As a genin, Hayate was a part of a squad consisting of IbikiMorino, Tokara and himself. Other than this, not much is known about his childhood and early years in the Hidden Leaf Village. In his years as a shinobi of the Hidden Leaf, he was promoted to the rank of Special Jonin based on his exceptional Kenjutsu skills and became a Chunin Exam proctor. During the Chunin Exams, he alongside his team confronted Orochimaru.

In anime, at some point in his lifespan, Hayate was assigned as an instructor of Kenjutsu for YugaoUzuki. He started spending a lot of time training Uzuki in the art of Kenjutsu and during those times, they eventually fell in love with each other.

Hayate had a great sense of loyalty and responsibility towards the Hidden Leaf Village and he risked his life trying to spy on Kabuto Yakushi and Baki when he suspected them to be planning something against the Hidden Leaf Village. He was exposed in his attempt to spy and ended up confronting Baki, a Jonin of the Hidden Sand Village. He put up a great fight but Baki successfully landed a finishing blow when his Katana got stuck in Baki’s protective jacket. Hayate was killed by Baki and his body was found the next day.

Kabuto defiled Hayate’s grave at some point after The Five Kage Summit to reincarnate him using Edo Tensei No Jutsu and use as a weapon against the Allied Shinobi Forces. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, he was summoned by Kabuto to retrieve a scroll from the LogisticalSupport and Medical Division and attacked the camp to retrieve the scroll when he ran into his lover, Yugao Uzuki, and ended up in a battle against her.

In their battle, he requests her to fight him and seal him away as he does not want to harm his fellow shinobi but Uzuki finds herself unable to attack him and he succeeds in fleeing with the scroll. He then encounters SakuraHaruno whom he recognized from the Chunin Exams. With a bit of a struggle, he successfully subdued. Sakura was later rescued by Uzuki Uzuki builds up the courage to fight him based on a promise they made and they attack each other with their Dance of the Crescent Moon technique.

Hayate lost the battle and praised Uzuki for her improved skills and is sealed away. Later, when Itachi Uchiha successfully released the Edo Tensei No Jutsu, his soul was freed and he returned to the afterlife.

Hayate was promoted to the rank of a Tokubetsu Jonin purely based on his specialty and exceptional skill in Kenjutsu. His special technique was known as Dance of the Crescent Moon, it involves the use of ShadowClone, a Ninjutsu of high difficulty. Using this technique, his shadow clones and he himself attacks the opponent simultaneously with such speed that it creates afterimages and is almost impossible to evade.

In the anime, he has shown another special attack of his, called Secret Sword: Moonlight. He had the capability of performing Dance of the Crescent Moon with a kunai and was capable of evading enemy attacks mid-air.

Q. Why did Hayate Gekko cough?

A. It is presumed that Hayate was battling an illness although no definite data is available confirming the same. It is also believed that his look and bags under his eyes were indicative of him being overworked and probably not getting any sleep. If that’s the case, he might have just had a cold or fever which caused his coughing.

A. Baki, a Jonin of the Hidden Sand Village, killed Hayate. He was spying on Kabuto Yakushi and Baki when he suspected that they were planning something against the Hidden Leaf Village. Later he got into a battle against Baki when he got caught and was killed by Baki.
