After Luffy had defeated Crocodile, Smoker and Hina anchored in Tamarisk in order to meet Tashigi again and capture Crocodile. Smoker received an apology from Tashigi for not only failing to capture the Straw Hat Pirates but also for aiding their victory over Crocodile. She nodded in agreement through her tears when Smoker instructed her to grow stronger. He gave the command to his other subordinates to get on board as he descended from the ship’s deck.

Responding to a call from Marine Headquarters, Smoker disputed their choice to honor him and Tashigi for taking down Crocodile, arguing that the Straw Hat Pirates had put in a lot of effort to preserve the nation. Hina tried to persuade him to accept the awards and promotion, but before disconnecting, he firmly reprimanded the Marine on the other line.

The Straw Hat Pirates waited for Vivi’s decision of whether or not she would join them in the sea off the coast of Tamarisk before stopping there a short while later. The group set sail as the Marines under Hina’s order began to close in and corner them. However, Luffy was confident that Vivi would show up.

Eventually, Vivi and Karoo did show up but only to part ways. She screamed that she had to lead her people and that she could not go because she loved her nation, but she questioned if they would still refer to her as a crewmate if they ever saw each other again. Luffy was about to respond “yes”, but was stopped by Nami, while she explained that the Marines would go after Vivi, if they learned about her affiliation with Straw Hat Pirates. So, they walked away while displaying the “X” markings they had received as a response to Vivi’s question. Vivi and Karoo watched as their friends sailed off.
