Kakashi had endured much over the course of his career as a shinobi of the Hidden Leaf Village. He was always considered a prodigal warrior, shattering norms for typical growth pattern of young ninja as he was promoted to the rank of Chunin at 6 and Jonin at 12 because his skills were simply that undeniable. Infamously known as the Copy Ninja, thanks to his ability to steal any non Kekkei Genkai jutsu he witnessed because of his Sharingan. In terms of combat prowess, there was no question that Kakashi was more than fit to be the leader of Konoha.
Initially, Kakashi did not even want the title himself. Despite his tutelage of the legendary Team 7 that were instrumental in saving the world, Kakashi felt he was a poor leader who was unworthy to lead an entire village. This persistent self doubt and pessimism had always stemmed from Kakashi’s past failures to save his teammates Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara. It was worsened by the shock of learning that former, Obito, was not only alive but a leading cause of the Fourth Shinobi World War and this only made the trauma worse. After Kaguya’s defeat, where Obito granted Kakashi one final boon that was instrumental in her defeat thanks to his Mangekyo Sharingan, Obito gave one final speech to his old friend and professed his belief of him one day being Hokage. This freed Kakashi from the guilt that had long wracked him for over a decade and after a year-long transitional period, he would finally accept the mantle and preside over an unprecedented period of peace.
Kakashi was the son of the legendary White Fang, Sakumo Hatake. As his only living parent, due to his mother dying when he was very young, Kakashi idolized him. This made things that much more painful when his father committed suicide after choosing to save his comrades rather than complete a vital mission which lead to massive consequences for the Land of Fire. Kakashi resolved to never make the same mistake as his father and after graduating from Konoha’s academy when he was only 5 years old, he was paired with Obito Uchicha and Rin Nohara, with Minato Namikaze as their leader and instructor.
Kakashi was a clear step above his peers, and in many cases could complete tasks far beyond the level a typical genin would ever even hope to accomplish. This drew the jealousy of Obito, envious of both his skill and his popularity, and they constantly butted heads. Later during the Third Shinobi World War, Rin would be captured by enemy forces.
Hardened by the trauma of losing his father to the same decision, Kakashi insists on the completion of their mission over Rin’s safety. This threw Obito into a rage, telling his that while abandoning a mission is bad, abandoning your teammates is even worse. While it wasn’t immediate, Kakashi caved and followed after Obito, only for tragedy to strike after locating and rescuing Rin
Kakashi was injured by a falling boulder during their escape from the cave Rin was being withheld in, and before he was crushed, Obito pushed him out of the way, taking his place. Knowing his time was short, he apologised to Kakashi for their constant fighting, and offered up his freshly activated Sharingan eye to replace the one he had lost during the course of their mission. Rin and Kakashi would escape, but would be traumatized by the loss of their teammate and friend.
Sadly, this would only be the beginning of Kakashi’s suffering. During a later mission, Rin and Kakashi would find themselves surrounded. Rin would tell Kakashi she had been implanted with the Three Tails and was to be used as a means to destroy the Hidden Leaf from within. It saw her beg Kakashi to kill her in order to prevent that. Kakashi refuses to allow another one of his teammates to die, but Rin ends up making that choice for him as jumps in the way of Kakashi’s Lightning Blade midfight.
While Kakashi survived this incident, he would understandably be burdened with an incalculable amount of emotional trauma, having seen both of his squadmates die, and even being directly responsible for one death. Minato, who had become Hokage at this point, hoped to save his student from this deep pit of depression by having him serve in Konoha’s own black ops unit ANBU, as well as becoming the bodyguard of his pregnant wife Kushina.
After years of service, and the tragic death of the Fourth Hokage protecting the village and his wife from the attack of the Nine Tails, Kakashi was asked by the Third Hokage to return to the general forces. Kakashi was notorious for how many teams of academy graduates he would fail for not fully understanding his principles, but eventually, one group would change the course of his life forever.
Even without his Sharingan, Kakashi is one of the overall strongest shinobi in the known world. He is an extremely well rounded fighter, excelling in all three of the main ninja skills in Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu. Over the years he has learned over a thousand techniques due to the nature of his Sharingan, earning him the nickname of Copy Ninja Kakashi
Early on in the series, the one area that Kakashi wasn’t quite so absurd in was chakra reserves. Being a Sharingan user who isn’t an Uchiha by blood, he cannot turn off its effects, causing it to have a constant draining effect on his Chakra. And it why he tends to keep it covered when not in direct combat.
He himself claimed he could only manage to use his signature Lightning Blade only 4 times a day. By the series end, however this is clearly no longer the case, as he is able to use many of his signature and copied techniques in succession.
Even with the loss of his Sharingan after the conclusion of the Fourth Shinobi World War, he is still one of the most dangerous shinobi in the world. No longer having to constantly worry about the constant drain on his chakra, his otherworldly level of control makes his level of endurance unmatched. He is capable of using all five forms of chakra release, with Lightning being his natural affinity, hence why his developed techniques such as Lightning Blade and Purple Lightning to take advantage of his speciality.
Kakashi is infamously known for his versatility, even before taking into account his notoriety as the Copy Ninja. There are no clear weak spots in his overall skillset
“In the ninja world, those who break the rules are scum, that’s true, but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum.”
“I won’t allow my comrades to die. I’ll protect you with my life. Trust me.”
“The next generation will always surpass the previous one. It’s one of the never-ending cycles in life.”
“Behind this mask is… Another mask! Pretty cool, huh?”
“You’ll only tear yourself apart and even if you succeed with your revenge, what would you have then… nothing, emptiness.”
As one of the very first adult characters introduced in the series proper, Kakashi has a very long list of fights to choose from. His fight against Zabuza as a part of Team 7’s first mission is the first glimpse into his full capabilities as a Shinobi. This is only made even more clear later on in Shippuden, where he is pitted against the fearsome foes of the Akatsuki such as Hidan and Kakazu. His final match against his formerly thought to be long dead teammate and rival Obito, however, is considered one of the most emotional and fulfilling battles in the entire series.
A. The main reason is because as a non-Uchiha, the Sharingan’s effects canot be turned off, meaning it is constantly draining his chakra reserves. Covering the eye helps alleviate that issue. He does enjoy messing with others about it, however.
A. Kakashi will rarely be seen without reading fro, his favourite book series Makeout Paradise, written by Jiraiya himself.
A. It was stolen by Madara during the Fourth Shinobi World War. During the final battle with Kaguya he was granted dual Mangekyo Sharingan for a limited amount of time, but the effect faded as Obito went on to the afterlife.
