Hidan’s Background

Hidan belonged to Yugakure, also known as the Village Hidden in Hot Water, and was an S-rank shinobi. Unfortunately, very little is known about his childhood as his past is still shrouded in mystery.

Hidan grew enraged with how things were progressing after Yugakure turned from a shinobi village to a tourist destination. Before fleeing Yugakure and joining the cult-like Jashin religion, he killed his neighbors because he believed the shinobi who lived there were meant to be killed. The way of Jashin worships a deity named Lord Jashin and its core principle central tenet appears to be a blatant slaughter, with anything short of complete annihilation being condemned as sin. Hidan was granted immortality after testing Jashin's undiscovered method. After joining the Jashinists, he started believing that anyone who does not worship Jashin is meant to be killed.

At some point, Yugakure hired Akatsuki to eliminate Hidan. Konan, Kakuzu and Itachi Uchiha were dispatched to finish the job. At the encounter, Hidan destroyed one of Kakuzu’s hearts and was surprised to witness that Kakuzu had survived. After witnessing his abilities, Konan offered Hidan a chance to join the Akatsuki, which he accepted because he was intrigued by Kakuzu’s abilities. He became a member of Akatsuki where he was paired up with Kakuzu.

In his early years in the Akatsuki, Kakuzu had already killed his first four partners due to his short temper, and had used their hearts for his Earth Grudge Fear jutsu before teaming up with Hidan. The major reason he was paired up with Kakuzu was that Kakuzu could not kill Hidan, as he was immortal. He wanted to kill Hidan as well but he tolerated him, just because he could not get rid of him; a feeling he shared with Hidan, as Hidan could not get rid of Kakuzu either. Kisame Hoshigaki, another member of Akatsuki, jokingly referred to Kakuzu and Hidan as the Zombie Combo.

In the Akatsuki Suppression Mission Arc, Hidan and Kakuzu were tasked with hunting down and capturing the Two-Tails Jinchuriki, Yugito Nii, which they accomplished relatively easily, proving how strong the Akatsuki members are.

After they handed over the jinchuriki to Zetsu, the duo headed over to the Land of Fire, where midway through, Kakuzu decided to attack the Fire Temple and capture a monk, Chiriku, to claim the hefty bounty he had on his head. Hidan was not on board with this as he did not agree with Kakuzu’s obsession with money but had no other choice other than to follow him. After defeating Chiriku and annihilating the monks present, the duo headed on their way.

As Hidan and Kakuzu reached the bounty station and claimed the bounty on Chiriku's head, they were ambushed by a Konoha (Hidden Leaf Village) shinobi team led by the jonin and former member of the Twelve Guardian Shinobi, Asuma Sarutobi. A monk who escaped their grasp informed them of the situation, and the Konoha shinobi had been preparing for them.

While Kakuzu was still inside the station, the Konoha shinobi initially attacked Hidan, hoping to eliminate him and get the drop on Kakuzu. Asuma Sarutobi, Shikamaru Nara, Kotetsu Hagane, and Izumo Kamizuki ambushed Hidan. To the surprise of the Konoha squad, Hidan asked who the shinobi were while appearing as though he did not even notice that he had been stabbed in the chest by two huge kunai knives. They were shocked to learn that Hidan was immortal and cannot be killed in the conventional sense. After Kakuzu made his way outside, he decided to follow Hidan's advice and remain on the sidelines. Hidan was cautioned by Kakuzu not to let Asuma leave because he had a hefty bounty on his head as well.

Soon, Hidan managed to acquire some of Asuma’s blood for his ritual and initiated his curse technique. As Hidan activated his curse technique and stepped inside the Jashin marking on the ground, Asuma attacked him with his Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning. To their surprise, Asuma was the one who got burned by his own attack, which was later revealed to be the outcome of Hidan’s technique.

Shikamaru attempted to keep Hidan immobilized once more as Hidan was about to kill Asuma but struggled to do so after becoming aware of what was happening. Shikamaru analyzed everything Hidan had said and done up to that point while Hidan was momentarily restrained, eventually uncovering the flaw in Hidan's technique. Asuma was momentarily released from Hidan's curse after Shikamaru forced Hidan out of his symbol.

After getting caught up in what was going on, Asuma first confirmed that he was released from Hidan’s curse by cutting his ear and then beheading him. To everyone’s surprise, even though he was immobilized and his head was separated from his body, Hidan was still capable of speaking and communicating. Then, Kakuzu stepped in and sewed Hidan’s head back to his body.

Hidan re-entered his symbol and attacked Asuma with his scythe which Asuma successfully dodged but the scythe ended up burying itself in Hidan’s vital organs, which destroyed Asuma’s vital organs in return. Hidan then got stabbed through the heart, which destroyed Asuma’s heart. Shikamaru rushed to Asuma but collapsed from exhaustion when reinforcements came to back them up. Hidan wanted to kill them all and enjoy the ecstasy he felt in pain but had to retreat due to orders from Pain, leader of the Akatsuki. Hidan and Kakuzu headed to a remote location and spent three days sealing the Two-Tails.

After the sealing is finished, Hidan and Kakuzu start looking for Naruto Uzumaki, the jinchuriki of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. Team Asuma, which consisted of Shikamaru Nara, Ino Yamanaka, and Choji Akamichi along with Kakashi Hatake for the time being, confronted them to avenge Asuma's demise. Although Kakuzu managed to evade Shikamaru’s attack, Hidan was caught by surprise and was forced to fight Kakuzu under Shikamaru’s control. Kakashi Hatake thought he had killed Kakuzu, so he went to assassinate Hidan as well. However, he was caught off guard by Kakuzu's attack who was alive and kicking.

Hidan charged at Kakashi while Kakuzu unleashed a barrage of attacks on them. Hidan was released from Shikamaru's shadow due to its intrinsic time restriction. Shikamaru offered to draw Hidan away after realizing that the two-man Akatsuki squad needed to be divided because they were too powerful together.

After being caught by Shikamaru's technique so many times, Hidan was determined not to fall victim to it again and avoided the shadows. Hidan didn't notice Shikamaru when he suddenly appeared nearby and punched him in the face to knock him out while he was paying attention to the shadow attacks. Hidan blocked the punch, which caused their shadows to connect and Hidan to be caught in Shikamaru's Shadow Imitation Jutsu once again.

Shikamaru then led Hidan to a nearby forest and separated him from Kakazu. As soon as Shikamaru’s jutsu wore off, Hidan attacked him and acquired some of his blood. Hidan then proceeded to stab himself in the heart to kill Shikamaru. Then, Shikamaru attacked him from behind, trying to sever his head but the cut was too shallow. To his surprise, Shikamaru was safe and sound. He then revealed that the blood Hidan used for his ritual in fact belonged to Kakuzu, which destroyed one of Kakuzu’s hearts on the battlefield.

Shikamaru then restrained Hidan with his shadow and trapped him with explosive tags and wire that he had prepared in advance. Shikamaru then caused a ditch to appear beneath Hidan and revealed that the Nara Clan Forest that they were in now belonged to the Nara Clan and he set up a trap for him in advance. He then claims that his clan shares a deep bond with the deer residing in the forest and they will ensure that Hidan is trapped here for eternity. Shikamaru then lit Asuma’s lighter, appeared to be lighting Asuma’s cigarette and threw the lighter at Hidan, causing the tags to explode. Hidan had been blown to pieces. Hidan's separated head vowed to kill Shikamaru in any way possible as his body plunged into the hole below. Hidan was crushed under the debris as Shikamaru triggered the pit to collapse.

After this incident, he hasn’t appeared since and we haven’t received any updates confirming his demise, so technically, he is still alive. It is also possible that he died due to malnutrition but it is not confirmed yet.

Hidan’s Personality

Hidan is an oddball of sorts. He is undoubtedly one of the few antagonists in the series who can be categorically labeled as evil. Unlike most of the adversaries who did what they did for the greater good, Hidan shunned such notions. He did evil things and killed people because he simply could.

Hidan had no moral inhibitions about the people he killed. He saw bloodshed as a holy duty and frequently took great joy in making his opponents' deaths as agonizing as possible. His village's decline into peace infuriated him, and he killed his neighbors before fleeing because he was adamant that shinobi were born to murder and relish in violence. Hidan is a sadist who takes pleasure in torturing people. He demonstrated a masochist side as he openly reveled in the shared suffering between him and his cursed victims. He referred to this feeling of pain as pure ecstasy.

Hidan is a borderline psychotic maniac who would cherish the agony of others. Furthermore, he only had respect for his religion and his Lord Jashin. He is the only member of the Akatsuki who would often threaten Pain, the leader of Akatsuki. He would often comment that he would kill Pain one day and had no respect for him whatsoever.

Hidan’s Appearance

Hidan has unusual purple eyes and medium-length, slicked-back gray hair. Before joining the Akatsuki, he had bandages wrapped around his stomach, no shirt on with a black overcoat paired with maroon pants, and sporting the long black shinobi sandals. His forehead protector bore a slash across the Yugakure symbol, signifying his rouge status. He also carried a triple-bladed scythe and a Jashin amulet around his neck with him all the time.

After joining the Akatsuki, he continued to wear no shirt but did carry the organization's cloak, which he kept slightly open to reveal his Yugakure forehead protector around his neck and Jashin amulet. He switched his maroon pants with gray pants after joining the Akatsuki.

Hidan’s Abilities

Hidan is from a rather strong generation and one of the strongest shinobi of his time. Hidan is a member of the S-rank shinobi and a valuable member of the infamous criminal organization, the Akatsuki.

Although he is not from a strong bloodline, Hidan possessed great physical prowess. Hidan worshiped Lord Jashin and acquired immortality. Because of his unique prowess and peculiar personality, Yugakure did not try to apprehend him even though he was a rogue ninja, simply because there was not a single shinobi in Yugakure capable of defeating him. Due to his unusual abilities, the Akatsuki sought him out and recruited him as their member where he was partnered with Kakuzu.

Hidan is a capable shinobi with mastery in bukijutsu. He wielded a triple-bladed scythe for long and short-range attacks. Although the triple-bladed scythe is a deadly weapon, Hidan did not use it for eliminating his opponents. He merely used it to increase his range in order to collect his opponent’s blood for his rituals. Although Hidan is rather quick to anger, he possesses surprisingly sharp reflexes and great physical strength. He was capable of defeating and capturing the Two-Tails Jinchuriki, Yugito Nii, Chiriku, one of the Shinobi Guardian Twelve and Asuma Sarutobi, a top jonin of Konoha.

Even though he had other abilities as well, immortality was the ace up his sleeve. Through experimenting with Jashinists' various techniques, he acquired immortality. With this, he could not be killed or die willingly. The only way stated to be able to kill him is through malnourishment. Over the years, he had been stabbed, impaled, and mutilated but nothing could kill him. Even though he cannot die, that does not mean he is incapable of feeling pain, but he grew fond of it and found it to be the ultimate ecstasy. In addition to this, Hidan also possesses great healing prowess. He is capable of healing any wounds or injuries rapidly without leaving a scar.

With great reflexes, Hidan also possessed an agile body that could react to it. He has great stamina and durability as he has been seen fighting prolonged battles with no fatigue whatsoever. Furthermore, no matter what kind of injury his body has received, his body is capable of functioning just as new. The only exception to this is when his head is chopped off. Even though he is capable of conversing with his head chopped off, he is unable to control his body in this state.

In all of his appearances, Hidan has been spotted performing a single ninjutsu, known as Curse Technique: Death Controlling Possessed Blood. With this technique, Hidan is capable of injuring or killing his opponent by inflicting damage on his own body. Deadly as it may be, it is essential to meet some requirements, which Hidan refers to as rituals, to perform this technique. Hidan first has to draw and consume some of his opponent’s blood. As he consumes his opponents’ blood, their bodies are somehow linked and Hidan gets a grim reaper-like appearance with black skin and white bone-like markings. Then, Hidan creates a Jashin symbol and enters it to complete the ritual. Now, Hidan is essentially a voodoo doll. Now, he damages his own body and all the damage is inflicted on his opponent as well. Because of his immortality, Hidan survives while his opponents often succumb to their injuries.
