As his mother died when he was quite young, Kakashi was raised by his father Sakumo Hatake. His father was pretty well known throughout the village and Kakashi wanted to be like him. In one of Sakumo's missions he made the decision to save his comrades rather than complete the mission, thus abandoning his duties.
He was viewed as a disgrace due to his decision and he couldn't take it any longer and committed suicide. After seeing what his father went through. Kakashi thought that he wouldn't make the same mistakes as his father. From that day he realized that the ninja rules must always take priority.
Kakashi excelled in his classes in the Academy and was named as a prodigy and the best of his generation. This made him really popular with his classmates and at the age of 5, Kakashi graduated at the top of his class. When he became a genin he was put in a team with Rin Nohara and Obito Uchiha under the leadership of Minato Namikaze.
Minato gave his team the bell test to teach them the value of teamwork. Minato did not hold back from his students and they couldn't obtain the bells without teamwork. Even though Kakashi realized this, he only used Rin and Obito as a means to obtain his end goal.
Nonetheless, Minato passed them as they had accomplished the goal by working as a team. He did encourage them to work as a team which was taken more seriously by Rin and Obito than Kakashi. Team Minato went on a lot of missions and due to Kakashi being a stickler of rules, it often made it difficult for all of them to work together.
At the age of 6, Kakashi competed in the chunin exams and passed the exam after he defeated Might Guy in battle and became a chunin. Konoha fought in the Third Great Shinobi War. Team Minato was ordered to destroy the Kannabi bridge. Minato transferred leadership onto Kakashi, who had become a jonin recently, as he needed to head the front lines.
Before going onto their mission, Minato and Rin gave presents to Kakashi on becoming a jonin and Obito had forgotten to get one. After entering Kusa, those three were attacked by Mahiru. Kakashi tried to defeat him with his new jutsu, Chidori but using this made him a bit vulnerable. Minato stepped in time and killed Mahiru, saving Kakashi. Once they were in the clear, Minato advised Kakashi to not use Chidori again.
When the three continued to enter Kusa more, they were attacked by Mahiru's teammates who kidnapped Rin in order to know what their actual mission was. Obito said that they should go and rescuing Rin Kakashi mentioned that they should focus on the mission on hand before saving her.
This angered Obito and he himself went to rescue Rin but before leaving he told Kakashi that it's bad to abandon a mission but it is worse to abandon one's teammates. Kakashi went alone to carry on the mission but realized that Obito was right and went to join him. He arrived in the nick of time and saved Obito from the enemy using the White Light Chakra Sabre which he had got from his dad.
When the enemy turned invisible and tried to attack Obito, Kakashi protected him but he injured his left eye in the process. This made Obito awaken his Sharingan and he killed the enemy. They entered the cave where Rin was kept and rescued her by releasing the Genjutsu that she was in. The enemy tried to capture them inside by forcing a cave-in.
As Kakashi was injured as he couldn't see the rocks that weren't in his sight but before he got crushed by a huge Boulder, Obito saved him by pushing him and getting trapped under the boulder. As he knew that he couldn't move and his injuries were very severe he thought that in his last moments he'll give Kakashi his promotion gifts i.e. his Sharingan in exchange of Kakashi's lost left eye.
After Rin transplanted Obito's Sharingan into Kakashi’s eye, Kakashi went and killed the enemy responsible for Obito's death. As Iwagakure ninjas were on their way, Obito tells Kakashi and Rin to leave him there and he tells Kakashi to promise him that he'll always keep Rin safe. Kakashi fought off the Iwagakure ninjas at the best of his strength and then Minato assisted him in defeating it.
Together they destroyed the Kannabi bridge and return to Konoha to mourn for Obito. Even though the people of the Uchiha clan were against Kakashi owning a Sharingan, Fugaku Uchiha, the head chose to honor Obito's death by letting Kakashi keep the Sharingan. Kiri had kidnapped Rin and sealed the Three-tailed beast inside her. When Kakashi rescued Rin, Kiri sent their men after them but it was a façade as in reality they wanted Rin to lose control and release the Three tails to destroy Konoha. Rin was aware of this and told Kakashi to attack her to prevent this.
Obito witnessed Kakashi killing Rin and was filled with sadness and hatred which led to him joining Madara. The trauma caused by this incident Kakashi awakened his Magekyo Sharingan and he passed out. He was later on found by Konoha ninjas. As he'd lost his two teammates and failed to keep his promise to Obito, Kakashi fell into depression. When he joined the Anbu, the other members believed that Kakashi would kill his own comrade without a second thought.
This made Kakashi avoid his peers and he spent his time alone. By that time Minato was chosen to become the Fourth Hokage of the Leaf for his outstanding performance during the war. He also tried to help Kakashi (who was then a part of Anbu) to help him get out of his darkness and restore his value in life by telling him to look after his wife Kushina during her pregnancy. During his spare time and he spends time visiting the graves of his friends Rin Nohara and Obito Uchiha.
Once Orochimaru got caught red-handed by Hiruzen. Even though he knew that it was his duty, the Third Hokage could not bring himself to kill his student. Seeing this as an opportunity Orochimaru escaped but he encountered young Kakashi but despite Kakashi’s best efforts, Orochimaru escaped.
Kakashi and Itachi Uchiha were paired up and were given the mission to observe the meeting that took place between Konoha and the Land of Woods. When they tried to betray Konoha, Kakashi and Itachi moved in and defeated them. Even though he was impressed with Itachi’s skills, he advised Itachi that he should value his friends. When Kakashi got to know that Itachi was responsible for the death of Shisui Uchiha in pursuit of power.
Because of what happened with Itachi, the Third Hokage felt that the kind-hearted people didn't belong in Anbu. The Third Hokage relieved him from his Anbu duties and gave him some genin teams to train.
Since his childhood, Kakashi was very independent and self-confident which can sometimes make people think that he is arrogant and condescending. He is also quite perceptive and intuitive, he can quickly realize and analyze a situation.
After his father passed away, Kakashi became stern and cold towards people around him, he followed orders to the T and chastised anyone who disobeyed them and he was willing to abandon his friends if it meant that he could finish the mission.
As an adult, Kakashi has a relaxed and almost bored attitude. He does not get too worked up about anyone or anything. Even though he's an exceptional shinobi, he is never arrogant and is very modest about his abilities. He's not punctual and shows up whenever it is suitable for him. He only does this regarding matters that aren't of that much importance to him.
In reality, Kakashi likes to remain in solitude and is still as apathetic as he was as a child, like bluntly speaking about sensitive topics and occasionally ignoring his fellow classmates whenever they crossed paths. He likes to remain alone in his spare time and he spends time visiting the graves of his friends Rin Nohara and Obito Uchiha.
He updates them on whatever is going on in his life, recent things going on in the village, and people they knew but the majority of the time he shares his regret of not being able to save them in time and holds himself responsible for their deaths. After Rin died, Kakashi started experiencing PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and started having nightmares about her death and he used to become depressed whenever anyone mentioned Rin.
He felt guilty that he could not uphold his end of the promise to Obito as he came to terms that Rin chose to die. This causes Obito's death to weigh more heavily on him. Kakashi felt that if he had cared more about teamwork and friendship then Obito wouldn't have died. Minato thought that in order to ease Kakashi's pain, he told him to Anbu. During his time in the Anbu, Kakashi came to be known for his cold-bloodedness.
Obito's death changed Kakashi entirely and he started to value teamwork and placed his teammates well being over anyone else. He started to believe that goals can be accomplished more effectively together and to ask for help whenever you need it and offer help when someone needs it.
If anyone abuses or mistreats their teammate, Kakashi’s attitude changes and he doesn't hesitate to attack that person without any merit. He also tells his students that they should demonstrate good teamwork even though Team 7 takes time to learn it. When Sasuke went rogue he hoped that Sasuke would correct himself and come back, his patience did pay him when Sasuke finally reunited with Team 7 at the end of the series.
Kakashi was labeled by Might Guy as his long-term rival which was driven by his enthusiasm and dedication that he could be as skilled and a great ninja as Kakashi. He constantly challenged Kakashi and even though he used to lose sometimes, he never let it hinder him and continued. Through their years of constantly competing with each other, Guy and Kakashi became very good friends and used to even hang out with each other.
The competition between Guy and Kakashi increased not in a bad way but for the good. Even though Kakashi had a greater score, Might Guy managed to catch up to him and eventually the difference between them was only one point, and throughout the years that has remained consistent. The guy was very proud of this achievement. Over the years they became great friends and Kakashi considered him his closest and most reliable friend.
By the end of the Fourth Great Shinobi War, he acknowledged that Guy had surpassed him. When Kakashi became the Hokage, he worked dutifully towards the well-being of the village. He believes that no one should become a ninja without appreciating its importance.
When he meets his students for the first time i.e Team 7, Kakashi says that he has many hobbies but doesn't share what they exactly are. He is a fan of the Icha Icha series and reads it quite regularly. Naruto notes this series to be his weakness, which he takes advantage of during the bell test by threatening to spoil the ending of the new book that just got released.
This forced Kakashi to shut his eyes and ears which left him vulnerable. Even though he's a huge fan of the book, he'd be quite embarrassed sharing it with others and usually gets flustered when asked to read it out loud.
Kakashi has a strong resemblance to his father. He has spiky silver hair in a left parting, dark grey eyes and had a relaxed expression. As his eye was injured during the Third Great Shinobi War, it was replaced by the Sharingan given to him by Obito which he covers with his forehead protector.
After his original eye was restored by Naruto after the Fourth Great Shinobi War, he wore his forehead protector properly over his head. Since early childhood he wore a mask so that his face isn't visible. When his mask isn't there, we can see his sharp jawline and beauty mark under his mouth.
Kakashi wears the usual Konoha uniform, a green flake jacket, dark blue pants and a long sleeved shirt. He also wears fingerless gloves with metal plates on the backhand. When he became the Hokage, he only wore the clothing when there was a formal occasion. Kakashi’s Hokage haori says ' Sixth Hokage.'
As a child, Kakashi wore a long-sleeved anchor grey shirt, a green scarf, and slate-colored shorts. He also wore blue sandals. During the Third Great Shinobi War, he wore a black t-shirt with white stripes in the middle of the sleeves with metal arm protectors, leather straps around his back, and chest with dark pants. During his time with the Anbu, he wore a blue suit with a Grey flak jacket with strapped-up sandals and arm guards.
Kakashi is a prodigy and one of the strongest Shinobi in Konoha. His combat and tactical abilities are exceptional. He mostly relies on Ninjutsu, and once he acquired the Sharingan, his arsenal of techniques grew more and more as he had over a thousand jutsus mastered.
Kakashi also has his own pack of Ninken that he raised as puppies, and he can summon them to retrieve things, attack or deliver messages, etc. He can use all five nature transformations. He is a natural at Lightning Release, and he can transfer it to weapons and use it to increase its powers.
He possesses the Sharingan which he got from Obito as a replacement for his right eye. Even though Kakashi loses his Sharingan, it doesn't hinder Kakashi at all and he still remains the most skilled ninja in Konoha. Kakashi is an exceptional shinobi who has various techniques up his sleeve. Some of them are:
As a replacement for his left eye, Kakashi received the Sharingan from Obito. It became Kakashi's most distinct feature and he came to be known as 'Kakashi of the Sharingan.' With the help of the Sharingan, he can perfectly copy any jutsu that he sees, and can also use genjutsu. As he isn't a pure Uchiha, he cannot deactivate his Sharingan and it also drains a lot of his Chakra.
Kakashi's Mangekyo Sharingan was activated after Rin's death. Despite not being a pure Uchiha, he's able to maintain the Mangekyo Sharingan well. But he does suffer from its side effects, like bleeding eyes or deterioration of vision.
Using this, the user shoots bolts of electricity from their hand to strike a target. Kakashi uses this as a replacement for the Lightning Cutter, and he can quickly strike targets with it.
This is a high concentration of lightning chakra which is channeled into the user's hand, created by Kakashi Hatake. It can pierce through a person and can kill them instantly. This makes it useful for assassinations. However, it requires a lot of chakra and can only be used within a limit.
