History of Whole Cake Island

The island was mostly abandoned 61 years ago before the start of the series and consisted of forests, hills and natural fields. Mother Carmel relocated the Sheep’s House here after one of her wards, Charlotte Linlin, was banished from Elbaf, where Streusen lived. Linlin, however, made Caramel and the kids from the Sheep's House vanish by her own hands. Streusen went up to Linlin, and together, the two set out to transform the island into Linlin’s ideal heaven, and as Linlin gained strength, this became a reality.

Big Mom used the power of the Soru Soru no Mi to give life to many of the items and elements surrounding the island, and transformed a significant portion of the island’s natural resources into food.

During the current timeline, when Straw Hat Pirates visited the Fish-Man Island, Pekons and Tamago informed Big Mom that Fish-Man Island had not given her the necessary quantity of sweets as she was preparing for a Tea Party. She spoke to Luffy after he ate all the candy and she made the decision to take her grudge out on him.

During the main arc of the Whole Cake Island, three days before Charlotte Pudding and Sanji’s wedding, Big Mom gave in to one of her food cravings and destroyed Sweet City while looking for croquembouche. Before talking to Big Mom about him quitting her crew, Jinbe was able to get her some croquembouche. She consented as long as he spun the roulette wheel to lose anything in exchange, while the city was undergoing damage control. Jinbe withdrew from the agreement after realizing that all of his options would result in his death and the next day, this was revealed in the news.

The same day Pekoms was taken by the Fire Tank Pirates from Cacao Island and transported to their base to join them in their plot to kill Big Mom. Bege shot Pekons into the water after he refused to speak, preventing him from talking any further. After Jinbe learnt of the assassination plot, the Sun Pirates were forced to leave Pekoms bound on the shore.

Meanwhile, Caesar was forced to continue his gigantification experiments in a new lab that Big Mom had Charlotte Perospero build, and she gave him two weeks to finish it before she executed him.

When Sanji Retrieval Team reached Whole Cake Island, Big Mom set Charlotte Brûlée and her friends from the Seducing Woods up as a trap and engaged them in battle. Later, she dispatched Sweet Commander Charlotte Crackers to assure their destruction. Cracker battled Luffy and was eventually defeated after an 11-hour long battle, sent by Luffy soaring towards Sweet City, while Nami had defeated all the Seducing Woods homies with Big Mom’s Vivre Card, putting them all under her own control.

Due to Cracker’s defeat, Sweet City was placed under lockdown and an army was assembled to battle the Straw Hats. While this was happening, the Vinsmoke Family traveled to Sweet City to meet with Big Mom, and as they were leaving the city, they came across Nami and Luffy. Sanji defeated Luffy there while pretending to be loyal to his family, abandoning him outside Sweet City as Big Mom’s army advanced. The troops eventually defeated Nami and Luffy and took them prisoners.

While the Vinsmoke Family met with Big Mom and Pudding, Luffy and Nami were imprisoned inside a book in the Prisoner Library. Sanji consented to marry Pudding as long as Big Mom consented to free Luffy and Nami; Big Mom agreed to this, nevertheless, she never intended to keep her word. Pedro and Brook broke into the Whole Cake Chateau in the meantime as they sought to nab Big Mom’s Poneglyphs.

Brook snuck into the Room of Treasure and transcribed the Poneglyphs while Pedro fought Tamago in the courtyard while battling Big Mom’s guards in the Chateau as a diversion. Big Mom attacked Brook after learning of his presence and eventually defeated him; however, Brook was able to obtain copies of the Ponegylphs. Meanwhile, Pedro defeated Tamago by detonating numerous bombs hidden in his jacket.

After being taken prisoner into Brûlée’s Mirro-World and being pursued and imprisoned by Brûlée, Chopper and Carrot unleashed a plan to eliminate Brûlée and her minions. They traveled to Mirro-World with Brûlée and Diesel serving as their prisoner escorts, and they located Pedro while searching for their fellow comrades, and pulled him in as he set off the explosives.

In the meantime, Jinbe freed Luffy and Nami by breaking inside the Whole Cake Chateau and ambushing Opera at the Prisoner Library. While Nami and Jinbe fought armies of Big Mom Pirates until Chopper and Carrot carried them into the Mirro-World, Luffy went on ahead to warn Sanji. At the same time, Big Mom used Brook as a plaything and eventually slept with him, but the crew somehow managed to free him from Big Mom’s hold. Sanji, who had learned that the Big Mom Pirates had planned to slaughter his family at the wedding, eventually returned to Luffy after a lot of convincing.

The Straw Hats met with the Fire Tank Pirates that evening to form an alliance in order to assassinate Big Mom and save the Vinsmoke Family, while the citizens of the Whole Cake Island were busy preparing for the wedding. Before the Big Mom Pirates could kill the Vinsmokes during the morning tea party and wedding ceremony on top of the Chateau, Luffy burst out from the Wedding Cake and invaded the venue.

During the chaos, Big Mom suffered a crisis and lost strength as a result of Brook shattering the portrait of Mother Caramel. Within a few moments, the Big Mom Pirates besieged the Straw Hat-Fire Tank alliance after Big Mom successfully foiled the Fire Tank’s assassination attempt by yelling out loud. Even though the Vinsmoke Family joined their side and they attempted a quick escape, Big Mom and her crew routed the alliance.

However, while some of her wedding guests fought over it, the Tamatebako suddenly fell off the Chateau, causing a mass explosion at its base that brought down the entire building. The Big Mom Pirates prepared to pursue the enemy alliance after they flew off to the northwest of the island after Streusen transformed the venue into soft cake, ultimately protecting everyone from falling.

Following the dissolution of the alliance, the Sanji Retrieval Team ran into the Seducing Woods. Big Mom developed a craving for wedding cake as the Big Mom Pirates planned their next move, which caused her eating disorder to act up. Perospero lied that the Straw Hats had a backup cake, which led Big Mom to follow the Straw Hats into the Seducing Woods as she went on the rampage through Sweet City.

A few of them joined Big Mom in her pursuit of the Straw Hats when the Big Mom Pirates divided their army to take on the alliance groups. Nami managed to use Big Mom’s homie Zeus to unleash a powerful lightning bolt on the Big Mom Pirates, however, Big Mom remained unaffected.

The Sanji Retrieval Team arrived at the Thousand Sunny on the coast, where they engaged in combat with the Big Mom Pirates posted there. The ship was captured by Perospero and a blockade was sent out to destroy it. Meanwhile, Pedro seriously hurt Perospero in a suicide explosion, which freed the Sunny, and allowed the Straw Hats to use Coup de Burst to fly past the barricade and escape from Whole Cake Island.

The Straw Hat-Fire Tank alliance members were being pursued by the majority of the Big Mom Pirates but some remained in the island to coordinate their forces as directed by Mont-d’Or. Mont-d’Or was shocked to learn that the territorial sea slugs had vanished and he later added the Sun Pirates to their list of enemies. Soon, when the news of Luffy and Katakuri’s fight in the Mirro-World spread, Stussy told Mont-d’Or that the chateau’s fall was due to the tamatebako that the Straw Hats gave to Big Mom.

Mont-d’Or boasted to Morgans about the might of the Big Mom Pirates as the Straw Hats’ rendezvous on Cacao Island approached since he thought they had no chance of escaping. He gave his army the order to keep the Den Den Mushi active to stay informed while the Big Mom Pirates approached the Thousand Sunny.

Soon, Niwatori had his suspicions verified when the Vinsmokes arrived at Cacao Island to aid the Straw Hats in fleeing. He discovered the true fate of Nusstorte’s chase squad and attempted to get in contact with them. At the same time, the news of Katakuri’s defeat at the hands of Luffy spread out in the Totto Land which shocked everyone in Big Mom Pirates’ crew.

As things on Cacao Island got intense, Mont-d’Or pleaded with Peropero to let him know how Big Mom was doing. After that, he learnt that Morgans and Stussy had left, and he ordered his crew to capture them so that Morgans wouldn't have time to report the recent events in Totto Land.

In some time, Big Mom devoured the cake and the residents of Totto Land rejoiced when they heard that she had calmed down. The Straw Hats managed to escape despite Big Mom Pirates’ best efforts to stop them.

As the news of Straw Hat Pirates’ recent activities spread across the world, Big Mom was infuriated by the news of her defeat.

Reiju and Ichiji broke into the lab and released their siblings shortly after Vinsmoke Niji and Yongi were brought to the island for testing.

Geography and Architecture of Whole Cake Island

The island is quite big and it used to be a regular one with various round hills up until around 62 years ago. Charlotte Linlin and Streusen worked to fulfill the former’s dream, which was passed down from Carmel, and because of the gigantic cake structures built there, the island was named “Whole Cake Island.” Visitors are frequently in awe of the island at first glance due to the size of the buildings.

There are enormous poles in the shape of candles atop the largest central building, the Whole Cake Chateau, making it appear like a birthday cake which is even depicted as lit, although it is unknown if their “flames” are real and the anime implies that they are trees. The majority of the structures appear to be covered in icing. In general, interiors of buildings have the appearance of being partially constructed of icing.

The island’s southwest shore is at least covered in meringue, a type of hardened whipped cream. It was shown that the island’s east bay has a coral-like structure similar to that on Fish-Man Island.

Weather of Whole Cake Island

The island’s distinctive meteorological phenomena of edible cotton candy snow may be caused by the unusual purplish and pinkish clouds that occasionally cover the sky above it.

Locations at Whole Cake Island

There are various unique locations in the Whole Cake Island. The most famous locations in the island are listed below:

Sweet City

The capital of Whole Cake Island and thus, of all of Totto Land is Sweet City. It is roughly located in the middle of the island, and northwest of Whole Cake Chateau. Some of the buildings are alive, and its structures are built of edible materials like candy or biscuits provided by the Minister of Biscuits. Some of them also include “BM” or “BIG MOM,” which is a clear reference to the island’s queen.

A juice river appears to be connected to the ocean or Lake Aprico, that runs through the town. A route connects the Whole Cake Chateau to Lake Aprico, and it appears as though living hills encircle Sweet City. As in all of Totto Land, the city’s residents seem to be fairly diverse. Also, no matter the weather, one can always see some balloons with frosting drifting over the town.

The city was drenched in cream and chunks of sponge cake after the chateau collapsed.

Whole Cake Chateau

The three-story, enormous Whole Cake Chateau was Big Mom’s castle and the biggest cake building in Sweet City. It dwarfed practically all the other buildings and landmarks on the island and it had a total of ten stories (actually being larger than Sweet City as a whole). It was roughly in the middle of the island, surrounded by Sweet City.

Seducing Woods

The Seducing Woods are located between Sweet City’s outskirts and Whole Cake Island’s southwest coast. The forest is somewhat unusual, being mostly edible and full of homies, such as trees, lollipops, cakes and flowers, who may be seen chatting and singing with each other happily, in keeping the island’s theme. More specifically, the forest has a waterfall of apple juice, a river of melon juice and Brûlée’s house next to it.

The river appears to be a home to a talking crocodile, whose job is to destroy a certain doughnut bridge heading to the coast. Pound had previously been buried there before Charlotte Cracker arrived and dug him out. Kingbaum, the biggest tree homie, was in charge of the forest. According to the anime, Charlotte Linlin’s soul was what gave the forest its life.

In spite of its outward appearance, the forest has a strong sense of malice. There are skeletons of previous wanderers lying around and the trees and other homies constantly move to block off exit routes and continually change the forest’s layout to confuse their visitors. They regard this as a “Game of Death,” singing happily about what those visitors’ merciless deaths might look like.

In fact, no matter how powerful the intruders are, the Homies under Baum’s leadership will not let them go. Also, a high magnetic field interference prevents people from using Log Poses to escape (seemingly due to strange clocks secured on some tree homies, whose clock hands spin uncontrollably).

Brûlée’s House

Located in the Seducing Woods and the Mirro-World, Brûlée’s house has a giant mirror in the center that serves as a type of portal between the two worlds. It is situated next to an apple juice waterfall on the side facing Seducing Woods.

It consists of a watermill that is turned on by the waterfall that was mentioned earlier, walls made of biscuits, and a huge roof with a black cat figure perched on top of it to fit Brûlée’s witch concept. Its interior has mirrors covering the walls. Brûlée uses a big cooking pot in the middle of it to boil her prisoners.

Lake Aprico

Lake Aprico is a large lake behind the Whole Cake Chateau (east in the anime), which empties into the sea. Only Big Mom’s associate crews (and those who are in the process of becoming one) are permitted access to the port, which is guarded by two Tartes right at the entrance. The Germa Kingdom’s current capital is located in Lake Aprico. Its name makes it sound like it might include apricot juice.

Caesar Clown’s Replica Laboratory

A copy of Caesar Clown’s Punk Hazard research facility is located on the Whole Cake Island. After obtaining the designs, Big Mom had her first son, Charlotte Peropero, replicate the high-tech laboratory using only sugar, and to prevent risks and hazards, she reinforced the entire structure with steel. It can be found somewhere near the Whole Cake Chateau.

The building resembles Caesar’s original laboratory and is equipped with all necessary tools but instead of “PH-006” and other codes, several towers and walls are marked with “WCI”, “WHOLE CAKE ISLAND”, and “SWEET.”

Caesar was forced to work there in order to complete the gigantification medicine that Big Mom had ordered him to create (which he believes is impossible), but he was able to work out a deal with Capone Bege for his release in exchange for his assistance with the murder plot against Big Mom.

Northeastern Coast

The Northeastern Coast is the ideal location in the Whole Cake Island to “make a body disappear’, according to Capone Bege. This is caused by a big gang of incredibly dangerous and wild sharks known as dots that are swimming in the water close to the coast and will prey upon anyone unfortunate enough to enter their waters. They will be reduced to nothing once they enter this coast.

Fire Tank Pirates Hideout

In the northwest corner of Whole Cake Island, beneath the shadow of a gigantic dark cake building, was the Fire Tank Pirates Hideout. It was the location of the meeting between Capone Bege and his gang where they decided to turn against the Big Mom Pirates and kill Big Mom herself.

Additionally, this is where they meet with possible allies. After the aborted assassination attempt, the crew defected from the Big Mom Pirates and left the base and the island.

The base had a big meeting room, two wardrobes; one for men and other for women. The base also had a kitchen and washrooms.

Eastern Bay

The Sun Pirates’ hideout, built to replicate the terrain of Fish-Man Island, is located in the Whole Cake Island’s Eastern Bay. It is also the location of Pekons’ medical treatment following his rescue by a fisherman after being shot by Capone Bege off the northeastern coast.

Sheep’s House

Mother Carmel’s Sheep House was relocated on the island following Linlin’s rampage during the 12-day fast preceding the Winter Solstice Festival. Its precise position and state at the moment are not clear.

Inhabitants of Whole Cake Island

The majority of Big Mom’s roughly 80 children, as well as her grandkids, reside on Whole Cake Island together with her crew and allies, which comprise people of all races (aside from giants, lunarians and one unidentified race). One of her ex-husbands lived on the island.

The island is home to a very diverse range of anthropomorphic singing creatures and items, mostly food, that's to the Soru Soru no Mi’s abilities. Even living objects with names use the noun and not the real name; yet, they are not confined to only pronouncing their names and are capable of rational thinking. All of them appear to have a habit of repeating their noun name by singing or saying it in a musical manner. The anthropomorphic “incarnations” of Linlin’s soul roam freely, who gather souls and carry out duties for their master.

Some of the famous inhabitants of Whole Cake Island are mentioned below:

Charlotte Linlin

Charlotte Linlin, better known by her alias “Big Mom”, is the captain of the Big Mom Pirates and was originally the sole female member of the Four Emperors who ruled the New World. She is the matriarch of the huge Charlotte Family. Her main residence is Whole Cake Chateau in Whole Cake Island.

Charlotte Brûlée

Charlotte Brûlée is the eighth child and 19th member of the Charlotte Family. She serves as a Big Mom Pirates officer. Brûlée has her own mansion in the Whole Cake Island.

Charlotte Cracker

The “Thousand Arms” Charlotte Cracker is the tenth son and fifteenth child of the Charlotte Family. He also holds the position of Totto Land’s Minister of Biscuits and is one of Big Mom Pirates’ Three Sweet Commanders.

Charlotte Mont-d’Or

Charlotte Mont-d’Or better known by his alias “Scribe”, is the 30th child and 19th son of the Charlotte Family and a Big Mom Pirates Officer. He oversees Cheese Island as Totto Land’s Minister of Cheese.

Charlotte Pudding

Charlotte Pudding is the 35th daughter and 76th child of the Charlotte Family. She is a hybrid of a human and a Three-Eye Tribe member as well as an officer of the Big Mom Pirates.

Charlotte Perospero

Charlotte Perospero is the eldest child of the Charlotte Family and an officer of the Big Mom Pirates. He also oversees Candy Island as the Minister of Candy for Totto Land.

Trivia

  • The island shares the similar fairy tale as fantasy book concept and is the heart of the Big Mom Pirates’ New World territory.

  • The Tulgey Wood from Lewis Carroll's most well-known book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is a reference of the design of the Seducing Woods and its disorienting qualities.

  • The Disney film Snow White, in which the title character rushes through a dark forest and imagines the trees and other plants as monsters attempting to harm her, may possibly be a reference.

  • Similar to the Cheshire Cat, Sanji appears in the forest and then vanishes.

  • Whole Cake Island’s landscape is reminiscent of the garden with the sentient flowers from Carroll’s sequel Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There.

  • Walt Disney’s creations and the Silly Symphonies series of animated films, particularly the 1932 film Flowers and Trees (which features a forest of sentient plants) and 1953’s The Cookie Carnival, appears to have had a significant effect (involving a city made of sweets inhabited by candy people).
