Not much is known about the founding of the Shangri-la Village. In Akatsuki Hiden: Evil Flowers in Full Bloom, it is stated that the people with bounties on their heads who wanted to live their lives without being concerned about being chased by bounty hunters found refuge in Shangri-La. Shangri-la was built in a cave on the side of a mountain and had no pathways leading to the village, concealing it from the outside world.
The citizens of Shangri-la used the Transformation Technique to alter their appearance and kept anything about their past to themselves to conceal their identity. A tree was planted in the center of the cave to support the weight of the mountain as the village's buildings were carved directly out of the mountain.
The inhabitants used a natural aroma produced by a nearby river as a channel for genjutsu, making Shangri-la invisible to anyone who was influenced by it. A number of villagers had to continuously weave the hand seals required to preserve the genjutsu because it was rather complicated.
Very little is known about the history of Shangri-la Village. At some point, Kakuzu and Hidan, members of the infamous criminal organization, Akatsuki, were successful in locating Shangri-la. Kakuzu was a bounty hunter and was looking to claim the bounties placed upon the heads of the residents of Shangri-la.
Ameyuki, a resident of Shangri-la, led Kakuzu and Hidan to the village who then annihilated the residents of the village to claim their bounties. Later, Ameyuki used his Mud Release: Landslide to collapse the mountain upon the village, destroying the village and killing every citizen. Ameyuki destroyed Shangri-la and killed everyone to offer them as sacrifices to Lord Jashin in order to acquire immortality.
