Black Zetsu’s birth goes way back to the birth of the first two shinobi; Hagoromo and Hamura Otsutsuki. They were deceived by their mother, who was using the World Tree to sacrifice innocent lives for her gain. Her sons found out about this and put a stop to this by uniting and sealing her away in the moon. As she was dying, her will was incarnated in the form of Black Zetsu who escaped and laid dormant for years, with the sole objective to bring Kaguya back.

Of the two sons, Hamura went to the moon to make sure that she doesn’t escape and Hagoromo choose to stay on Earth to spread chakra and promote world peace. During this time, he becomes the father of two sons, Indra and Asura. On his deathbed, he makes Asura the new leader but Indra was not pleased about this and Black Zetsu took advantage of this, causing war to break out.

Many, many years later, Black Zetsu discovers Madara and he believed that Madara is the way to revive Kaguya. He manipulates and convinces Madara that he is the reincarnation of Madara’s will and makes him think that Infinite Tsukuyomi is the way.

Madara gets used as a vessel to summon Kaguya after being manipulated and killed by Black Zetsu. However, Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, the reincarnations of Asura and Indra, put a stop to this by defeating Kaguya. However, Uzumaki saw that Black Zetsu still desires to revive Kaguya and sealed him away as well.

Black Zetsu has abilities which are more than the average shinobi that you see in the Naruto universe. Its abilities include being able to manipulate people mentally and physically, which is a very rare ability. It can infest people and make them do its bidding while also creating clones of itself. That is called the white Zetsu and could also use all five nature transformations in addition to yin and yang release.

Zetsu does not seem to have a problem with chakra at all. Due to its parasitic nature, it can use the host body’s chakra till they are out of it. It can use various jutsu of its own and can use jutsu learnt by the host, including the Sharingan.

The physical prowess of Black Zetsu seems to be on a different level. It does not age physically and seems to be in the peak physical form at all times. It can also blend into nature, making it seem as if it teleports and vanishes around. Not only that, this body can also take over others’ bodies.

Black Zetsu has abilities which are common and uncommon in the Naruto Universe. These include the following:

1. Wood Release: Wood release is a technique that is seen being used by Yamato sensei. It is the manipulation of wood. It can be used to entrap enemies and also make houses out of it. It is also used as a communication device with the help of roots.
2. Mayfly: This is a technique which is used for quick transport from place to place. It is quite fast, and it blends Zetsu into the surroundings to do so.
3. Sharingan: Sharingan is a technique that is exclusive to the Uchiha clan. It can be used by others if it is implanted onto them. Black Zetsu uses it in a different way; by taking over Obito Uchiha’s body.
4. Infestation: This ability allows Black Zetsu to take over a person’s body and make them do things against their will. It can also use the ability to use the other person’s jutsu, like Obito’s Sharingan.
