In his youth, during the second round of the Chūnin Exams, Ibiki and his teammates Hayate Gekkō and Tokara faced team Orochimaru in the Forest of Death.
Several years later, Ibiki headed a crew attempting to recover secret codes stored by Kirigakure’s Cypher Division. He persuaded Kisame Hoshigake and his subordinates but in mere moments, Kisame slaughtered his own comrades to keep their village’s intel confidential.
Ibiki was the proctor of the first round of his younger brother Idate’s Chūnin Exams. He failed Idate, believing he was unfit to be a shinobi. Ibiki later discovered that his brother had left the village and that he was assisting his sensei Aoi Rokushō in stealing the Sword of the Thunder God. Ibiki and two other Anbu members pursued them but Aoi soon brought the help of Amegakure allies to capture Ibiki and eliminate the two Anbu members who were with him.
Aoi then tormented Ibiki in order for him to read the scroll, accidentally setting fire to the building after Ibiki freed himself and his younger brother. Despite Ibiki’s efforts, the flames quickly separated the two siblings and Ibiki was compelled to return to the village alone, believing his brother had died.
Ibiki is the first round’s proctor during the Chūnin Exams, which is a difficult written test for a genin to solve. He issued a warning to Team Dosu following their attack on Kabuto Yakushi before the commencement of the exam and secretly placed two chūnin among the audience during the first part to answer questions and make other genin try to cheat off their exams.
The purpose of the test was to assess the participants’ information-gathering abilities which Naruto Uzumaki was unaware of but pretended as if he knew. Nonetheless, he passed the exam without answering a single question which piqued Ibiki’s interest.
Ibiki is seen during the invasion in Konoha, guarding the borders of the village and recounting the dark past of Orochimaru. He also greeted Jiraiya when the latter came to their aid.
Ibiki is one of the ninjas who was dispatched to the Land of Tea to retrieve an injured Sasuke Uchiha. While he is there, he meets Idate for the first time in years. Despite having minimal interaction with him, he told Idate that he no longer has cowardly eyes.
Ibiki is sent to question Tatsuji, an Amegakure shinobi who was meeting with Danzō Shimura, until Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane arrived and revealed information about Tatsuji being a double agent for Konohagakure and Amegakure.
Though Jiraiya was killed in his battle against Pain, he was able to convey back to Konoha one of the clues as an Amegakure prisoner. Ibiki led the interrogation at first, but when his methods proved ineffective, he sought the assistance of Inoichi Yamanaka.
The Animal Path led Shizune to the Intel Division, where Inoichi was probing the prisoner’s psyche during Pain’s assault on Konoha. There, Ibiki and a group of three Anbu took a stand against Pain which allowed Inoichi, Shizune and Ino to flee to the Cypher Division to finish their research.
Ibiki tried to capture and interrogate the Animal Path of Pain. When he managed to imprison it for a while, he realized that his torture methods had no effects as the Animal Path felt no pain and was more like a cold corpse. The Animal Path broke free of Ibiki’s restraints and placed a summoning seal on his stomach.
Ibiki collapsed to his knees in agony and moments later, Pain’s Giant Drill-Beaked Bird emerged from his back, severely injuring him. Katsuyu immediately attached herself to him, healed, and saved him. He fought until the Animal Path fled to avoid the destruction of the village.
Ibiki and his colleagues interrogated Karin Uzumaki about everything she knew about Sasuke Uchiha and Kabuto Yakushi after she was escorted to the village by Kakashi Hatake. He kept a straight face and strict demeanor while Karin sobbed, delivering her narrative, and seemed unfazed when she sought food before talking any further. While his other two co-workers tried to fulfill Karin’s request, Ibiki kept silent and instructed her to stop acting and start talking.
Ibiki is a strict man, who has been labeled as a sadist by Kakashi Hatake. This is compounded by his notion that pain is an efficient method of communication, which he employs anytime he performs his torture and interrogation tasks.
Even after being cruelly tortured by Aoi Rokushō, Ibiki never divulged any information to the latter, who acknowledged Ibiki’s bravery years later. Nonetheless, he admitted to his subordinates during the Konoha Crush that he was terrified of Orochimaru as a child, describing him as “inhuman, but in human form.” During his mission to retrieve Kirigakure’s secret codes, Ibiki was truly shocked when Kisame slaughtered his own teammates to protect the information.
Ibiki has revealed a more easygoing side during the Chūnin Exams. He also laughed when he realized he had passed someone who had not answered a single question on the exam.
Despite his rigorous interrogation techniques, Ibiki is revealed to be rather sensible, which was noticed when Karin made demands for specific food in return for giving up information on the Akatsuki, Kabuto and Sasuke. Furthermore, he was not easily moved by a sob story and maintained a strict attitude when interrogating someone.
He was said to like Naruto because of his energy and ability to inspire confidence, as well as his trademark pranks and sense of humor. Despite his strict demeanor, he showed concern for his younger brother Idate, telling him to escape as he fought Aoi off. He was thrilled by his brother’s level of transformation and he was also grateful to Naruto for changing his brother.
He also has a remarkable love for animals, who are usually cheerful around him.
Ibiki has a huge, imposing stature that is complemented by a rough head and a face covered in old wounds and scars. His head is always covered by his forehead protector which hides a slew of burn wounds, screw punctures and long slash marks.
His scars are a result of the physical torture he has experienced in the past and they demonstrate his ability to bear suffering without giving the enemy any information. He had a short crop of silver hair as a child.
He’s dressed in a darker variant of the Intelligence Division’s normal outfit with a black trench coat and gloves. He donned a black costume with chain-mail armor underneath, over which he wore a beige utility jacket with multiple pouches strapped to it and calf-length sandals as a genin. He wore his bandanna-style forehead protector in the same manner.
Fifteen years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Ibiki is dressed in a light-coloured trench coat with a striped shirt underneath.
Ibiki is a master of interrogation, both physical and psychological, and plays a crucial role in information extraction out of suspects and prisoners of war. He has the power to subject individuals to excruciating pain without ever resorting to physical torture.
He understands human psychology completely and by targeting a person’s psyche, he may drive control of their spirit. His interrogation skills are so renowned that when Kisame Hoshigake discovered that Ibiki was going to interrogate him and his comrades, he instantly resolved to kill all of his Cypher Division companions to prevent them from revealing any information. He is also very sharp and instantly detects deception, just as he saw through Karin’s complex story.
During his battle against Pain’s Animal Path, he is seen expertly using the Summoning Technique to create a number of torture devices, including an Iron Maiden and a Torture Chamber. These summons, ironically, are modelers after engimono statues, which are often used to bestow good fortune on temples and businesses.
Some of these summonings were also double-edged blades, with the summoner feeling the same degree of suffering as the opponent. Ibiki claims this has to do with becoming equals through pain. In the manga, his powers are mostly the same, with him being able to perform the Shrimp Tie Technique, and Summoning: Execution Chamber.
He also carries a slew of secret weapons and equipment, including a filing placed in his teeth that he can use to light combustible items and a small dagger hidden in the heel of his boot.
Ibiki is proven to have a high deal of energy and endurance, despite generally staying off the battlefield or using indirect fighting methods. Despite being bruised and still tied to a chair, he demonstrated some taijutsu talent, tripping and hurting Aoi Rokushō and then fleeing. He has also demonstrated a lot of raw strength.
Ibiki is a playable character in the following video games :

(To the Chūnin Exams candidates) “Because… in times, information is more important than life.. and on missions and on the battlefield, people risk their lives to get their hands on it.”
(To the exam candidates) “Important information in your hands.. can be a powerful weapon for your comrades and the village.”
(To the exam candidates) “The ability to be courageous and survive any hardship.. These are the abilities needed to become a chūnin captain. Those who can’t put their destinies on the line.. who cling to the uncertain future of “there’s always next year”.. and walk away from their chance.. those pieces of trash who can only make such cowardly choices do not deserve to become Chūnin!”
