When Genma became a genin, he was assigned to a team with Might Guy and Ebisu, led by Chōza Akimichi. They were ambushed at one time by a generation of Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, only to be saved by Might Duy.
His team faced off against Team Minato as part of their Chūnin Exams. Aside from that, little is known about Genma’s origins, except that he is an elite guard to the Hokage. He learned the Flying Thunder Formation while serving under the Fourth Hokage.
Following Hayate’s death, Genma presided over the final round of the Chunin Exams. He informs Neji after his struggle with Naruto that even a caged bird can eventually liberate itself.
As the invasion begins, he wonders if Orochimaru is commanding the assault as he fights against Baki. After Gaara exits the arena, he tells Sasuke to pursue him, telling him that he is already at the Chūnin level and that he must do everything it takes to safeguard Konoha. His fight, however, is cut short as the invasion is called off.
When Tsunade comes to the village, Genma and Aoba are tasked with announcing her as the Fifth Hokage. He is then assigned to a mission alongside Raidō, Iwashi Tatami and Shizune.
When he and Raidō return home after completing the mission, they run into the Sound Four. He inquired as to what they were carrying because they were approaching Konoha. Sakon retaliates by throwing a kunai at him, which Genma deflects with his senbon.
To defeat Raidō and Genma, the Sound Four used level two of their cursed seals which left Genma and Raidō severely injured and in desperate need of medical attention. Shizune stabilizes their illness and transports them to Konoha for more care.
Genma briefly appeared a few times until the commencement of the Fourth Shinobi World War.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Genma and Raidō were tasked with guarding the daimyō at their safe house. While on duty, he and Raidō talked about the daimyō and their ongoing medal-naming debate. He advised Raidō not to lock them because it was their job, and that without medals, they would have no idea what was honorable and what wasn’t.
He then informed him that if he just stood about thinking of medals, he’d never acquire one, and that he should keep vigilant because they were about to relocate. Later, he along with Raidō and Chōjūrō guarded the Fifth Mizukage Mei Terumī when Black Zetsu made an appearance. When Naruto’s shadow clone came on the battlefield and slammed head first into a tree after being sidestepped by Black Zetsu, Genma agreed with Raidō that Naruto had not changed much and still went into a fight without thinking.
Genma was impressed by Chōjūrō’s sword skills when fighting Black Zetsu. Shikaku afterwards contacted and instructed Genma to not make any jokes because they were in dire straits. After informing him that the real Madara Uchiha had been reincarnated on the battlefield, Genma declared that he couldn’t help himself this time.
As he, Raidō and Iwashi prepared to transport Mei using Minato’s Flying Thunder God Technique per Shikaku’s orders, he explained to her that he was a member of the Hokage bodyguard detail and had been taught to utilize the technique by the Fourth during his reign. They completed the technique and stood behind the other Kage as they attacked Madara as soon as Tsunade — who had been marked with the method’s seal — was carried to the battlefield.
As Mei and A engaged Madara in battle, Iwashi predicted his defeat prematurely. Genma, however, saw the degree of damage inflicted on the surroundings and urged his partner to stay focused, while Raidō commented that there is no way to merely push their way through.
Dodai then enlisted their assistance in tracking down the Kabuto-controlled Mū, who had begun to emerge from the debris. The four men then pursue the Tsuchikage, but their target is quickly slapped away by A during the Raikage’s assault on Madara. They continued to pursue the evasive Mū while the combat between the Kage and Madara raged on.
Genma and his friends observed as Mū was surrounded in a type of light before beginning to disassemble once the Impure World Reincarnation was released. Later, Naruto and Sasuke eventually release the Infinite Tsukuyomi, liberating Genma and the rest of the planet from the genjutsu and bringing the Fourth Shinobi World War to a close.
On the day of the Sixth Hokage’s inauguration, Genma and other shinobi guard the village gate, refusing entry to anybody who is not authorized.
Genma is shown to be very calm, impartial and composed in his acts. He is never depicted being boisterous or lost in difficult situations, and he is self-assured enough to command huge groups of ninja.
It was also claimed that he despises Orochimaru for wielding power. He is also a cheerful person who is prone to wisecracking at times. When Shikaku Nara called, he made a point of telling Genma not to make light of the situation.
Genma has shoulder-length brown hair that falls about his face and brown eyes. He always has his distinctive senbon in his mouth and wears his forehead protector like a bandana, as well as the typical jōnin attire. He wore a dark, baggy attire with a hooded red and black jacket as a genin. He also wore a black choker and a leg strap.
As a well-known veteran shinobi, Genma is known for participating in challenging missions due to his abilities. He was able to hold his own against an elite jōnin like Baki, as seen by his use of two kunai to deflect two of the latter’s mid-air attacks.
While physically exhausted from a previous operation, he was able to coerce the Sound Four into activating the second stage of their cursed seals with the help of Raidō Namiashi. His qualities are further validated by his placement in the Hokage Guard Platoon.
During the reign of the Fourth Hokage, he was taught the Flying Thunder Formation Technique so that he could teleport to the Hokage’s side as needed. This technique is performed in partnership with his fellow guards, Raidō and Iwashi Tatami. He can also spit a senbon with enough force to deflect a kunai from his mouth.
