There is much uncertainty about Tatsuji's past as we still don't know anything about his clan or his history. However, it is stated that in the past, Yamato had encountered Tatsuji when he was a member of the Anbu. Later, Tatsuji went missing during a mission, but it was later revealed that he had actually undertaken a covert mission to infiltrate Amegakure. This was done under the orders of Danzo Shimura and the village elders to gather vital intelligence.
Tatsuji debuted in the Jet-Black Signal Fire, episode 64 in the Twelve Guardian Ninja arc in the Naruto Shippuden anime. In the arc, Tatsuji was spotted by some Anbu members outside the village meeting with Danzo, a figure known for his shadowy dealings. Tatsuji was subsequently apprehended and brought back to Konoha for interrogation, raising suspicions about his true intentions. Yamato informed the rest of the village that Tatsuji was indeed a Konoha shinobi, but it remained unclear why he was meeting with Danzo.
However, before the true interrogation could take place, Koharu and Homura, two powerful elders in Konoha, made a surprising revelation to Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage, and the other high-ranking officials. They claimed that Tatsuji was actually working for them and that his meeting with Danzo was part of a covert mission. This revelation was undoubtedly shocking and raised many questions, but it seemed to suggest that Tatsuji was not a traitor after all.
As a result of this disclosure, Tatsuji was presumably released from captivity, with his true motives and loyalties still shrouded in mystery. The incident raised concerns about the delicate balance of power and the secrecy of Konoha's inner workings.
Tatsuji hasn't shown up since these appearances, and his absence makes it impossible to ascertain whether he's dead or alive. Tatsuji is currently assumed to be alive and well unless any information surfaces indicating otherwise.
Despite his affiliation with Danzo, Tatsuji displayed a notable degree of fear when Tsunade issued orders for Ibiki Morino to torture him for information.
Tatsuji possesses a distinct appearance, characterized by his small black eyes that have a very thin black marking underneath them, and long, chin-length hair that has a gray hue. His hair is styled with bangs that gracefully hang over his forehead, framing his face in a captivating manner. He was seen wearing an Amegakure flak jacket, and a large black scarf around his neck that drapes down the front of his body.
Tatsuji is an exceptional shinobi. His formidable abilities allowed him to successfully infiltrate Amegakure, a notoriously difficult village to penetrate, due to the strict control imposed by Pain over its residents.
In addition to his success in Amegakure, Tatsuji was also a respected and trusted member of Konohagakure's Anbu, a prestigious organization of elite ninjas who carry out covert operations on behalf of the village.
It is possible that Tatsuji was inspired by Tatsuji Suga (菅辰次, Suga Tatsuji), the real-life military officer who was kidnapped by his enemies.
