Suigetsu was born in Kirigakure and was renowned alongside his brother, Mangetsu, to be the embodiment of the demon Zabuza Momochi. He and Mangetsu wanted to be the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. This serves as their drive to complete grueling missions day by day.
While Mangetsu eventually became one of the Seven, Suigetsu’s motivation was shattered by his brother’s untimely demise and he changed his ambition to “collecting all the swords”, to retrieve all seven swords passed down by the swordsmen, so that he would rebuild the group and become its leader.
His goal was put on hold after being caught and experimented on by Orochimaru and Kabuto Yakushi. Kabuto was able to recreate Suigetsu’s unique secret power to liquefy himself at will through his studies. He faced Jūgo at some point in the past.
The teenage Uchiha sent a vial for Suigetsu’s research roughly two years after Sasuke joined Orochimaru. Suigetsu requested Sasuke to release the young Uchiha after seeing him, but Sasuke merely answered that he needed to prove his might. Suigetsu noted that one of the medical-nin was in a daze as they arrived to begin their testing (unaware he was being controlled by Sasuke’s Sharingan).
Suigetsu was eventually freed from the base after the medical-nin opened his room. Soon after, he was being hunted by Sasuke and Karin. He was able to repel the couple by using his various water powers. Taking Sasuke’s sword and admiring its design, he attacked Karin, only to be caught off guard and immobilized by her chakra chain which allowed Karin to return him to the base.
After defeating Orochimaru, Sasuke went into one of Orochimaru’s many labs and rescued Suigetsu, who was imprisoned within a holding tube. He threatened Sasuke and stated that he owed nothing to him for dealing with Orochimaru, because there were many others who would have done it, and Sasuke was able to only because he was in close proximity with him.
Nevertheless, Suigetsu joined him and hoped to face Kisame to take Samehada for himself. He accompanied Sasuke to the Land of Waves to retrieve Zabuza’s Kubikiribōchō from his grave after they had left. Upon reaching Zabuza’s grave, they found out that the sword was already taken by Tenzen Daikoku, a politician and a crime boss. Suigetsu and Sasuke broke into Tenzen’s castle, causing havoc, and ultimately retrieved the Kubikiribōchō.
After retrieving Kubikiribōchō, he and Sasuke traveled to the base where Karin lived, where Suigetsu was told to free all the captives. He ordered the prisoners to spread the message that Sasuke had killed Orochimaru, before releasing them. His motives were unclear because he was not forced to say these things by Sasuke.
They went to meet with Jūgo after Karin agreed to join them. They fought their way through an army of people branded with Cursed Seals to get to Jūgo. They were ordered not to murder any of them while subduing them. Suigetsu sought to murder Jūgo, who immediately attacked them when he came across them. Sasuke intervened and threatened to kill them both if they didn’t stop fighting. Jūgo eventually calmed down and Sasuke revealed their purpose, the name of their new team : “Hebi”, and their mission to find Itachi Uchiha.
Soon after, the squad broke up to search for information on Itachi’s whereabouts. Suigetsu was led to a bank where Akatsuki member Kakuzu’s banker Ginji was. He was pulled to the location of Sasuke’s struggle with Deidara, where he has used a special seal to summon Manda and had used the snake to flee the explosion, after seeing Deidara’s huge suicide bomb explode. However, it was too late and Manda died, prompting Suigetsu to tell Sasuke that he should treat animals better.
Sasuke discovered Itachi in an Akatsuki hideout as they continued their journey. Itachi’s clone led Sasuke to a Uchiha hideout. On their way there, the party met Kisame, who told them that Sasuke had to go alone. Suigetsu left Hebi behind and challenged Kisame to a fight, while Sasuke finally made Itachi’s death a reality. Zetsu later confessed that he intervened in the fight, saving both Suigetsu and Kisame.
Hebi, now known as “Taka”, started working with the Akatsuki, and was assigned a mission to capture the Eight Tails. They headed to Kumogakure and encountered Killer B, the Eight-Tails’ jinchūriki. Suigetsu was the first to assault him but got quickly disarmed. Both Jūgo and Sasuke’s separate attempts to subdue Killer B failed, and Sasuke would have died had Suigetsu not interfered to save him from a jinchūriki killing blow. Killer B’s electric blast, on the other hand, overpowered Suigetsu, cleaving a significant tear in his blade, which would have torn in half had Sasuke not nullified the attack in time.
Suigetsu, Jūgo and Sasuke attacked Killer B again after Karin healed Sasuke, but to no avail. Suigetsu was able to immobilize Killer B at one point, allowing Sasuke to execute a lightning strike. Unfortunately, in order to keep Killer B under control, Suigetsu intentionally suffered Sasuke’s lightning technique as well, taking significant damage.
After severely injuring Sasuke, Killer B transforms into his tailed beast form to deal with the remainder of the party. Suigetsu, who had been hurled into the sea earlier, reappeared and used the body of water to save his teammates from a crushing hit. He valiantly advised his weakened team members to flee, despite the fact that he was somewhat amused that he was risking his life for them. When Killer B attempted to use a Tailed Beast Ball on the squad, Suigetsu acted as a shield, protecting his teammates.
Despite being rendered comatose, Suigetsu managed to buy Jūgo the time he needed to revive Sasuke. Sasuke was able to turn the tide by releasing Amaterasu on the Eight-Tails, at last capturing the Eight-Tails jinchūriki. Jūgo carried Suigetsu away once the combat ended. Suigetsu recovered in a tank of water as Taka recovered. He raged at Karin for leaving his sword behind, but later he recovered it.
Taka headed out for Konoha after they recovered. Tobi intervened with them along the way and informed them of Konoha’s destruction and their failure to capture the Eight-Tails. He convinced Sasuke to accompany him to the Kage summit in order to assassinate Danzō, so Zetsu led them to the Land of Iron. Suigetsu explored the area upon their arrival in an attempt to locate a way to the summit, but he discovered that there were too many Samurai monitoring the area. Jūgo sought another way for them, where they were attacked by samurai after being exposed by Zetsu.
Suigetsu pointed out that Sasuke was doing exactly what he had forbidden him to do when he slaughtered their enemies. He tried to help when the Fourth Raikage arrived to combat Sasuke, but the Raikage broke his Kubikiribōchō in half. He fought Darui with what was left of his blade and was able to hold his own until Darui infused his own blade with electricity, allowing him to overcome Suigetsu and pin him to a wall.
Suigetsu was freed after Sasuke destroyed the chamber they were in. He collected his weapon and rejoined Jūgo. They considered pursuing Sasuke and the Raikage, but concluded it would be too risky. Instead, at Suigetsu’s suggestion, they disguised themselves as samurai to acquire information while avoiding drawing attention to themselves. They were shortly discovered and Jūgo admitted that it wasn’t the best strategy.
Suigetsu and Jūgo escaped their cell in the Land of Iron during the battle, having taken care of the guards and claiming that security had loosened. Suigetsu stated that he wanted to go in search of his Kubikiribōchō, to which Jūgo agreed to assist.
During their search for the sword, Jūgo wondered why Suigetsu, who is easily bored, is so obsessed with those swords. Suigetsu then confessed his ambition of reuniting the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist.
Suigetsu and Jūgo fled the samurai compound. They wandered the woods and talked about their goals. Suigetsu told Jūgo that even if they were to reunite with Sasuke and Karin, it wouldn’t be a great reunion because Karin wanted Sasuke all to herself. They proceeded to one of Orochimaru’s hideouts.
They learn about the war on their way. Jūgo and Suigetsu had a brief talk before Jūgo lost control and attacked Suigetsu, but he was unharmed. Suigetsu discovered Orochimaru’s secret room by breaking through a wall and within it, he found a scroll whose contents shocked him. He accepted the scroll and claimed that it could be useful to Sasuke and help them gain control of the war.
Later, when Sasuke was left to ponder his next steps after Itachi’s soul was released, Suigetsu and Jūgo smashed through the cave’s roof and declared that they had finally located him. Suigetsu examined Kabuto’s body and expressed disgust at his navel-snake, while Jūgo discovered Anko Mitarashi comatose on the cave floor. Suigetsu handed over the scroll he found to Sasuke and made him aware of the reincarnated Madara’s presence, despite Itachi forcing Kabuto to release the Impure World Reincarnation, which left Sasuke speechless.
Suigetsu was fiercely opposed to Sasuke’s decision to resurrect Orochimaru, and tried unsuccessfully to persuade him otherwise. He withdrew behind Kabuto’s inert body as Orochimaru emerged from Anko’s Cursed Seal of Heaven and humbly greeted his former captor. Suigetsu, shocked to see that Orochimaru was uninterested in the war, hastily relocated to the other side of the cave when Orochimaru moved towards Kabuto. He later listened on, as Orochimaru informed Sasuke that they were headed somewhere he was familiar with.
Suigetsu and others noticed Naruto Uzumaki’s chakra from a long distance away when they arrived in Konohagakure. Unfazed, Sasuke instructed them to continue on their way. The group arrived at a decaying temple to recover a mask. Suigetsu, relieved to have left the temple, talked with Orochimaru about his own intention to smash the village as they re-entered Konoha and headed for the Naka Shrine.
Suigetsu entered the secret hall beneath the ruin and watched as Orochimaru began the ritual and assisted him by subduing one of the White Zetsu clones that Jūgo activated with natural energy. Suigetsu prepared a clone for Orochimaru’s abdication from his own wounded body into the clone’s by prying open the clone’s mouth. Suigetsu later observed the reincarnation of the four prior Hokage. He was surprised to see Hashirama Senju standing before him, but he was eventually disappointed by the legend’s contradictory personality.
Suigetsu later trembled in fear when Tobirama and Hashirama clashed over Tobirama’s desire to assault them in retaliation for Sasuke’s declaration to wreak revenge on the village. Suigetsu cowered behind Orochimaru in a half-liquid state as the clash nearly destroyed the Naka Shrine around them.
He was later horrified to learn that Sasuke was entering the war to stop Madara and protect his brother’s sacrifice while listening to the dialogue exchange between the Hokage and Sasuke. Not wishing to get caught up in a battle with the four most powerful reincarnations and three monsters, he planned to flee as soon as he could. His escape, however, was cut short when Karin appeared and began pulverizing the confused Suigetsu. He reluctantly joined Orochimaru and Karin at the location of the five Kage, listening in as the former commented on Tsunade’s poor health.
Suigetsu, commenting on the enormity of the slugs before them, asked how much salt would be required to kill them, sparking an argument between him and Karin. After being threatened by Orochimaru, the two went to Tsunade’s aid. Suigetsu reassembled the Hokage as Karin healed her and later, the trio parted ways with the Hokage and proceeded to the main battlefield.
Upon arriving at the battlefield, Suigetsu greeted Jūgo and Sasuke and remarked on the enormity of the Ten-Tails tree form. He interrupted Karin’s daydream about Sasuke by reminding her that her duty on the battlefield would be to aid in the recovery of the shinobi. Later, Tobi appeared and ravaged the allied forces.
Suigetsu and his team then engaged the Zetsu. Though initially astonished when Karin led the charge, manifesting Adamantine Attacking Chains, he followed up with his Water Gun: Two Guns Technique, which smashed part of Tobi’s head, revealing someone within the clone. The team evades their assailant and rushes to Sasuke’s location, to which Karin grimly says a dark chakra is around him.
When they arrived, they learned the new chakra signature was from Kabuto, who had escaped Itachi’s Izanami loop. While Suigetsu assumed Kabuto was attempting to absorb after merging his being with Sasuke, Kabuto stated painfully that he no longer sought Sasuke and was instead striving to heal him.
Suigetsu didn’t believe Kabuto because he had played a role in starting the war in the first place. Later, he and the rest of the world were caught in the Infinite Tsukuyomi cast by Madara.
After the battle concluded, Suigetsu and the rest of the world were eventually released from the genjutsu after Naruto and Sasuke undid the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Suigetsu appears to be indifferent, just worrying about a few things around him. But when he became fond of his teammates, he was willing to sacrifice his life to protect them, which showed his concern for his teammates.
According to Kisame Hoshigaki, Suigetsu is a genius in the art of murder, as he has a habit of chopping off his victim’s limbs before beheading them. He is also shown to have a sarcastic sense of humor. Suigetsu addressed Kisame as “senpai”, but wished to defeat him and take his sword, telling Sasuke that he will one day serve him as “shark fin soup” after Sasuke suggested that he was not yet strong enough to defeat Kisame, demonstrating sarcasm rather than respect for Kisame.
Suigetsu is fond of killing and on many occasions he has killed people believing that Sasuke wouldn’t notice. He has been shown to have thoughts such as “just this once” and “he’ll forgive me”, however, he was visibly upset that Sasuke killed several samurai during the attack on the Kage Summit, pointing out how many times Sasuke stopped him from killing anyone. Suigetsu was described to have a hostile personality, which was demonstrated through his aggressive attitude most times.
Despite his fury, Suigetsu has displayed moments of keenness and a cool attitude, such as identifying Killer B’s ability as a great swordsman, as Suigetsu is one himself.
He is obsessed with collecting exotic swords and has set himself the aim of collecting all of the swords from the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. He captured Kubikiribōchō of Zabuza Momochi and joined Hebi, only to seize Samehada from Kisame Hoshigake. He even described very passionately the seven swords to Jūgo. He values his swords, which was evidenced by his return to collect his Kubikiribōchō after losing it in the fight against Killer B. His curiosity isn't limited to the seven swords since he also expressed interest in Darui’s sword.
He is exceedingly mischievous and as such, he takes great pleasure in foiling Karin’s intentions to be alone with Sasuke, and has claimed that it is his second favorite thing to do. He has a tendency to sever things, whether they are people or relationships, as he does with Sasuke and Karin.
He is also shown to have a liking towards animals, which was noticeable when he lectured Sasuke to treat animals better and attempted to play with the talking ninja cats from the abandoned Uchiha warehouse at one point. He is also shown to dread Orochimaru because of the latter’s treatment of him in the past. While being skeptical of Orochimaru and his motives, Suigetsu gladly offered to assist his old captor in attacking Konoha and later spoke to Orochimaru using an honorific while fulfilling his instructions.
Despite his confidence, he exhibited a cowardly side when someone clearly of a greater caliber directed their deadly intent at him, as he retreated behind Orochimaru in fear during an exchange between Tobirama and Hashirama Senju.
Suigetsu is a slim-built young man of average height with straight white hair that has a light-blue tint to it. He has almond-shaped purple eyes and pointy teeth; one of which sticks out even with his mouth closed, like most of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. He is dressed in a purple sleeveless shirt, blue slacks, sandals and a belt with water bottles fastened around his waist.
He also has a belt tied over his chest that he uses to carry the Kubikiribōchō. He can change his form at will, usually to aid in his technique and when left unconscious, he is reduced to a jelly-like state. When he is seen recovering from these unconscious phases, he is placed in a large tank of water and takes on the appearance of a fish.
Years later, Suigetsu chose to dress in a black, high-collared button-down with light-coloured, raised sleeves. He wore two belts around his waist, one basic and one with two pouches, one on each side.
Suigetsu is a skilled shinobi. He was described as a prodigy in the art of murder and reincarnation of Zabuza Momochi by the Akatsuki member, Kisame Hoshigake. Suigetsu was even shown briefly fighting Killer B, a flawless jinchūriki, while in Tailed Beast Mode.
Suigetsu, being a member of the Hōzuki clan, is well-versed in the clan’s secret Water Release technique that allows him to convert his body into liquid form and return to his solid body at his will. This provides him more control over his different Water Release Techniques, which allows him to perform them without using any hand sign.
This ability also allows him to shift his bodily shape, giving him the ability to enlarge his limbs and proportionally enhance his strength if necessary. It also makes striking him more difficult because he is composed of liquid, any normal strike will pass straight through his watery body. When attacked, a portion of the water he transforms into can split from his body and be managed, such as creating a water blob around one’s head to drown them. He can also conceal himself in order to go unnoticed.
Because his body is water, he can merge with already existing water to enhance his striking range, as demonstrated when he faced Killer B and use it for large-scale Water Release Technique. When he drops out, he transforms into a jelly-like state, as shown during the confrontation with Killer B. He can also fire compressed, highly pressured water bullets from the tips of his index fingers, which may cause significant damage using both of his hands.
His ability to acquire information via water, such as rain, was demonstrated when he heard about the Fourth Shinobi World War after his imprisonment. He is also shown to be capable of generating water clones.
Suigetsu is spotted carrying water bottles with him since he needs to drink water frequently to stay hydrated. Because of his water-like form, he is vulnerable to lightning-base technique, as seen by his defense of Sasuke from Killer B’s chakra-charged assault. Suigetsu can also perform Wind Release.
Suigetsu learned to wield Zabuza Momochi’s Kubikiribōchō during his time with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. However, he lacks Zabuza’s physical power, as carrying the blade over extended distances appears to tire him out. Despite the fact that Killer B absorbed much of his energy, he was able to uproot a tremendous amount of ground when he swung the blade down at him.
Furthermore, his Hydrification Technique allows him to extend the muscles in his arms, making it easier for him to handle such a heavy weapon. Suigetsu has shown his speed by intercepting Killer B’s and later the Fourth Raikage’s attacks on Sasuke. With a half-severed Kubikiribōchō, he was able to go toe-to-toe with another experienced swordsman like Darui. Even without a sword, he has proven to be a strong taijutsu fighter, as seen when he defeated over hundreds of Tenzen Daikoku’s troops.
(After finding Kubikiribōchō) “Zabuza, this is mine now. It’s heavy.. the great beheading sword of the demon Zabuza of Kirigakure!”
(To his team) “Aren’t you guys tired? Let’s take a break.”
(To himself) “I can’t believe I’d be protecting their hides this often!”
(To Jūgo about Sasuke and Karin) “Being driven by this urge to want to cut things in two, right.. That’s me!!”
