Shishio and her teammates cleared the first phase of the Chunin exams in Konohagakure. The next mission was to reach Sunagakure, but only the first 30 teams who reached Sunagakure would advance to the next stage. Shishio and his team qualified for the round 2.

The next day, Timari instructed all participants that the second phase would be held at Demon Desert, and teams were given either a Heaven Scroll or an Earth Scroll before entering the desert. They then had three days for the entire team to reach the building in the center of the desert, with one of each scroll in their possession.

While searching for a scroll, they saw a Suna-nin being poisoned. Shishio and his teammate Ameno healed the Suna-nin, and in return, when the Suna-nin offered their scroll, they rejected it, saying it was her duty to heal them as a medical-nin.

Later on the same day, when Shishio uses his sensing seal technique, they intercept Sakura, Choji, and Ino. At first, they told them if they gave them the scroll, they would let them pass, but the Konoha shinobi refused, which led to a fight.

Shishio countered Ino Yamanaka's mind transfer technique, and when Choji got the upper hand against Soji (Suna), Shishio's team used chakra to hide from their opponents, but Ino's sensing abilities helped her team find them.

Ultimately, the Shishio team lost, but there were no hard feelings. They offered their scroll to the winners but declined since they already had enough scrolls. They all agreed to meet again in the third exam.

However, the Chunin Exams were cut short before the finals due to controversy in the second exam. Gaara decided that reports on each participant would be sent to their respective village leaders to determine if they should be promoted.

Shishio is overconfident, but after losing to the Konoha Shinobi, he accepts that he is not someone who is strongest.

Shishio has long, dark violet hair that falls over his face in three sections and keeps a short ponytail. His eyes are slanted and brown, and he has bony cheeks. For clothes, he wears a blue scarf, a light green shirt, dark green pants, and a dark blue headband with the symbol of Suna.

Shishio, as a sensor-type ninja, has some special skills. He can put a sensing seal on the ground that works like a radar, helping him see people nearby over a wide area. Shishio can also make barriers that mess up an opponent's ability to sense things.

He's good at controlling sand. He can make sand creatures like lions and make himself and his friends invisible using the sand. Here are some of the sand techniques he uses:

• Blinding Wide Sand Formation: Noise - This makes a lot of sand and noise to confuse the enemy.

• Polarised Sand Formation: Hot Sand Camouflage - With this, he can hide using hot sand.

• Sand Formation: Shisa is probably a sand skill for a specific purpose.

• Sensing Hexagram Seal - He uses a seal for sensing things, like a special mark.
