Life of Ganno

Like his dad, Ganno was a painter in the big city of Redaku. He was really into painting, so he always had a paintbrush and didn't care much for anything else. People really liked him, especially the nobles, because he painted their portraits. But he used those portraits to make the noble folks fight with each other. When they found out, he got caught for betraying the state and was thrown into jail for 17 years.

Now, even in the prison at the Astronomy Research Institute, Ganno didn't give up his love for painting. About a month before the events of Sasuke Retsuden, he managed to get some reddish-brown rocks from the quarry where he and the other prisoners were working. He ground those rocks into a fine powder and cooked them with skin from his foot. The result? Red paint. He used pine needles as brushes and painted his fingernails. Because he was in prison and his tools were always getting taken away by the guards, his paintings didn't last long. But he stuck to it, making around one artwork a week.

On the first day of Sasuke's imprisonment, he went to lunch with Ganno, Jiji, and Penjira, but then a few other prisoners tried to fight Sasuke, who defeated them easily.

Then, on the same night, Ganno's cellmates, Penjira and Jiji, asked him to play a game called Chinchirorin, but he said no because he was busy painting his fingernails. Jiji thought Ganno was wasting his time, but Ganno didn't listen. Penjira convinced Sasuke Uchiha to play with him, and Sasuke won on his very first try! That surprised everyone.

A few nights later, Jiji claimed he figured out when Meno, a reptile who monitors the prisoners, would pass by. Ganno and Penjira didn't believe him at first, but then Meno walked by just as Jiji said. Jiji used a branch from a tree that Meno liked, and he coaxed Meno closer to their cell. Jiji convinced Ganno to pet Meno, and Ganno reluctantly did it. Surprisingly, Meno didn't mind Ganno's touch, so Penjira tried too. But when Penjira got too close to the cell's edge, Menō got agitated and tried to attack. Penjira was okay, but a lantern got knocked over, and Ganno had to clean up the spilled oil.

A few days later, at dinner, Ganno notices the prison's new doctor, Sakura Haruno, sitting alone in the cafeteria. He asks if he can join her, and they start talking about the sunset they can see from the window. Ganno sees Sakura's wedding ring, which he hasn't seen her wear before, and asks about her husband.

Sakura talks openly about her husband, describing all the good things about him. Even though she doesn't mention her husband's name, Ganno figures out that she's talking about Sasuke, and Sakura doesn't do a great job denying it.

Ganno explains that Sasuke used to sit in the same spot, looking at a tree outside, and he never understood why until Sakura came to the prison. Sakura doesn't get what Ganno means, so he gives her a compliment about her unique hair color and leaves. Later, Sakura realizes that the tree Sasuke stared at looked like a cherry blossom, which must remind him of her.

One night, some dragons return to life in the prison and start attacking the prisoners. Ganno tries to hide, but one of these dragons, with feathers, senses and goes after him. Ganno tries to run but falls, and the dragon is about to crush him. But then, Meno, now on Sasuke's side, fights the feathered dragon, giving Ganno a chance to escape.

Ganno eventually finds Penjira, and they see Sakura fighting another feathered dragon. When Sakura knocks the dragon down, Ganno and Penjira jump on it and keep hitting its knees to stop it from healing. Other prisoners see what they're doing and join in, keeping the dragons busy until Sasuke and Sakura can send them back to the afterlife.

Ganno’s Personality

Ganno is dedicated and focused on his painting, and he's also observant, noticing things about people like Sakura's ring and her connection to Sasuke. He's quick to adapt and work together with others in tough situations, like when they face the dragons.

Ganno’s Appearance

Ganno is an old man with grey hair and thin, sunburnt arms. The red paint that adorns his fingernails makes him easily identifiable to others, even from a distance.
