotted this and rescued Denki. Later, Denki told Boruto that he didn’t want to be a shinobi, but his father forced him to enroll in the Ninja Academy because he was a shinobi in his time. Boruto told him that he should do what he wanted and should stand up for himself.
After coming home, Denki told his father that he didn’t want to be the shinobi, but his father said that he had to become strong and that he should attend the academy. When he came out of his father's room, Nue gained control over him and made him take revenge on the bullies. Boruto became aware of Nue's control over Denki and followed him. Boruto got to know about Denki's revenge plan, but Boruto's words made Denki regain consciousness. When Boruto used his shadow clone to reach for the liver of the rail track, his foot slipped, and when he was about to fall from the train, Boruto asked Denki to help. Denki was able to save Boruto from falling. Later they decided to go to the Ninja academy opening ceremony by defective train, and then the train struck Naruto Uzumaki's stone face.
Denki joined the Academy, and when Boruto joined the class after suspension, Denki showed him the stats of his physical skills and told him that he was number two. When Iwabee Yuino and Boruto had an argument, Denki stood up for Boruto, but then Iwabee grabbed him by his collar, Boruto kicked Iwabee's hand to let Denki go. Later, Boruto and Iwabee fought in the Ninja Academy practice arena. Later, in the match between the boys and girls, Denki tried to hack the Ninja Academy system to gain an advantage in the challenge but got caught by the girls. The girls then won the match.
When the final test is near, Denki is worried because he does not have enough skill with ninjutsu, but Iwabee helps Denki with his shinobi skills. Denki helps Iwabee with studying, and together they pass the test. Later, the whole class went to Kirigakure to improve the bonds between the two nations. When Denki is on his way from the market to his room, he is kidnapped by Tsurushi Hachiya and his gang members. Boruto rescued Denki and was able to catch the rebellious gang.
Denki was asked, along with the other students, about their goals as the ninja classes' final exams came closer. When Denki told his father how well he was doing in school and that he wanted to become a well-known ninja, his father was delighted. Later, Denki took the Genin exam and passed the written test. In the second round, they had to take the bell from Kakashi Hatake and touch the chest buzzer which the other Academy teacher wore. In the end, they were not able to get a bell from Kakashi Hatake. Still, Kakashi passed them all because they showed teamwork and courage. Denki was placed on Team 5 alongside Iwabee Yuino and Metal Lee. Undo Ise became the captain of Team 5, and they were given their first task, which involved gardening.
Denki, alongside his teammates, entered the Chunin exams and was able to pass first, but in the capture flag test, they were defeated by Shinki and his teammates. Later, when Momoishki and Kinshiki Otsutsuki invaded the Chunin exam battle arena and destroyed the area, Denki used his laptop to find the escape route of the arena.
Denki and his group went to see how Boruto was doing while recovering in the hospital after Team 7 defeated Deepa. They were taken aback by how calm and positive Boruto sounded. While the rest of the group was happy, Iwabee started to worry that their buddies had lost their will to be shinobi. Denki and his friends were shocked to discover that Boruto and Sarada had quietly left the hospital when they checked on them.
Denki later started developing an experiment to enhance radio communications. His friends helped him while he worked. Although it eventually succeeded, stability was not sustained. Denki, though, remained determined to advance the science. The Seventh Hokage was impressed by Denki's project and the help of his friends.
To raise spirits and display stronger shinobi, Naruto made the decision to hold another Chunin Exam. Denki helped his team pass the written test by giving Iwabee the solutions using a machine that replicated his movements. Boruto encouraged him when he worried he would make mistakes that could make his team fail during a physical exam. When Boruto didn't recognize Kaito Kawanami, Denki gave him information about him.
Denki was able to use his great analytic abilities during the second exam to locate an injured ally, a man much bigger than him, and carry him out of the Forest of Death within the time limit. He was one of the 10 genin to pass the second exam, and the final exam would require him to compete against another genin one-on-one.
The next day, Denki and his teammates headed to the Scientific Ninja Weapons Team lab to prepare for the competition. Knowing that his physical combat abilities were weaker than those of the other contestants, Denki made use of the contestants' ability to use scientific ninja tools. He put Metal Lee to the test with his new creation and easily defeated him.
Iwabee was getting pumped up before his match against Wasabi when Denki checked on him before the finals. Denki encouraged him, but he fell short in his match. Denki noticed that all the opponents he may face were quite strong after Sarada defeated Chocho in the third bout. The fourth battle was supposed to pit Boruto versus Mitsuki, but neither of them showed up. Thus, they were disqualified, and Denki and Tsubaki's final contest kicked off instead.
Denki was able to put pressure on Tsubaki Kurogane by using a Lightning Release Suit of his own invention in combination with improved reflexes and movement analysis.
Eventually, Tsubaki could adjust, and she shattered the motion sensor visor. As the battle dragged on, the still-prototype suit began to overheat, so Denki made the decision to sacrifice it to intercept one of her blows, giving himself a chance to finish her off with his Lightning Release. He was declared the winner because, although worn out, he managed to stay awake when Tsubaki could not. Following his teammates' and Team 15's celebration of his and Wasabi's promotions to chunin, his pals clapped for him. Later, Denki was promoted to chunin and appointed as captain of Team 5.
Delivering brand-new automated puppets to help gold mining in Dot Island in the Land of Water was the first B-rank mission given to Denki and his team. They were to adjust the puppets' settings there as well until the developers joined them. Denki learned about the puppets' powers and the intricate geological structure of the island the night before the expedition and on the trip to the island.
While building the puppets on the island, bandits made themselves known to the mining workers, stole some gold, and locked everyone inside. Denki used the puppets to create a passageway out of the mine without causing the mine to collapse, thanks to his studies. He used the puppets to find the thieves through the looted gold and prevent them from escaping, remembering Katasuke's advice to adjust to the situation.
The Konoha research team was also taken prisoner when the Funato Clan raided the island later. Team 5 was pressured to withdraw and wait for a chance to act. Denki led Sarada and Mitsuki to them using his puppet; they were already on a mission to assist Team 5. Once everyone had caught up, they devised a plan to free the captives, with Team 5 in charge of securing a ship for their departure. Denki successfully used his Lightning Release to hotwire the spacecraft after struggling to kill the guards in the control room with a smoke-flash bomb.
Iwabee warned them of a powerful Chakra Cannon from the opponents' fortress ship on the way back to their meeting place with Kagura and the others. Denki barely managed to turn the ship away to avoid the initial shot. Having turned the Chakra Cannon back on the fortress, Kagura's team ultimately managed to save everyone. Team 5 was shocked to see members of the New Seven Ninja Swordsmen after picking up Kagura and the others. Before their return to Kirigakure, Sarada informed them that they were technically comrades now.
Taiki's death was discovered the following morning. Kyoho, who was discovered wiping blood off Kabutowari and had recently experienced a rage he had no memory of, came under suspicion. He maintained his innocence. Kawaki and Denki worked together to search the ship. Inconsistencies in the witness's evidence and Kawaki's suspicions about how quickly word of the murder had traveled led him to set up a trap by pretending Kyoho had died. Kobasoza was revealed as a result, and he was pursued to the ship's engine room, where he committed himself in order to destroy it. Denki tried his best to fix it, but he couldn't.
Kajiki, a renowned shipbuilder, eventually found them. He delighted in Denki's ability to maintain the ship for as long as he did. Kajiki, unable to fix the engine, brought the ship back to his port for correct repairs. Denki was eager to assist with the repairs there because he wanted to learn as much as possible if the ship encountered other problems. They discovered around halfway through that Ikada, Kajiki's apprentice, had neglected to stock up on an essential component for the engine. While Denki continued assisting with all other available repairs and serving the islanders food, Boruto was dispatched with Ikada to get it.
The Funato Clan assaulted the island later that evening while employing leeches to seize possession of several individuals. By deploying bug spray on his teammates and himself, Denki quickly intervened to save everyone. Denki joined Iwabee in defending the repaired ship as Metal dealt with more tightly controlled citizens. By daybreak, the Funato onslaught had been stopped thanks to Denki and Kagura's discovery of a coded message near one of the fights.
With Sarada and Kagura, Denki tried to understand the message until Iwabee made a remark about origami, which led Kagura to show how to fold the paper, exposing its contents. The Funato intended to secretly attack Kirigakure while the majority of their men were engaged in the sea-fight as a diversion. To intercept the Funato, Kagura led them to his childhood home in a village on their way. Denki was entrusted with aiding in the destruction of two villages to force the Funato into a ravine and disadvantage them.
The Funato arrived at the collapsed bridges the following day, and Denki and Iwabee spied on them. After realizing that the dispatched scouts were in advance, the two hastened back to the town to alert everyone. They started evacuating the inhabitants to convince the scouts that there was nothing odd about the village. One had a crying infant, but Denki covered it up by pretending it was a cat.
Team 5 was dispatched to the ravine to protect the town after setting up traps, but they quickly returned when a snake Mitsuki sent warned them that there were problems. They arrived in time to use a landslide to deflect Funamushi's attack. In order to thwart Funamushi's jutsu, non-combatants were evacuated from the settlement, and water sources were shut off. Denki resisted the arrival of the Funato. Funamushi was unafraid and used his jutsu by draining the blood of his own warriors. Everyone put down their weapons as Funamushi had Kagura captive after weakening Kagura by cutting through his strike. They were shocked to see him stab Kagura in the chest.
Everyone struck back at Funamushi on return. With his Water Release, he originally repelled them, but Boruto activated his Kama and landed a Rasengan, forcing Funato to escape. After Kagura's funeral, everyone decided to follow Sarada's instructions. Sarada chose to respect Kagura's last request by waiting for the village since she knew Funamushi would return with his desire for revenge. The food storage had been destroyed, so Team 5 offered to go foraging for food while they recovered from the attack. This would also allow them to watch for Funato movement near the hamlet and report it.
It was insufficient, though, and the town had to ration food. The villagers refused to eat to give the shinobi a greater chance of defending them. Still, the shinobi decided to let them eat. Some kids informed Kawaki, who also led Denki and Iwabee to fruit-bearing trees beyond the mountains. When they got there, they encountered other Funato clansmen, who overwhelmed them and captured them. As the Konoha shinobis were able to solve the Funato pirate's case, they came back to Konoha.
Denki is a polite and kind-natured guy. He is mostly seen as nervous whenever a fight breaks or anyone attacks, but still, he has the courage to solve things in tougher times. He is intelligent and wise as a person. He has great love for his friends and family, he also respects everyone despite their status, which is also one of his best qualities.
Denki wears a dark blue scout shirt and ¾ pants of the same color, and the right side of his pants has an extended pocket in which he keeps his equipment. His head protector hides under his front hair, which is black in color, and he wears shinobi sandals.
Denki’s greatest ability is his intelligence and his skill to analyze the battle situation. He has a Lighting release ability that is not as powerful as others. He is one of the few chunin-rank shinobi in his age group because of his skill and ability in Ninja tech. He created a device for Iwabee that copies his hand movement, and with that, Iwabee was able to pass the first written test in the chunin exam.
In the final exam, Denki improved the combat suit which was given by Katasuke Tono (the Konoha Ninja Tech Head). He was able to defeat Tsubaki with the help of a suit and became a chunin-rank shinobi.
