Caesar Clown in One Piece

Past

Caesar was a member of MADS, along with Vegapunk, Vinsmoke Judge, Queen, and Buckingham Stussy. Vegapunk created products that promoted peace and won honors for them while Caesar worked on creating Artificial Devil Fruits and Queen and Judge built their own weaponry. After the majority of the scientists were accepted into the World Government, Caesar, and Vegapunk started working together on Punk Hazard. The two of them were close friends, and they tested weapons and substances on inmates who were brought to the island as test subjects. Caesar worked on creating a potent gas weapon capable of mass murder but was told four years ago to stop as it was against the law.

When Vegapunk had finished cleaning up his mess, he kicked Caesar off the team, but Caesar mistook this for a sign of jealousy and detonated the poison bomb out of rage. The bulk of Punk Hazard's people died along with all of the island's plant life as the toxic gas from the bomb spread over the whole island. Vegapunk and Caesar were the only survivors. Punk Hazard was shut down by the Marines following the poison gas incident. Caesar Clown returned to Punk Hazard after breaking out of jail and used his devil fruit power to clear the island of the poisonous gas. He combined the gas with a devil fruit to create Smiley.

Caesar conducted experiments on kidnapped children while working on Punk Hazard with the intention of turning them into giants. He told the kids that they were sick and that if their parents refused to have Caesar treat them, their illness may spread to them. In order to gain their trust, Caesar revealed to the kids that he once had a son who passed away from the same illness, and that is why he wanted to find a solution for it. He also worked together with the Kaidou and the Donquixote Doflamingo to invent SAD, a material used to make artificial Devil Fruits. Big Mom also asked Caesar to do gigantification research so she could gigantify her family. Caesar's research was unsuccessful because he only focused on exploiting the children's growth spurt and was unable to stop the deadly side effects. However, he continued to make up reports to Big Mom in order to extort money from her to fund his own research.

Each time, he claimed he needed more funding but instead spent the extra money on himself. He lied to Big Mom every time she inquired about the progress and outcomes. Caesar formed an alliance with him when Trafalgar Law arrived at Punk Hazard. Law stated his desire to remain on the island and have unrestricted access to the island and that neither of them digs too deeply into one another's personal lives. Law also insisted that no one should be aware of his presence on the island. Caesar eventually agreed to let Law stay on the condition that he and Monet entered into a contract to trade hearts, making it difficult for both of them to betray one another should one of them undertake a risky move.

Punk Hazard Arc

During the Punk Hazard Arc, Caesar was upset when he found out that Trafalgar Law was fighting with the Marines from G-5. When he got to know that the Marines had seen the stolen children, he was horrified and worried that his covert operations would be discovered. When Monet came, he told him that Brownbeard's Centaur Patrol Unit and Vegapunk's dragon had been destroyed. He also got to know about the Straw Hats’ arrival on the island. Later on, Monkey D. Luffy had beaten one of the centaurs. Later, Law offered Caesar a heart that supposedly belonged to Smoker. Law watched calmly with a displeased look on his face as Caesar clutched the heart in his palm.

Caesar said that he had already sent men to deal with the Marines and told them to kill Brownbeard and capture Franky because he was using Vegapunk's laser technology. Caesar drew a gun at Law and questioned him about his connection with Luffy after Monet told him about their encounter at Sabaody Archipelago and Marineford, to which Law strongly denied any involvement with the Straw Hats. Caesar decided to stop collecting victims for his experiments after so many people showed up on Punk Hazard and instead wanted to free Smiley while announcing that he will not allow them to leave this island.

The Straw Hats initially believed it to be a mountain until realizing it was heading in their direction. Smiley began firing little pieces of itself in their direction, some of which struck the G-5 Marines. The Marines then tried to use their swords to cut down Smiley, but they were poisoned in the process. They even attempted to ignite Smiley, but it just led to an explosion that took several lives. After the explosion, Smiley continued to discharge its fragments, and those fragments that landed in the water began to poison it and destroy aquatic life.

Caesar instructed Smiley to attack Luffy while they were engaged in battle. After that, Zoro, Brook, and Kin'emon fought Smiley, but they were helpless to stop them. Later, when Smiley was pursuing Zoro, Brook, and Kin'emon, he ate a candy that had been placed in front of him by Caesar. Smiley began to yelp in pain after eating the candy. Later, Caesar showed up at the place where Usopp and Nami were struggling to calm the kids. Caesar used sweets as an enticement to draw the kids to him. Usopp and Nami make an effort to fight Caesar off, but he suffocates them both. Upon awakening, a wounded Brownbeard attempted to exact revenge on Caesar for betraying him.

Brownbeard was easily defeated by Caesar, who then took the kids back to the institution. Meanwhile, Smiley continued to wail in pain as the candy dissolved, and Caesar bid him farewell while expressing his joy in him. When Smiley's body crumbled, he returned to his natural gas form. Later, once Caesar has succeeded in capturing Law, Tashigi, Smoker, Luffy, Robin, and Franky, he uses the toxic gas and spreads it around the island. The island became inhabitable by the toxic gas, except for the areas around the research area. By releasing the gas in Section A and B of the lab, Caesar hopes to even petrify his rivals. Law destroys the research center to prevent that from happening, and he even beats Vergo, who was acting as a double agent for Doflamingo while on the island.

When Caesar and Luffy fought again, he told Luffy that he wouldn't be able to defeat him because if he attacks him, then Doflamingo will hunt him down and kill him. Luffy yelled that he had already encountered powerful opponents. Caesar is quite concerned about the devastation that Law's attack has caused to his base. He instructed his soldiers to flood the room from the control room. When Caesar finally lost his composure, he said that they were all his test subjects and that he did not care how many of them died. Caesar's men thought that he was joking and this was a part of his scheme to destroy Luffy.

As the gas flows in, Caesar absorbs it and expands, raving hysterically about how successful his experiment was and how he would soon rule the land, and runs after Luffy to unleash his final attack. Luffy retaliated with a strong attack which sent Caesar crashing into a tanker and knocked him unconscious. He was soon found by Buffalo and Baby 5 and gained consciousness after hearing Baby 5’s explosion. Caesar tries to flee after Usopp and Nami help wipe out Buffalo and Baby 5, but Usopp captures him and puts Seastone handcuffs on him. The G-5 Marines made Caesar explain how to remove the gas while everyone else was having a celebration and a feast. Caesar was shocked to find Smoker alive. He was then taken captive by the Heart Pirates and Straw Hat Pirates.

Caesar Retrieval Arc

The Thousand Sunny was invaded by Breed and his army of animals when Caesar was sound asleep. During the chaos, Breed grabbed Caesar. Caesar laughed as he made fun of the Straw Hats, believing Breed was working for Doflamingo. Caesar, however, only understood why Breed wanted to capture him after taking him to his ship and locking him up, as he could use his scientific expertise to assist in making Breed's "dream world" become a reality. Law was able to release Caesar with the help of Luffy's blows. The scientist escaped by running around Breed's ship until he came across the Shark Submerge III, but Luffy and Law teleported to his location and took Caesar back with them. Caesar was brought back to the Thousand Sunny after Breed had been defeated.

Dressrosa Arc

Law got in touch with Doflamingo and gave Caesar permission to contact Doflamingo in order to make sure that he was okay. Doflamingo got an honest apology from Caesar for being kidnapped and put to use as leverage. Law, Usopp, and Robin were in charge of getting Caesar to Green Bit. The battling fish started to assault Law's group as they walked across the bridge. Knowing that Caesar could help defend the bridge, Law freed him from his restraints. Law said that he had Caesar's heart in case he was planning to betray them. In order to cross, the group then made use of Caesar's ability to fly. They arrived at Green Bit and found a Marine ship stuck on the island. Caesar began to fear that the Marines had learned of the deal.

Caesar and Law go towards the southern shore as Usopp and Robin investigate the island. Caesar was shocked to learn that the negotiations had already failed when an exact copy of Robin's upper body appeared. Caesar was thrilled to see Doflamingo when Issho and he arrived at the exchange location. Law wouldn't let Caesar go since Doflamingo never kept his half of the promise. Law suddenly said that he never said the heart belonged to Caesar as Caesar sprinted towards Doflamingo, asking him to give back his heart. Law grabbed Caesar and used Room to flee while Issho was distracted. When the Thousand Sunny landed in Green Bit, Law planned to turn over Caesar to Nami.

Doflamingo targeted Sunny after he realized Law's strategy was working and once Sunny was in view, Sanji was able to avoid him. Sanji was rendered immobile by Doflamingo, but Law intervened with Shambles and transferred Caesar himself. Sanji's group called both Luffy and Franky's group on a conference call after leaving Dressrosa, and Caesar listened in on their conversation. When Sanji chose to go back to Dressrosa after informing everyone of the conspiracy taking place in Dressrosa, Caesar was ecstatic. The arrival of the Big Mom Pirates stopped the return journey.

The crew then kept sailing towards Zou and prepared to shoot back at the Big Mom Pirates as going back to Dressrosa was out of the question. When the Sunny was going to be hit by cannon fire, Brook used his abilities to deflect it and the opposing ship was injured by the burning cannonballs. The group managed to get away from the Big Mom Pirates. The crew on the Thousand Sunny reached Zou the day after escaping the Big Mom Pirates. When they got to Zou, they saw Sheepshead chasing Tristan. Sanji's gang discovered Zou's destroyed city and the ravaged Mink Tribe after Tristan was saved and they had fled from Sheepshead.

Caesar was ecstatic to see that his Koro weapon had caused destruction more effectively than he was expecting. However, he was quickly defeated by Chopper. Sanji and Chopper used Caesar's heart as leverage, telling Caesar to neutralize the gas. Caesar agreed reluctantly and afterward helped Chopper heal the poisoned minks.

Zou Arc

Caesar created medicines for the Minks when he was living with the Mink Tribe. Then he got to know that the Big Mom Pirates had located him after seeing Pekoms and Capone Bege. Caesar and the other Straw Hats reacted with horror when Bege gave Sanji an invitation to a wedding Tea Party hosted by Big Mom. Caesar said that the Straw Hats would automatically become members of her crew if Sanji were to wed into her family. Bege swiftly escaped with Caesar and Sanji after being confronted by Nekomamushi.

Whole Cake Island

Caesar was held in a cage in Sanji's quarters on Big Mom's ship. Caesar shouted at his captors, reminding them of his reputation as a brilliant scientist, and demanded of them why Sanji was given special treatment. Caesar asked Sanji to give him back his heart when they landed on Whole Cake Island, Sanji gave it to Vito instead, much to Caesar's shock. Caesar was brought to Big Mom's castle, where he pretended his research was moving forward but was being slowed down by Luffy, Law, and the destruction of his lab at Punk Hazard. He was shocked when Big Mom told him that she had set up a new lab for him to carry out his study in and that she had given him two weeks to do it. Charlotte Perospero kept watch on him at the lab and threatened to turn him into candy if his study was not finished in two weeks.

When Luffy arrived at Whole Cake Island, Caesar recognized him right away, and he swore revenge on him and Law for the situation he was in. Bege then choked Caesar's heart, silencing him. Caesar offered to be the one to provide the alliance a way out once they had followed their plan. Once Big Mom was dead and all groups had made it out, Caesar, Luffy, and Bege decided that their partnership would end. Bege told Caesar to leave his body using the escape mirror outside the wedding location. Bege looked at Caesar taking part in the alliance's escape after the assassination plan was carried out before giving him the order to hide the mirror.

They released the Luffy clones into the area as soon as they heard the signal. Caesar and Charlotte Brûlée were left on their own after all the Luffy copies had been freed. Caesar carried Brûlée, who begged him and sped across the Mirro-World. Caesar told her to stop talking and that his heart was at stake. Caesar put up the escape mirror in front of the venue as soon as he left Mirro-World. As the assassination attempt had failed, Caesar grabbed the escape mirror and went inside a room. Caesar began to respond that the KX Launchers' failure was not his fault, but he was cut off as an angry Big Mom attacked the fort.

Bege made the decision to try returning to human form and have Caesar fly him away from the location while Big Mom began the attack. The Vinsmoke Family made the decision to fight Big Mom in order to create a window of opportunity for them to get away when Caesar strongly disagreed and they argued. Caesar and Bege were on the run but Perospero set up a candy wall in front of them. The candy wall was destroyed by Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji, allowing Caesar to pass through. When Katakuri stood in the way of Caesar's attempt to leave the area, Ichiji fought the Sweet Commander, allowing Caesar to leave.

While the castle was being destroyed, Caesar took Bege to the northwest of Whole Cake Island. Bege returned Caesar's heart after severing ties with Luffy's crew. Caesar happily left them behind once his heart was back in his hands. Later on, he got off Whole Cake Island. Caesar eventually went back to Whole Cake Island. He saw Ichiji and Vinsmoke Reiju break inside a lab to free their siblings. Caesar begged the Vinsmoke siblings for help in getting away. Caesar and the Vinsmokes managed to flee the fortress.

Caesar Clown is a very cruel, arrogant, and evil person who does not hesitate to harm anyone around him as long as it benefits him. He has a tendency to become an egomaniac and he takes pride in his inventions. He has maniacal tendencies due to his research about weapons that cause mass destruction and he is seen to have no emotions while performing his experiments on people. This brings out Caesar’s sadistic side. Caesar is seen drinking cocktails often. Caesar is seen lying to get away from situations and also is seen lying to his own subordinates. He is really ill-tempered and can get angry very easily.

He is really full of pride and gets happy when someone praises his work. Despite being prideful, Caesar does know that when a task is beyond his capabilities. He can get shocked and dumbfounded very easily on several occasions and can get scared easily when his life is in danger at any point. He always thinks about himself first.

Caesar Clown looks gaseous due to his devil fruit ability. His skin tone is very pale. He has long spiky black hair with brown eyes and two curly horns growing from the back of his head. He is tall and wears purple lipstick and dark makeup on his eyes, with a small flat nose and long thin eyebrows.

He has very thin arms. He is seen wearing a big light blue colored cat with ‘GAS’ printed in pink on each side of it. He wears yellow striped overalls which have orange stripes. He also shows off his hairy legs. He wears dark purple gloves with ‘CC’ in white written on them. As he is constantly in a gaseous state, he does not use shoes. When his feet solidify, he is seen wearing a simple pair of shoes. When he was young, Caesar had shorter hair with a bowl-cut hairstyle and wore a polka dot patterned shirt beneath his coat.

Caesar Clown is known to be very very cunning and clever. He is seen to be a fairly powerful fighter and is able to use his devil fruit abilities. He has great amounts of durability and is unfazed about the extreme temperature on Punk Hazard. He was able to even withstand an attack from Luffy. Caesar is a really skilled scientist and chemist. He is able to create dangerous biological and chemical weapons. These weapons were capable of mass destruction, one example of this is the creation of his pet, Smiley.

Caesar is the only person who knew how to produce SAD which he used to create the artificial devil fruit known as SMILE. The SMILE fruit was really unstable and only had a 10% of success rate. He was also able to turn humans into giants. He used to kidnap children and use them as guinea pigs for his experiments. He uses NHC10 which is a highly restricted drug. He is an expert in creating and designing weapons for biological wars.

Devil Fruit

Caesar Clown ate the Gasu Gasu no Mi which is a Logia-type Devil Fruit. This devil fruit allows him to create, control, and transform his body into various chemical gasses. He can even create poisonous gasses that are highly combustible. He can also remove oxygen from a certain area and he has also used his powers for a lot of experiments. He can also absorb other gasses which allow him to grow in size. When he is in his gaseous form, this allows him to fly and enter places that no normal human would.

Weapons

Caesar Clown is seen using a dual-barreled flintlock. He is also seen using other weapons along with his Devil Fruit abilities like red and blue castanets explosives. He also uses syringes to inject a muscle relaxant.

Monet

Caesar and Monet were coworkers and she was highly familiar with Caesar and aware of his true nature. Monet agreed with Caesar's command to give her heart to Law in return for Law's heart. Monet took her responsibility to guard Caesar and his test subjects seriously and prevented Luffy from capturing Caesar and prevented the Straw Hats and the G-5 Marines from taking the kidnapped children. Caesar accidentally killed Monet by stabbing her in the heart when he thought he had stabbed Smoker.

Vergo

Due to their lack of trust in Caesar, Vergo, and Joker infiltrated Caesar's organization with Monet to keep an eye on his behavior. In exchange, Caesar showed some trust in Vergo by giving him Law's heart. Vergo was then able to use it to render Law unconscious. Vergo was in charge of providing Caesar with test subjects and kidnapped kids for Caesar to experiment on, therefore Caesar respected him as a reliable friend.

Donquixote Doflamingo

Caesar used to work with Donquixote Doflamingo aka Joker and Caesar respected his position of power because he had to consult him before killing the G-5 Marines and Straw Hat Pirates. Doflamingo didn't believe Caesar, so he gave Vergo the order to send Monet undercover to keep an eye on Caesar's business. Doflamingo still respected Caesar in spite of this since he was the only researcher capable of creating SAD, which would help him make the SMILE. Doflamingo stated that he was willing to formally retire from the Seven Warlords of the Sea in order to ensure Caesar's safety since he had recognized him as a vital asset.

Baby 5 and Buffalo

Caesar is familiar with Baby 5 and Buffalo and appears to have enough confidence in them to think he will be saved when he sees them fighting. After they are defeated despite his belief in them, he chooses to leave them behind and head back to Dressrosa by himself, mocking Buffalo for failing to protect him.

Kaido

Kaido is able to get an army of Zoan-Devil Fruit users because of Caesar's capacity to produce SMILES. Caesar is aware of his importance to Kaido and that Kaido would be furious if his SMILE production is interrupted in any way.

Smiley

Smiley is Caesar’s pet. It appears that he merely regards Smiley only as his pet because he had no difficulty killing Smiley's body and promising to see him again. He talks about Smiley when he is with other people.

Vinsmoke Judge

Even when their group split up, Caesar and Judge continued to hate one another. Caesar particularly hated Judge's attitude in bossing others about. However, they did have a relationship when they both blamed Vegapunk. They joined forces and founded the NEO MADS organization.

Vegapunk

Smoker claims that Caesar was Vegapunk's former MADS coworker. They used to compete against one another, but Caesar was always viewed as inferior, which may be the primary cause of his hatred against Vegapunk. Caesar finally lost his respect for Vegapunk because all of his studies and innovations include unethical ideals and practices. The Lineage Factor Vegapunk developed has practical use in his manufacture of SAD. He did not appreciate it when Vegapunk got praised by Chopper instead of him.

Marines

Caesar has a hatred for the Marines. He was arrested, but he was able to get away. Caesar's cruel experiments throughout his time working for the organization had already caused a lot of frustration among his fellow employees. Caesar also felt Sakazuki would want his weapons of mass destruction, but said Sengoku was too sensitive to be afraid of them. Admiral Fujitora cleared Caesar of all charges after learning that he works closely with Doflamingo. However, because Doflamingo was defeated and captured, he no longer has that protection and is once more a wanted felon.

Straw Hat Pirates

Caesar was determined to get rid of the Straw Hat Pirates as soon as they found Punk Hazard. He was intrigued by Franky because he desired to have the laser system added to the cyborg's body. The Straw Hats wanted to catch Caesar with Law's help after learning about the evil experiments he had been doing. Caesar got angry at Luffy for all of the difficulties he had to go through.

Tony Tony Chopper

Caesar developed a unique relationship with Chopper. As Chopper has vast medical and scientific knowledge, he really establishes a working connection with him in order to assist him in improving his Rumble Balls for use in upcoming fights.

Trafalgar D. Water Law

Even though Caesar and Law were partners, they don't seem to be particularly honest with one another. Caesar only agreed to let Law stay on Punk Hazard provided Law gave him his heart. When Law called the Straw Hats, Caesar immediately believed that Law had betrayed him after learning of his connection to Luffy.

Charlotte Linlin

Caesar Clown had been hired by Big Mom to do research and develop a successful method of gigantification. When Big Mom questioned Caesar about it, he would just ask for more money to fund his research while really utilizing it for his personal profit because he knew that even he couldn't achieve such a goal. When her crew attacked the Thousand Sunny to retrieve him, Caesar warned the Straw Hats to keep him away from her because he believed she would learn about the stolen money. Caesar was able to convince her that his work had almost been done when Luffy and Trafalgar Law ruined it when she eventually found him.

Big Mom Pirates

Caesar was concerned he might die if he was given to Big Mom after he was kidnapped by Bege and the rest of the group. This concern increased after Sanji told Bege to grab Caesar and go. Charlotte Perospero tortured him by squeezing his heart and threatening to convert him into sweets if he didn't finish his research on Gigantification. Caesar was sent to work at the lab on Whole Cake Island.

Capone Bege

Caesar was extremely terrified of Bege and Pekoms on Zou since they both work for Big Mom, who he had been trying to avoid. Caesar quickly surrendered when Bege threatened to shoot him down, and was furious to learn that Bege was playing a bluff before being taken prisoner. Caesar promised him that because he had his heart, he wouldn't betray him. Bege used Caesar as a method of escape when the murder attempt on Big Mom was unsuccessful, despite his objections. Bege released Caesar and returned his heart after escaping the Whole Cake Chateau.

Former Subordinates

Caesar was previously viewed by Brownbeard and the other centaurs as a compassionate savior, and they blindly trusted him. Caesar, however, does not care about his men since he took advantage of their naive trust to test a new fuel on a few of them. Caesar declared Brownbeard to be an imbecile and gave the order to have him executed after the Straw Hats had captured him. Brownbeard was devastated to find that the guy he had so much faith in had deceived him. His cruelty even extends to ordering his subordinates to remove their protective gear in order to expose them to the deadly poison gas.

Kidnapped Children

Caesar has many kidnapped children who he sends to Punk Hazard via Vergo and tricks them all into believing that he is using them as subjects for scientific research to rescue the world. He is well respected by the kids, therefore they all choose to stay for his experiments. However, in reality, Caesar is using them as test subjects and doesn't care if they pass away. He used to use the children’s feelings against them.

Other Media

• In One Piece Premier Show 2014, Caesar was held captive on the Thousand Sunny but escaped to release his Shinokuni. He stopped when Mihawk appeared and cut it. In One Piece Premier Show 2018, Caesar acted as a tertiary antagonist, supplying the Bounties Pirates with poison gas bombs in an attempt to murder the kings at Levely.

• Caesar is one of two main antagonists of One Piece Live Attraction: Marionette, working together with Charlotte Cracker to exact revenge on the Straw Hat Pirates. He creates marionette gas to enslave the residents of Tongari Island, Sabo, and eventually, Luffy's crew. He and Cracker are defeated by a combined attack from Luffy and Sabo.
