Hocker had to leave the shop one fateful day, and he charged Chouchou with the task of protecting the shop in his absence. Chouchou was very loyal to Hocker and continued to protect the shop even after his master's death. During the Buggy Pirates' occupation of Orange Town, Chouchou bore witness to the destruction of his home and the death of his master. Despite this, he remained at the pet shop, guarding it day and night. Luffy helps Chouchou by defeating Mohji and Richie and giving Chouchou the last surviving piece of his pet shop.
