Hotaru in Naruto

Hotaru met Utakata after he saved her from a group of ninja who were actually after him. She brough him to her fort after he was wounded and collapsed. Hotaru asked him to become her instructor after Utakata was healed, much to his dismay. He reluctantly began to teach her chakra control by standing on water. She was able to achieve it the next day after training all night.

Later, she was taught Water Release: Wild Water Wave and expected that she would need water-nature chakra to master, only to find that she already had it. Later on, Tonbee had Hotaru and Utakata take the clan’s kinjutsu so that enemy ninja could not retrieve it when the Magaki group came looking for the Tsuchigumo clan’s secret technique. Later, a fight broke out between Naruto and Utakata when the former believed Utakata was attacking Hotaru.

She broke up the fight and Utakata left her, deciding that Team 7 is capable of protecting her. She convinced him not to leave while he went away in one of his bubbles.

Later, Naruto argues with her as she insists that she didn’t need any protection. Yamato devises a plan to convince her to accept it. Hotaru thanks Naruto when they reach the village and leaves her with the Tsuchigumo clan.

She was brought to a secret room by the villagers who had betrayed her to the hands of the enemy. Hotaru escapes tricking them with a bomb disguised as the secret technique scroll but is later captured again. Soon after, Utakata arrives and saves her. Hotaru once again begged him to be his student, despite his obvious refusal.

When Utakata questioned her for her determination to be his student and protect the scroll, she replied, it was her grandfather’s final wish as the technique was meant to restore the Tsuchigumo clan. She further went to show him the secret kinjutsu that was embedded on her back which left Utakata horrified. While they were still talking, some Kiri-hunter-nin arrived and took Hotaru as hostage and restrained Utakata. Fortunately, Naruto arrived and took on one of the Anbu with a clone.

Soon after, Kiri Anbu Captain appears and strikes a deal with Yamato to free Hotaru in exchange for Utakata after their mission is complete. Some time later, Hotaru collapses from a fever and Utakata tends to her wounds. It is revealed that Hotaru was forced to carry a burden like Naruto and Utakata, with the clan’s secret technique fused into her back.

As Naruto gets furious learning about Hotaru’s burden, she insists that it was a burden she willingly took in respect of her grandfather’s final wish to restore their clan’s glory. He offered to eliminate the danger of the kinjutsu by removing it from her body and destroying it. Hotaru initially refused it, thinking that it would make her grandfather’s efforts go in vain, but Utakata slaps her, and she was made to see that she couldn’t restore her clan with such destructive technique.

She was willing to accept this choice as a final act and offered one additional solution, to look for a guy named Shiranami, who was a tremendously talented ninja who followed En no Gyōja’s teachings and may be of great assistance. Naruto accepts and attempts to find the man.

Later, Utakata abruptly leaves, much to Hotaru’s dismay. She sets out to find him and she encounters Shiranami on her way. He sympathizes with her loneliness and understands her desire to bring their kin back. She decides to send Tonbee a letter after being convinced not to destroy the technique.

Shiranami, however, reveals his true intentions and knocks out Hotaru unconscious and takes her back to Tsuchigumo village which was already under his control by branding the locals with his fūinjutsu. He then starts the process of unsealing the clan’s technique.

Shiranami had already used a word-bind control on Hotaru when Utakata and Naruto arrived, and began gathering natural chakra to obliterate the Tsuchigumo village with everyone in it. Shiranami briefly released his control on Hotaru as he bragged about the kinjutsu’s strength, while Hotaru was devastated as she believed that he had murdered both Naruto and Utakata.

After realizing that she had betrayed Utakata, she attempted to kill herself. While Naruto chased after Shiranami when he fled after kinjutsu absorbed enough chakra than it should have, Utakata was tasked with saving her. After doing so, he agreed to be her teacher and instructed Hotaru to meet him at the location where they originally met, before parting their ways.

Later, Utakata was killed by the Six Paths of Pain while searching for Tsurugi and his troops. Hotaru laid down as a swarm of bubbles exploded over her as she laid among the flowers waiting for him, unaware about her master’s fate, she stared at the one of the bubbles in her hand.

Hotaru is projected as a determined individual, as she willingly asked for the kinjutsu to be implanted on her in order to carry her clan’s tradition. She is extremely tenacious in her pursuit of her objective, working nonstop to acquire the skills that Utakata taught her.

Hotaru is a short, fair skinned girl with dark-green eyes and long blonde hair reaching her back. She is dressed in a black obi-tied violet kimono top with white trimmings, black shinobi boots, black shorts with a shuriken holster below, and a slit black shirt with red trimmings.

Hotaru has demonstrated a natural ability for ninjutsu despite only receiving basic instruction in the technique from her grandfather and Tonbee. She was repeatedly told by Utakata to not study with him, but he gave her the order to first learn certain fundamental chakra control and skills, which she was able to succeed in a short length of time without any meaningful guidance. She also showed an affinity for water-chakra as she picked up to employ the Water Release: Wild Water Wave through Utakata’s tutoring.
