Sazanka used to be a top student under the legendary Samurai Mifune. He became close friends with Tsubaki Kurogane while they were both learning from Mifune. They trained together often and even entered a tournament with the prize of inheriting Mifune's Kurosawa sword after he retired. Sazanka really wanted to win to prove himself.
In the final match of the tournament, Sazanka faced Tsubaki. He had the upper hand for most of the fight, but right at the end, Tsubaki found an opening and defeated him. This made Sazanka very angry, and he tried to take the sword by force, even killing his fellow students who tried to stop him, except for Tsubaki.
Because of this, he became a wanted criminal in the Land of Iron, and they sent people to capture him, but he managed to escape and became a hired mercenary. He worked for bandits and attacked merchants, causing trouble in the Land of Fire. This drew the attention of Konoha, and they sent Team 15 to investigate.
Tsubaki, who knew a samurai was involved, recognized Sazanka's work on the bamboo where he attacked. Team 15 disguised themselves as merchants to trap him, but Sazanka attacked them and hurt Tsubaki. They had to retreat, but they clashed again later. Sazanka appreciated the chance to fight his only remaining fellow disciple.
As time passed, Tsubaki grew stronger with her friends, and in their final battle, she had to defeat Sazanka. She regretted it, but Sazanka acknowledged her as a strong samurai before he passed away.
Sazanka had a strong and competitive personality. He was determined to prove himself and became angry when he lost. He even became a criminal and a mercenary because of his desire for a special sword.
Despite his negative actions, he respected strength in others, like Tsubaki, and acknowledged her as a strong warrior before he died.
Sazanka wore baggy black pants, a torn-sleeveless purple gi, and white bandages on his wrists and ankles. He wore a brown fur pelt around his waist, reaching his knees, and samurai sandals. He tied his hair in a high ponytail with bangs covering one side of his face.
Originally, he was slender, had soft hair framing both sides of his face, and was clean-shaven. But as he became a mercenary, his hair became messy, and he grew noticeable sideburns and chin stubble. He also became more muscular.
Sazanka carried a katana with a red-wrapped hilt and a bronze circular tsuba with a five-point petal design. The katana had a black sheath. He had medium-length purple hair and purple eyes.
Sazanka was skilled in fighting. He could use a katana, a type of Japanese sword, very well. He was strong and could overpower his opponents. He also had good agility and could move quickly in battles.
