Hohozuki and Ameyuki were from the same village. While everyone else in the village disliked Ameyuki, Hohozuki was his only friend and didn't hate him. One day, slavers attacked the village and kidnapped Hohozuki and other villagers. Ameyuki saved them by using his special ability to defeat the slavers. Instead of being grateful, the villagers feared Ameyuki and tried to kill him.
When Hohozuki learned about this, he convinced Ameyuki to leave the village and go to a place called Shangri-la, where they could live in peace. However, the villagers discovered their plan before they could escape and killed Hohozuki. Ameyuki, feeling guilty for Hohozuki's death, decided to live on as Hohozuki in his memory. He used a technique to transform himself to have Hohozuki's appearance.
Hohozuki was kind and friendly because he treated Ameyuki as a good person and saved him from kidnappers.
