Very little is known about Karai as his past is still shrouded in mystery. In the series, Karai was introduced as a Kumogakure shinobi.
Karai debuted in the anime in the Fourth Shinobi World War: Confrontation Arc. In the storyline, Karai was on a covert mission with a Kumogakure shinobi squad consisting of Nigai, Amai, the Fourth Raikage A, and himself. While on the mission, they stole a scroll from the Sugi Village containing a kinjutsu, a forbidden jutsu of the village.
To retrieve the scroll, the residents of the village hired a mercenary group known as the Nokizaru Group. Karai and his comrades were successful in fleeing from the mercenary group; however, before they could realize it, they had microscopically implanted an exploding insect into their bodies. The mercenary group then criticized the Raikage. This infuriated Nigai, and he attacked the mercenary group head-on.
To their surprise, Nigai exploded before he could get close to his target. Following this, Karai tried to attack them but stepped back before meeting the same fate as Nigai. Amai, the medical ninja of their squad, tried to heal Karai, but he was not skilled enough to do so.
To save their comrade, the Kumogakure shinobi squad reached out to Tsunade Senju, the Slug Princess. However, she refused at first, but later, Shizune, Tsunade’s apprentice, surgically removed the insect from Karai’s body with Amai’s assistance.
Karai is a proud Kumogakure shinobi and is loyal to the Raikage. Even though his life was in imminent danger, he refused to take aid from anyone outside the village. He believed that the Raikage’s pride would be tarnished if he asked for help from anyone outside the village, which in his opinion, is worth more than his life.
Karai refused to address Tsunade with the honorific ‘-sama (Lady in English)’ and reprimanded Amai for doing so as she was from a different village.
Karai is a young man with a dark skin tone. He has dark eyes and short and spikey blonde hair that has a streak of bright orange color on the left side. He is dressed in the standard attire of a Kumogakure shinobi.
That consists of a dark shirt with torn sleeves and a high, upturned collar that he wears zipped down the midway, a pair of matching pants, and a pair of sandals. He also wore a Kumogakure forehead protector with a white band.
Karai is a shinobi of Kumogakure, capable enough to be selected in the same squad as the Raikage. He possesses Lightning Release chakra and is skilled in Lightning Strike, also known as Lightning Style: Lightning Strike in the English anime.
Karai is the Japanese word for “spicy.”
