The details concerning Kanabun’s early years are shrouded in mystery. Kanabun is only a part of the Naruto anime, which makes him a filler, non-canon character in the series.
Kanabun made his debut in the anime with the Past Arc: The Locus of Konoha. In the storyline, Kanabun and other members of his gang watched the brawl between Tsukado, a master swordsman, and Katazu. He then came to know that Tsukade is after Katazu’s life to avenge the death of Shikazo, who was a distant relative of his. After this, Kanabun comes up with a plan to profit off of their enmity. The next day, he brings Katazu and Tsukado face to face to make a profit for himself and his gang.
However, after Naruto Uzumaki interfered in the fight, Tsukado came to realize that Katazu did not kill Shikazo, he was just taking the blame for his brother Kageki who killed him by accident. Katazu and Tsukado amended their differences, and their enmity came to an end. However, Kanabun was not happy with this development, and he tried to force the two swordsmen to fight. To his misfortune, the two swordsmen, Mr. Ostrich and Konohagakure’s Team 7, consisting of Naruto, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno, led by Kakashi Hatake, chased Kanabun and his gang out of the town. Kanabun stated that they would be sorry for this before fleeing from the scene.
Kanabun is a greedy man who isn’t above making a profit off of others’ turmoil or misfortune. He sent his men to bet on the battle between Tsukado and Katazu to make a profit. He is also aggressive when things don’t go his way. When the brawl between the two swordsmen settled in a draw, he did not accept the result and tried to make them fight by force, sending his men to kill the two if they didn't.
Despite his tough exterior, Kanabun also showed the nature of a coward. He, along with his gang, fled the town when they found themselves losing, promising to take revenge.
Kanabun is a young man with a muscular physique, short and spiky gray hair, small dark eyes, and a patch of hair for a beard. He wears a blue kimono with a matching belt wrapped around his waist. Over the kimono, he is dressed in a multicolor robe with a filthy yellow center and a green top and bottom divided by a red wavy design, red sleeve borders with black trimmings, paired with brown pants and a pair of sandals.
Kanabun is the leader of the infamous Kanabun Gang. Based on his status, it seems he possesses note-worthy leadership skills. However, his combat skills are quite questionable as he and his gang of heavily armed men lost to two swordsmen and Team 7 quite easily. Even Condor, also known as Lord Ostrich, was able to peck Kanabun, forcing him to run away.
