Onoki in Naruto

Onoki was the Third Tsuchikage and played one of the most important roles in The Fourth Shinobi War. He was also a long-running Tsuchikage for the Iwagakure (Village Hidden in the Stones).

He is one of the main characters in the Naruto anime series and manga that is written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. Onoki is also one of the supporting characters in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, a Japanese manga series that is written by Ukyo Kodachi and Masashi Kishimoto and illustrated by Mikio Ikemoto.

Onoki was also one of the strongest characters in Naruto, and his Particle style is way more powerful than most other Jutsu used in the Naruto series.

Life of Onoki

Onoki, in childhood, was given the duty to clean the village's Stone Monument. At first, he used to make fun of the Stone because it was not a fancy or huge Monument like other villages had. The First Tsuchikage then told Onoki that while he had a strong will, he would lose it if he didn't persevere in the face of difficulties.

When he was a young man, Onoki trained under the Second Tsuchikage, Mu, who taught him the skills for Dust Release. Onoki was the last surviving Kage to engage in combat with Madara Uchiha before Madara's murder. On one occasion, Madara approached them and said that despite their villages' alliance, Konoha was to remain the dominant one, and Iwagakure was to obey any orders that Konohagakure gave.

Onoki was afraid of Madara because of his strength, so he was taken aback when it turned out to be him in disguise. He had also run into the Second Mizukage, the rival of his mentor, and was frequently teased by him.

The Third Tsuchikage

Onoki eventually took over for Mu as the Tsuchikage. In the anime, he suffered the difficulties of the Third Shinobi World War while in power and witnessed numerous of his subjects perished in combat. Finally, the Third Hokage personally offered a peace treaty from Konohagakure.

Onoki seriously contemplated signing the pact even though the Iwa council opposed it, in order to put an end to the slaughter. He eventually got to know Deidara and learned about his philosophy and combat technique.

However, he claims to have known and talked with the Fourth Raikage since childhood. In a later episode of the anime, Konohagakure and Sunagakure invited Onoki to participate in an unexpected Chunin Exams they would be organizing together.

Onoki swiftly declined the offer, merely telling the hosts that his village was too busy, because he arrogantly assumed that this was an attempt by the two villages to assess Iwagakure's strength for a forthcoming battle more accurately.

Five Kage Summit

The residents of Iwagakure wanted Onoki to go to the Kage summit and prove to the other Kages how powerful he was. Still, his bodyguards Akatsuchi and Kurotsuchi were less pleased. He needed to be carried to the meeting because he had hip pain. Onoki gave Akatsuchi a history lesson on the samurai when they got to the Land of Iron.

Onoki stated his worry that Akatsuki may easily capture the Jinchuriki at the start of the Summit, calling it an embarrassment. Onoki defended Iwagakure's conduct when the Fourth Raikage made fun of him for using Akatsuki in the past and instead accused Kumogakure of building up its arsenal during times of peace. After that, Mifune proposed that the five Kage band together to fight Akatsuki and named Danzo as the group's leader. The suggestion angered Onoki, but Mifune claimed he wasn't trustworthy since he was too elderly and had used Akatsuki too much.

The Raikage headed off to confront Sasuke Uchiha once the Kage were informed of his location, and Onoki remarked that the Raikage was still as careless as a child. He had earlier rejected Gaara's proposals because he was too young, but now, while waiting for the Raikage's return, he offered to give the Fifth Kazekage advice on how to be a good Kage. The Kazekage just questioned his lack of faith. Soon after, Sasuke arrived at their location, but Onoki opted to let the Fifth Mizukage handle him.

When the Mizukage's technique had brought Sasuke dangerously close to death, Black Zetsu activated the Spore Technique, causing many clones to begin growing and draining their attachments' chakra in the process. The clones who fall off of Onoki are frozen by his Earth Release: Added-Weight Rock Technique, which causes a massive crater to develop.

Then, Onoki made the decision to step in because it appeared that Mei was having a problem. He used the Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World Technique to assault Sasuke. He then turned his attention to Karin, who was in shock. The Fourth Raikage then shows up and asks where Sasuke is. In response, Onoki claims that he has turned Sasuke to dust. The Raikage, who said he intended to do that, is angered by this. Tobi arrives out of nowhere carrying Sasuke.

He told the Kage about his Eye of the Moon Plan after teleporting Karin and Sasuke into his pocket universe. Tobi finished by asking Onoki and the other Kage to give him the two remaining Jinchuriki, but they both refused. Tobi then declared the start of the Fourth Shinobi World War.

In response to the declaration of war, Onoki, Gaara, Mifune, Mei, and the Raikage decided to band together to fight Tobi and the Akatsuki. Onoki agreed to approach Kakashi Hatake in Konohagakure to ask for help because the group did not trust the Hokage.

Onoki recommended they use their two remaining Jinchuriki to their advantage in the upcoming fights, but the other Kage disapproved, thinking that would make them too easy to be caught. The Raikage asked Onoki to provide all the information he knew about Madara because he had once battled him after it was decided that he would command the Shinobi alliance.

At the end of the discussion, Onoki shocked his army troops by choosing not to kill the Jinchuriki. He did not clarify when asked why, just saying that he remembered who he was "before he became a hard-headed old man," referring to how Gaara had talked down on him about "losing himself."

He and his bodyguards are informed that the Earth Daimyo has given the alliance his blessing when they return to Iwagakure. While Kurotsuchi insults her grandfather by comparing him with Madara in age, Akatsuchi remarks on the instant approval.

He continued by attacking the young people's ignorance. Akatsuchi responds by repeating what Gaara said. Later, Onoki acknowledges that he is eager to see what Gaara is capable of, using Gaara as a symbol of the future generation of shinobi.

Fourth Shinobi World War

Onoki travels to Kumogakure to discuss with the other Alliance leaders in order to prepare for the upcoming battle with Akatsuki. Onoki suggests that the Fifth Hokage retire and transfer her authority to a younger person because she is still recovering from a lengthy coma. He is called a hypocrite by her. The Hokage disagrees when the more important topic of where to keep the Jinchuriki is brought up. While claiming that he advocated against them at the summit, Onoki utilizes the same reasons the other three Kage made to convince her that it's for the best.

Onoki offers to go to the island to protect against any Akatsuki attacks after they learn that the location of the Jinchuriki on the Island Turtle has been discovered by those evil creatures. Gaara suggests that he go instead as Onoki departs since he breaks his hip again. Nevertheless, Onoki flies to the island alongside Akatsuchi and Kurotsuchi.

Onoki encounters Reincarnated Deidara and Kabuto

They come upon Kabuto Yakushi and the reborn Deidara riding a massive clay owl as they get closer to the island. Attacking them, Onoki discovers that they are Clay Clones that would shortly go off. The real Onoki doesn't waste any time making fun of Deidara for being killed by Sasuke because the Onoki that attacked them was one of Akatsuchi's rock clones.

Onoki chases Deidara and Kabuto as they retreat to the island. He is about to use one of his dust attacks to attack them both when Akatsuchi stops him, warning him that any attack he makes will likely wipe out the island. To determine whether Onoki's dust is superior to Deidara's Explosion Release, Deidara is drawn away from the island. Before their battle can begin, a coffin appears and takes Deidara. When Onoki returns to the island, he discovers that Kabuto managed to escape while holding Yamato hostage.

Onoki takes the island to the far coast of the Land of Lightning while grumbling about the strain it puts on his back out of fear of what Akatsuki would do now that they knew where the island was. He receives the Allied forehead protector created while he is away as he returns to headquarters.

Onoki takes the island to the far coast of the Land of Lightning while grumbling about the strain it puts on his back out of fear of what Akatsuki would do now that they know where the island is. He receives the Allied forehead protector created while he is away as he returns to headquarters.

Onoki fights his Mentor, the Second Tsuchikage Mu

Onoki continues to consult with the Hokage and Raikage at the headquarters when necessary. Onoki is asked to lend support when Gaara's Fourth Division reports coming into touch with a reborn Mu because headquarters thinks that only a dust-user could destroy another dust-user. When he gets to the Fourth Division's base, he informs Gaara that he was there to atone for his past mistakes and reclaim the moral principles he abandoned.

Onoki informs Gaara that they can no longer escape and should start attacking the enemy from a distance to watch how they react until the sun comes out on the second day of the fight. Gaara sends a huge sandstorm at the Kage, but the Fourth Kazekage stops it. Gaara's sand then imprisons the Kage as Onoki prepares to attack, but Mu manages to flee and block the attack. The area is destroyed when their Dust Release techniques clash. Then, Onoki says that Mu's strength had not diminished at all.

Gaara is the Regimental Commander of the Allied Shinobi Force, and all the Kage recognize his authority, Onoki informs the Fourth Kazekage. Mu can therefore verify the Shinobi's Alliance by doing so.

Mu then tells Onoki that Iwagakure's dominance can be secured by fully utilizing the post-war scenario. Mu is shocked when Onoki assures him that he won't be doing that this time. As the action picks back up, Onoki pursues Mu as he flees to dodge Gaara's move.

As the hunt continues and both men appear to be fighting again, Mu warns Onoki that he was getting old and urges him to summon Gaara before he too passes away. Onoki had become noticeably exhausted by this point. He makes some clones, warning Mu not to underestimate him just yet.

Gaara shows up during their battle and tries to warn Onoki of Mu's strike from behind, but she is unable to block it, and as a result, Onoki appears to throw his back out. Gaara tries to help him, but Mu gets ready to use his Dust Release on them.

Mu avoids a surprise attack from Naruto using his Planetary Rasengan, but Onoki recovers in time to inform him that Mu is a sensor. Gaara and Naruto work well together to hit Mu, and Onoki quickly came in to attack him with his Earth Release: Added-Weight Rock Technique, turning Mu to stone.

Onoki responds that he had lived long enough, and it was time for a change as Mu informs Onoki that for someone who hated other communities, he worked well with them as Gaara seals him with sand. When Onoki realizes that he didn’t know who he was, he informs Naruto that he is the Tsuchikage and orders him to explain to them why he was on the battlefield.

Onoki stays suspended over the battlefield and attempts to assault the Giant Clam after Gaara's sand recognizes the true Giant Clam, after they go to another battlefield to face the Second Mizukage. However, Onoki cannot complete the technique due to his low chakra levels. He then uses the Earth Release: Fist Rock Technique to assault the clam close up, but the blow is barely powerful enough to lift the surrounding Genjutsu.

Onoki and Gaara seal the Second Mizukage

Onoki responds to the Second's criticism that he was too old by telling him that he is no longer the foolish teenager he once was. He then uses the Earth Release: Ultra-Added-Weight Rock Technique to make his rock fist even heavier. The Giant Clam appears to be killed by this strike, but Onoki injures his back in the process. The Second seizes this chance and shoots Onoki with his Water Gun Technique.

However, it turns out that the Onoki who was shot was actually a sand clone that Gaara made of Onoki and switched with at the last second. As the Second Mizukage is being sealed, Onoki declares that the Alliance has won. However, this joy is cut short when the Second uses his Steaming Danger Tyranny technique to escape Gaara's Desert Layered Imperial Funeral. Onoki tells them that this is a technique that not even Mu understands, as she watches in terror.

He complains about the fact that he can't move because of his back after explaining how the strategy worked. Onoki challenges the Second Mizukage about his motivations when he explains that he wasn't going to teach them how to resist his technique in the hopes that this would aid them in another way. The Second then informs him that they had little chance of overthrowing the opposition leader if they failed to defeat him, who was already dead. It is later discovered that the Second Tsuchikage has broken the seal.

Onoki fights Madara Uchiha

Since the masked man has previously utilized Akatsuki, Temari asks Onoki if he has any thoughts as to who the man with the mask might be. In response, Onoki says he doesn't know, but whomever the opponent is, they must stop him. Madara dodges Gaara's assault and moves to the ground below. Onoki cautions the others not to gaze straight into Madara's eyes when he launches his assault on the Fourth Division. Onoki questions if Mu can employ Dust Release techniques while in a split state after observing Mu struggle to trigger one.

He instructs the sensors to monitor Mu. After that, Onoki focuses on Madara and lifts the earth beneath him as one of Naruto's shadow clones uses an Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan to attack Madara.

Gaara is able to move the sand more easily as Onoki makes the entire region light. Naruto and Gaara launch their attack. When Madara reveals his Rinnegan, their assault fails. To Onoki's terror, Madara retreats to the top of a rock formation and calls forth a meteorite. Onoki urges them not to give up as the meteorites hurtle toward them. In an effort to stop it, he employs his Earth Release: Ultralight-Weight Rock Technique while flying through the air.

He manages to stop the meteorite with the help of Gaara and his sand, despite suffering terrible back injuries in the process. Onoki is sent to the ground when Madara calls down a second one that hits the first one. Onoki is discovered alive and seriously injured in the aftermath. Later, as Naruto prepares to combat Madara's Wood Release Secret Technique: Nativity of a World of Trees, he stands by and instructs Naruto's clone, who is in danger of dissolving at any moment, to leave the remainder to them. He then strongly claims that Madara was the only opponent deserving of his attention and that it was time for him to pick up the values he had long since left.

Onoki expresses his intention to take on Madara. Madara says he wants to test out more of his strategies, but doubts Onoki will be able to defend himself. In the past, Madara had betrayed Iwagakure, as Onoki recalls.

Onoki discusses how the last three world wars were brought about by shinobi battling each other. He claims that he can envision a better future since he is aware of the pain of the past. Mu asks Kabuto if the fourth war is the better course of action. According to Onoki, the current conflict is unusual since everyone is fighting alongside one another. Madara advises that the world can sleep soundly in the limitless Tsukuyomi and that there is no use in trying to change it any further.

Other Kages arrive to fight Madara

Onoki says that Madara was to blame for his loss of direction and that it is now time to go back on track. He says that it is Madara who is going to sleep. Onoki says he will defeat Madara for himself and the future, and consents to let the young shinobi assist him. Tsunade and A come to stop Madara and Mu's onslaught barely in time. Soon after, Mei appears using the Flying Thunder God Technique. Onoki beams and remarks that having experience is handy because he never imagined witnessing the five Kage engage in combat.

As Tsunade works quickly to treat him, Onoki expresses gratitude. While Tsunade completes healing him and Gaara, A and Mei wait. Onoki informs Naruto that the fight is not just about protecting him anymore but also about protecting everyone, as Naruto's clone begs Tsunade to heal him as well. Onoki creates a rock golem to shield them when Madara attacks and Gaara places his Shield of Sand on top of it to resist the attack further. Onoki creates a strategy and enlists A and Mei's assistance.

Onoki slows the Raikage down as they approach Madara to increase his attack power, allowing him to knock Madara and his Susanoo away. At the same time, Mei blocks Madara's view, and Onoki lightens A to make him faster. Then, Onoki explains to Naruto's clone why he joined the allied troops and discusses the animosity toward the ninja community. He tells him that while the real Naruto battles the imposter, the Kage will take care of the genuine Madara. He and the other Kage members leave Naruto's clone with the word "win" before he scatters.

Onoki builds a massive rock golem as the fight continues, but Madara's Wood Release: Advent of a World of Flowering Trees method decimates it. The Kage fall unconscious after using the method, despite their best efforts to avoid breathing in the pollen it produces. Onoki summons enormous strength, and utilizing the conical variation of his Dust Release technique, decimates the trees after recalling his conversation with the First Tsuchikage. The First Hokage's face, created from Madara's DNA, protrudes from her bare chest as the other Kage begin to come to.

As Tsunade joins the team, Onoki, who is helping A, helps Tsunade in a dual assault on Madara to destroy his Susanoo. A uses the Lightning Oppression Horizontal Chop method to attack, and Onoki adds weight to his attacks to increase their power. When Tsunade is impaled by Madara's Susanoo, who explains that the Madara they sealed was a wood clone, he and the other Kage are shocked. The Kage, who thought Tsunade was dead, are shocked to see her make a surprise assault on Madara while escaping the deadly attack.

Madara claims that he allowed that attack to hit him on purpose in order to expose Hashirama's face inside his chest. Onoki watches in astonishment as Madara asks the five Kage whether or not they intended the clones to use Susanoo after creating numerous wood clones to battle each Kage.

Onoki realized that Madara had simply been playing with him and Mu after recalling his earlier encounter. Even after receiving a single blow from one of Susanoo's swords, Onoki and the other Kage stood up again to face Madara, refusing to yield to his intimidation. Onoki watched in disbelief as Madara's Susanoo vanished and a sort of light engulfed him as he prepared to attack the Kage again.

Onoki declared that it didn't matter who defeated Kabuto, whoever it was was a hero who had defended the shinobi world, as the other Kage questioned whether the technique that had brought Madara to this world had been canceled.

Onoki informed Tsunade of Madara's last desperate attempt to harm them, and he watched in horror as Tsunade saved the Kage before her method failed due to her chakra supply running low. He hurried to rescue her, startled when Tsunade seemed to avoid Madara's blow, wondering how she managed it when she should have completely lost consciousness.

Then, when Madara disclosed that he cut links to the agreement with Kabuto and his soul, enabling him to act in his own free will, he showed shock. Onoki and the other Kage tried to prevent Madara from leaving their battleground, but they were finally beaten and suffered serious injuries.

Later, Orochimaru and Karin came to the rescue of all the kages and were able to make it back to the battlefield to help the Allied Shinobi Force. The latter was fighting against Madara and Obito. But then, Madara used the Infinite Tsukuyomi Onoki, and all other shinobi except Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake, and Sakura Haruno, fall under the Infinite Tsukuyomi Genjutsu.

Onoki in Boruto: The Next Generation

Onoki retired as Tsuchikage and gave his granddaughter the title. In the anime, Iwagakure was attacked by a missing-nine ten years after the Fourth Great Shinobi World War, which resulted in numerous young casualties, including his grandson Kozuchi. Shortly after, Onoki discovered a Jutsu as an alternative to shinobi protecting his town, creating the creatures to perform the battle so humans would remain safe and unharmed.

This was done because he did not want to watch innocent people die again. When he disclosed his creations to Kurotsuchi and other Iwagakure shinobi, a golem tried to attack him, but his granddaughter protected him and disapproved of his plan.

He continued his studies alone, refusing to accept his granddaughter's choice until a scientist came up to him and offered him some White Zetsu skeletal bones to speed up his work. Onoki oversaw the creation of Ku and four other fabrications that would help his clone carry out his mission using the materials and cloning technology still in its infancy.

Akuta was also constructed at this time by Onoki to serve as the fabrications' leader. Later, when Onoki met Boruto, they both had a great bond, and Boruto respected him very much because Onoki taught Boruto about the will of fire.

The shinobi community was seriously affected by Onoki's passing. The younger generation was motivated by it to overcome hardship. The Five Kage and several Iwagakure residents attended his funeral. However, the genin who assisted in bringing down the Fabrications were sent back to Konohagakure for their unauthorized departure, including Boruto, who was disappointed he couldn't make it to the funeral. The official story was that Onoki died of health-related reasons.

Victor was given Onoki's study on Fabrications, and he exploited it through his business to forward his investigation into the God Tree. Hanabi Hyuga indicated that Onoki was being used unintentionally by the Doctor to obtain research data. Still, Kurotsuchi had initially been concerned that Onoki might also have been a member of Kara after learning that the Iwagakure Doctor was alive and a member of the group.

Onoki’s Personality

Onoki was a highly arrogant, stubborn, and boastful person. Despite his advanced age, he refused to step down as Tsuchikage and select a replacement, arguing that he was still powerful enough to control the town. He was somewhat hypocritical as he advised Tsunade to resign as Hokage once she awoke from her coma, pointing out that she could be too old. He was referred to as a "stubborn old man" by Kurotsuchi.

He has extremely little regard for others who are younger than him because of his arrogance, as evidenced by the multiple times he verbally insulted Gaara and disparaged his alleged lack of political acumen.

Onoki said that his actions directly resulted from his encounter(s) with Madara in his childhood and that he had lost sight of who he was. Despite this, he kept an open mind and felt like himself again after seeing Gaara's attitude. He greatly regarded Gaara's talent and authority as a Kage, as well as his wisdom despite his youth.

When the Fourth Division and later the other Kage were driven to face Madara without fear despite his displays of tremendous might, Onoki showed himself to be a very determined, charismatic, and inspirational commander. He also inspired his fellow soldiers to do the same. Even though he was almost out of chakra, he went so far as to try to stop Madara from following Naruto and Kurama.

Onoki has the Will of Fire, and he was someone who lived up to that because he kept on doing things for his village, and even when he could not walk, he still educated Boruto and other young shinobi.

Onoki’s Appearance

Onoki, at his young age, had short brown hair and thick brown eyebrows. He had big eyes and a big nose, but he was a well-built, strong muscular teenage boy.

Onoki used to wear a green t-shirt and black trousers when he was used to cleaning the Hidden Stone Monument. Later, when he became Genin and went with the Mu to talk to Madara, he wore the usual Iwagakure shinobi outfit.

Onoki had long, white hair done in a traditional chonmage cut with the back of it wrapped with a yellow ribbon into a topknot on the lower half of his head. The top was completely bald. Onoki was dressed in a split-apart green coat with four pieces, yellow trim, and a red collar. He was dressed in the traditional Iwagakure attire, which included mesh armor and a light green flak jacket. But after removing both sleeves from his shirt, he left a single lapel on his right side and wore the Ninja sandals.

After leaving his position as Tsuchikage, Onoki's hairline started to recede even further, and his advancing age was evident in the shape of liver spots and additional wrinkles. In addition, he had a lengthier beard, mustache, and heavy-lidded eyes.

Onoki’s Abilities

Onoki was one of the strongest characters in the Naruto series. Despite being 80 years old, he acted as Tsuchikage in the Fourth Shinobi War. He was recognized as a legendary shinobi since Onoki was the primary threat to the Allied Shinobi Forces and the hardest to defeat. At his peak, he was capable of eliminating 25 of Madara's Susanoo-clad wood clones.

Onoki’s Dust Release (Particle Style) was one of the strongest ninjutsu, which he used by combining Wind, Lighting, and Yang release, and with this Jutsu, he could turn anything to dust instantly.

Onoki is a Kekkei Tota user, and he can also fly, which is very rare in the shinobi world. He can make anything lighter with Light Blounder Technique.
