Shin was a former devotee of Orochimaru, and a test subject for his various mad experiments. Shin possessed a unique genetic makeup that allowed him to perform tissue and organ transplants without fear of rejection. During his time with Orochimaru, they carried out a number of experiments with the goal of uncovering genetic secrets. Shin's teeth and nerves were used to make clones, the majority of which he took with him when he left Orochimaru's side.
In his time with Orochimaru, Shin at some point became obsessed with the Uchiha Clan and started idolizing Itachi Uchiha, a well-known and renowned member of the clan. His obsession with the clan was so intense that he started mimicking the Uchiha Clan, adopting their surname and traditional attire. He even implanted numerous Sharingan on various parts of his body. Orochimaru harvested his right arm, which was implanted with numerous Sharingans. Later, he transplanted that right arm to Danzo alongside some of Hashirama’s cells. A brief period of time after this event, Shin left Orochimaru’s side with the majority of his clones.
Shin spent most of his early years by Orochimaru’s side. He was practically raised by him, which resulted in his perception of the world being pretty shallow. Although he had mastery over many scientific evolutions, he was a dedicated follower of the notion, “Survival of the Fittest”. In his eyes, the only purpose of an organism’s lifespan is to survive and pass on its genes to its offspring, the next generation. He firmly believed in natural selection. From his point of view, conflict and chaos played a major role in the evolution of the human race. He despised peace and wanted to bring an end to this era of peace. To pursue this goal of his, he set out to revive Akatsuki and bring chaos to the world.
Shin idolized Itachi and was filled with hatred for Sasuke Uchiha for killing Itachi. He considered Sasuke as a stain on the name of the legendary Uchiha Clan and thought of him as the shame of the Uchiha Clan. He wanted to kill Sasuke to avenge Itachi. He abducted Sarada Uchiha, Sasuke’s daughter, in an attempt to trap him.
Shin would refer to all of his clones as his sons although he never showed any sign of parental affection towards them. He went to the extent of using them as mere tools in his conquest and did not hesitate to sacrifice them if needed. In his battle against Sasuke, he found himself beaten and realized he needed to retreat and regroup. He summoned his clones to attack Sasuke to give him the opening he needed to fall back. He was taken aback when suddenly he was stabbed by his clone. Ironically, his clones also believed in survival of the fittest and they decided Shin was not strong enough to lead them. They started cloning themselves without Shin’s knowledge in order to take down Shin. In the end, he fell into the hands of death as an outcome of the injuries he received from his own clones.
Shin possessed great resilience and endurance. He was capable of going against SakuraUchiha in combat, surviving one of her punches which contained monstrous strength, capable of shattering boulders. He then performed transplant surgery on himself while having a conversation with her.
Due to his unique genetic constitution, he was able to embed multiple Sharingan eyes all over his body and activate them for as long as he pleased. He had a creature in his arsenal that possessed a Sharingan. He linked his vision with that creature, allowing him to extend his field of vision.
He also possessed Mangekyo Sharingan in his right eye. The means by which he was able to awaken it are still unknown. With the unique ability of his Mangekyo, Shin was able to fully manipulate any tool that he had marked by his left hand.
Shin was an expert in Medical Ninjutsu and had a thorough understanding of human anatomy. He demonstrated his Medical Ninjutsu ability by performing transplant surgery on himself while conversing with Sakura throughout the procedure.
