Kui Dotonbori and his son go to different villages to participate in food-eating competitions. In the past, Kui competed against Choji Akimichi quite a few times and lost.
Kui and his son, Daore, participate in Konohagakure's yearly food-eating contest. Only parent-and-child teams can compete this time, because it's Parent and Child Day. Kui doesn't think any other contestants are a challenge because he sees them as having small bodies and appetites. The only exception is Choji Akimichi, whom Kui eagerly wants to compete against again. However, when Choji doesn't remember meeting Kūi before, Kui feels insulted and vows to defeat him.
Kui and Daore make it to the final round along with two other parent-child teams. Shikamaru and Shikadai Nara get disqualified for vomiting, Daore faints from eating too much, and Choji passes out because he chokes on some lettuce from a previous round. Kui mocks them all for being weak. Thinking he's guaranteed to win, Kui starts eating the final round's food, which are dumplings from Ankorodo. However, due to interference from the owner of Ankorodo, the dumplings make Kui vomit. Ultimately, Choji and his daughter, Chocho Akimichi, are declared the winners.
In the anime version, Kui and his son are actually working with the owner of Ankorodo, who rigged the competition in favor of Dotonbori. She ensured their Lightning Burgers weren't spicy, and their dumpling bowls were shallower than the Akimichi's. However, Boruto Uzumaki figures out the cheating and switches the rigged dumpling bowls with regular ones. When the Ankorodo owner is exposed for cheating, Kui and the others are scolded by Shikamaru Nara.
In a later event called the Time Slip Arc, Kui and his son go to a flea market in Konohagakure to find new clothes. Ironically, they find what they need from their rivals, Choji and Chocho. Although Kui and Daore are upset that the Akimichis don’t recognize them, they still decide to buy from Choji and his daughter.
Kui is a competitive and proud person who loves participating in food competitions. He sees Choji Akimichi as his rival and is determined to defeat him. Kui tends to underestimate other competitors and enjoys mocking those he considers weak. However, he can also be easily insulted and takes his losses personally. Despite his competitive nature, Kui can appreciate a good opportunity when he finds one, as seen when he buys clothes from his rivals, Choji and Chocho, at a flea market.
Kui Dotonbori is a chubby and tall person with a thick jaw beard and some bifurcated beard lines. He wears a red and blue sleeveless T-shirt and gray shorts. He has three stripes of hair on his head.
Kui Dotonbori has the ability to eat a lot, much more than normal human beings.
