Yakumo Kurama’s Background

Yakumo Kurama was born with a frail and delicate body, which prevented her from participating in the physically demanding activities required of a ninja. Her father grew concerned about her future and implored the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi to appoint a special tutor who could train Yakumo to become a skilled ninja despite her limitations. The chosen tutor was none other than Kurenai Yuhi, a genjutsu specialist who shared a similar background with Yakumo.

Drawing inspiration from Rock Lee, who overcame his own shortcomings to become a powerful ninja under the guidance of his sensei, Might Guy, Yakumo resolved to hone her genjutsu abilities to become a formidable ninja. She hoped that her devotion and dedication would enable her to surpass her physical limitations and prove her worth as a ninja.

Despite Yakumo's determination to become a ninja, Kurenai lacked the same optimistic outlook as Might Guy and felt that she was not equipped to train Yakumo properly. Eventually, Kurenai refused to continue training Yakumo and encouraged her to pursue a different path in life. However, Yakumo was unwilling to give up on her dreams and continued to pursue her training.

This ultimately led to a dangerous situation, as it was discovered that Yakumo had a sentient and malevolent personality within her mind called the Ido. This personality was generated from the id part of her psyche and had the ability to control her and her immense powers for destructive purposes. Fearing the potential threat that Yakumo posed to the village, the Third Hokage ordered for her powers to be sealed.

Unfortunately, the seal proved to be inadequate, and the Ido was able to break free from its confines. It then cast an illusion of a fire consuming the Kurama clan's household, which resulted in the death of Yakumo's parents. Although it was the Ido who was responsible for the tragedy, Yakumo believed that the fire was started on the order of the Third Hokage. She overheard a conversation that she believed indicated that the Third Hokage was planning to eliminate her if she became too great a threat to the village. This belief fueled her anger and desire for revenge against the Third Hokage.

Yakumo Kurama Rescue Mission

Yakumo, consumed by a desire for revenge against Konohagakure and Kurenai, fled from her heavily guarded mountainside manor and made her way to the village. There, she created a painting of lightning striking the Hokage's office. As the painting came to life and the building caught fire, Yakumo quickly gathered her belongings and attempted to flee the scene. However, her escape was short-lived as a team of highly skilled medical ninjas and Anbu operatives quickly intercepted her, rendering her unconscious with a powerful sleep-inducing drug. Naruto Uzumaki, who had been tailing her after witnessing her artwork, was warned to stay out of their way before the group returned Yakumo to her manor for further containment.

After the failed attempt to burn down the Hokage's office, a group of Yakumo's clan members, led by her uncle Unkai Kurama, attacked her manor. Kurenai quickly sprang into action and used her genjutsu to trap the clan members, but was soon confronted by Unkai. Fortunately, Might Guy arrived on the scene with Team 8 members Sakura Haruno and Naruto Uzumaki. With Hinata Hyuga's Byakugan, Naruto was able to defeat Unkai and vowed to rescue Yakumo.

Later on, Yakumo put Konohagakure under a powerful genjutsu that appeared to be a reality, but it was eventually discovered. She captured Naruto and the others with the genjutsu, but eventually only kept Kurenai. However, when Naruto entered the genjutsu once again and revealed to Yakumo what Kurenai had been hiding, she remembered the truth about what really happened to her parents. Overwhelmed with guilt, Yakumo attempted to take her own life but was stopped by Ido. Eventually, with the help of Kurenai, Yakumo was able to overcome Ido and come to the realization that her former tutor truly cared for her.

Yakumo Kurama’s Personality

Yakumo is a complex character and evolves throughout the story. Initially, she is determined and ambitious, resolved to become a skilled ninja despite her physical limitations. She is also shown to be resentful towards Kurenai for refusing to train her further and is fueled by a desire for revenge against the Third Hokage for the perceived role he played in her parents' deaths.

However, as the story progresses, Yakumo's personality becomes darker and more unstable. This is due to the presence of the malevolent personality Ido within her mind, which controls her and her immense powers for destructive purposes. Yakumo becomes consumed by her desire for revenge, leading her to attempt to burn down the Hokage's office and put the entire village under a powerful genjutsu.

When the truth about her parents' deaths is revealed, Yakumo is overwhelmed with guilt and attempts to take her own life. However, with the help of Kurenai, she is able to overcome Ido and come to the realization that her former tutor truly cared for her.

Overall, Yakumo is a complex character with a mix of determination, ambition, resentment, and darkness, but ultimately learns to confront and overcome her inner demons.

Yakumo's appearance is defined by her long, flowing brown hair, which she often wears straight on one side while braided on the other. She adorns her hair with a clip featuring two circular designs that adds a subtle touch of elegance to her overall appearance.

Yakumo often wears a pink kimono that is fastened by a matching pink sash with two pockets on the front. Her outfit is completed with violet baggy pants and red mesh armor. She pairs this ensemble with orange sandals.

During her training with Kurenai, Yakumo was seen wearing a series of kimono-like shirts that had long right sleeves and short left sleeves. These shirts were held close by a wide pink sash that provided both support and flexibility during training. Underneath it all, Yakumo wore red mesh armor to protect herself from injury. Her outfit was finished with a light-blue skirt and a brown headband.

Yakumo Kurama’s Abilities

Yakumo possesses the kekkei genkai of her clan in its entirety, making her an extremely powerful genjutsu user. Her abilities are so potent that only someone with an equal level of skill in genjutsu can hope to break free from her illusions. Her genjutsu is capable of manipulating the victim's mind to the point where any physical harm that occurs within the illusion is also inflicted upon the victim's body in reality. This makes it possible for Yakumo to potentially kill her opponents without laying a finger on them.

Yakumo has a unique way of casting her illusions, using paintings as a medium to channel her powers. She can create such realistic illusions that those around her are convinced that what they are seeing is real, despite it only existing within the confines of her genjutsu. Her range of influence is quite expansive, demonstrated by her ability to put the entire village of Konohagakure under a powerful illusion. However, there are certain organisms, such as the kikaichū, that are immune to her genjutsu's effects. Despite her physical limitations, Yakumo's proficiency in genjutsu makes her a formidable opponent to anyone who crosses her path.

Did You Know?

  • Yakumo's name, like other members of the Kurama clan, is connected to clouds. Specifically, the word "Yakumo" (八雲) refers to stratus clouds and is derived from an old term meaning "eight clouds."

  • It's probable that the Ido monster was named after the "Id" in Sigmund Freud's model of the human psyche. The name draws a parallel to the instinctual and darker aspects of the mind, which reflect the destructive tendencies of Yakumo's second personality.
