Ebisu’s Background

When Ebisu was a genin, he was teamed up with Might Guy and Genma Shiranui, under Chōza Akimichi’s leadership. They were once confronted by a generation of Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist where they got salvaged by Might Duy. During the Chūnin Exams, Ebisu and his team clashed with Team Minato in the Forest of Death where Guy quickly dispatched Obito Uchiha. When Kakashi Hatake was promoted to jōnin sometime later, Rin Nohara gathered their class to plan a small secret celebration in which Ebisu took part.

Life as a Trainer

Ebisu was in charge of training Konohamaru, who is the grandson of the Third Hokage. Konohamaru always aspired to be the Hokage following in his grandfather’s footsteps. Ebisu was determined to help Konohamaru train to achieve his dreams and ensured to stay close to him for his training as well as safety. At the same time, he despised Naruto for having the same dreams and he looked at him no differently than the other villagers, as being a nuisance and mischievous brat. At one point, Ebisu was put in charge to train Naruto temporarily, which is when he challenged Naruto to try to escape his radius to escape from having to be trained by him. This was when Naruto labeled him as the “Closet Pervert”.

Later, Ebisu was put in charge of his own team which consisted of Konohamaru Sarutobi, Udon and Moegi. The team completed their first mission of finding a lost cat and reporting back to the higher authorities of the village. This is when Konohamaru starts grumbling about being assigned to lower rank missions for which Ebisu scolds him and apologizes to the Fifth Hokage.

Ebisu Clashes with Pain

During the Pain invasion, Ebisu was present in the village with the duty of protecting the civilians and his comrades when he came into confrontation with one of the Pains, asking about the whereabouts of Naruto Uzumaki. Ebisu, like the other shinobi of the Hidden Leaf, fiercely refuses to disclose the location, putting his own life on the line. When his pupil Konohamaru saw him troubled, he tricks Pain’s Naraka Path and surprisingly performs the Rasengan, resulting in the death of one of the six paths of Pain.

It is during this arc that Ebisu acknowledges Naruto for his efforts in winning the hearts and trust of the villagers who once saw him as nothing but a menace. After Naruto confronts the final Pain (Nagato Uzumaki) and returns to the village, everyone is seen cheering him on for his hard work and perseverance which saved the village. Ebisu talks about his journey from being a mischievous kid to growing up to be a fierce shinobi, and accepts that he himself thought of Naruto as nothing but a burden to the village, and how with time everyone accepted him and respected him when he proved himself by his consistent success in various deadly missions.

Ebisu during the Fourth Great Ninja War

During the war, few shinobi were put in charge of guarding the village, as it was still recovering from Pain’s attack. Ebisu was overseeing the young shinobi and other civilians during this time. He gathers several villagers discerning about probable attacks on the village. The Allied Mothers Force reassures him that they will be prepared to defend the village. His team approaches him about sightings of giants and tailed beasts nearby, and Ebisu tells them to inform their mothers as they would take care of it.

Last appearance

After the end of the Fourth Shinobi War, Ebisu was last seen during the preparations for Hinata and Naruto’s wedding. His whereabouts have since been not precisely known.

Ebisu’s Personality

Ebisu has a stringent personality and is someone who always follows the rule book. He is truly dedicated to his village and his students. He always showed his faith and true commitment towards his student Konohamaru, and always gave his all to train Konohamaru to become an Elite Ninja, and eventually, the Hokage. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Ebisu was back in the village, in charge of taking care of the young Shinobis.

Initially, Ebisu was petty towards Naruto as he believed Naruto was nothing but some troublemaker, and disregarded his dreams of becoming the Hokage as he believed only those who belong to a certain class can achieve such high ranks. With time, Ebisu’s insights towards Naruto changed excessively after he acknowledged everything Naruto did for Konohamaru. During Pain’s invasion of the village, Ebisu protected Naruto by not disclosing his location to the enemy and almost getting killed in the process. He was far more impressed when Konohamaru performed the Rasengan which he discreetly learned from Naruto, to kill one of the paths of Pain.

Besides being an Elite trainer, Ebisu has a perverted personality which has been portrayed when Naruto performs his “Sexy Jutsu”. During the short period of time when Naruto was under his training, Ebisu tried to peek into female baths, and so he was often termed as the “Closet Pervert” by Naruto. Frequently, when he is worried, he pushes his sunglasses up his nose.

Ebisu’s Appearance

Ebisu has dark hair and brown eyes and he is always seen with his sunglasses on. He wears the standard blue outfit of Konoha usually without the jacket, and when dispatched out on missions he adorns the standard flat jacket. He wears his head band like a bandanna.

When he was a genin, he wore his hair swept to the sides of his face and wore a dark outfit along with his trademark sunglasses with a thin, brown shark of sorts around his shoulders with two ends tied. Later he adorned his head band like a bandanna when he was promoted to chūnin with the flak jacket.

Ebisu’s Abilities

Ebisu is able to perform the Shadow Clone technique and Fire Release : Fire Argon Bullet. He is exceptionally skilled in the usage of hand seals and has been portrayed performing taijutsu when he clashed with the Naraka Path of Pain. Besides his performing abilities, he is also an elite Jonin tutor. He trained Konohamaru for a brief period. According to Kakashi, Ebisu is one of the most skilled trainers in Konoha. Additionally, he possessed Fire Release chakra nature in the anime.
