Den Den Mushi are a class of telepathic snail used for worldwide voice and/or visual communication. Different species of Den Den Mushi exist, each with a particular kind of signal. The Den Den Mushi have the ability to communicate over great distances, through the use of electronic signals. They also have the amazing ability to mimic speech.

For many generations, people have taken advantage of these capabilities by attaching dials, receivers, and other additional parts to these animals, turning them into long-distance communication devices.

Habitat

The native territory of Den Den Mushi is unknown, but it seems that they can live anywhere that regular snails can. They have also lived in grasslands and forests. Fukaboshi was spotted using a Den Den Mushi underwater, suggesting that at least some breeds of the animal are amphibious. But they are not usually adapted to the harsh cold. Den Den Mushi do not seem to be nearly as widespread to people as actual telephones are.

Though they are quite common on Marine bases and vessels, very few have been observed in the hands of journalists. The Straw Hat Pirates were the last to be known to possess one until they got the Thousand Sunny at Water 7.

Operation

Just like an actual phone, the snail will create a telepathic connection with the snail whose mechanism corresponds to the number dialled. Even more complex mechanisms may enable them to send and copy images and documents, just like a fax machine would in the real world.

Den Den Mushi are happy to be used and raised because they have an abundance of food available to them. In order to return them to the wild, their accessories can be taken off at any time and don't cause any harm

A Den Den Mushi makes a purururu sound upon receiving a signal. When Den Den Mushi receives an S.O.S. call, they cry aloud. But until they actually pick up and speak with the person putting in the signal, the caller is not informed about what happened. It can choose to blend in with its surroundings or take on the characteristics of the person speaking or its owner, depending on how it feels.

Furthermore, the two subjects could communicate with one another through a third party. They are able to receive warning signals from Territorial Sea Slugs in addition to signals from each other. They can also transmit sounds that are in the vicinity, like gunshots or shattered glass.

By nature, Den Den Mushi is extremely sluggish and prefers to sleep when not in use. Furthermore, it doesn't seem like they are intelligent enough to understand any of the words they convey.

When Oda was questioned about the Den Den Mushi's ability to switch their ring tone he confirmed that it can be changed to a "silent" mode and whether it had a silent mode. But because they are living things, they need training to be able to use this power.

Its volume is decided by how well they are trained and what they eat. A Black Den Den Mushi can be used to intercept Den Den Den Mushi signals. A Den Den Mushi will emit an electrical buzzing sound when it is taken over.

The dialling mechanism and receiver of the standard Den Den Mushi are built into its shell, and it is about the size of a typical house cat. The color and pattern of the specimens differ greatly, and they are frequently modified to represent their owners.

Den Den Mushi are usually left still on desks and similar surfaces because of their size. But in times of need, many have come up with creative ways to carry them along with their attached parts.

Variants

Many Den Den Mushi variations also exist, with abilities that are not found in standard Den Den Mushi. These are typically much rarer, and they play a crucial role in both the Underworld and the Marine world.

Audio-Based Variants

Baby Den Den Mushi

Many people prefer a Baby Den Den Mushi for portable communication because it is a smaller version of the standard species and can fit in one hand or even be worn like a wristwatch. Its signal, however, is not strong enough to be utilized for inter-island calls and is weaker than that of a standard snail. They can be used as speakers to project the user's voice across the space.

Black Den Den Mushi

A distinct species of Den Den Mushi called the Black Den Den Mushi likes to "eavesdrop" on other snails' signals rather than engage in direct communication, enabling one to hear their calls. In order to repeat anything it intercepts later, it can also memorize it. The Marines most frequently "wiretap" calls made by pirates or other outlaws using Black Den Den Mushi.

White Den Den Mushi

Any Den Den Mushi can have the White Den Den Mushi attached to it to encrypt the user's calls because it produces signals that prevent the Black Den Den Mushi from listening in on conversations. It takes time to set one up, and it's not the best for emergency calls. These kinds of Den Den Mushi are used by the Revolutionary Army to prevent Marines from listening in on talks.

Horned Den Den Mushi

The transmissions from other neighboring Den Den Mushi can be jammed by the Horned Den Den Mushi. The duration and range of the jamming are unknown. A member of the Fire Tank Pirates used this species of Den Den Mushi for the first time as part of the Retrieval Team-Fire Tank Alliance's scheme to overthrow Big Mom. When they work, their eyes flash red and emit a beeping sound with each flash.

Earpiece Den Den Mushi

This variant of Den Den Mushi is a tiny snail with its shell located beneath its head. The snail is held up to the user's ear, with no external speaker or microphone.

Visual-Based Variants

Visual Den Den Mushi

The kind of Den Den Mushi that transmits images instead of sounds is known as the Visual Den Den Mushi. Cameko is a young Visual Den Den Mushi, they are unable to display signals from other Visual Den Den Mushi at this time.

They have the capacity to both store and send signals to their adult form, known as the Proko, in the form of pictures and videos. The Proko is able to both project and send the visual content that the Cameko records onto bigger video screens.

They can be carried by one person due to their small size compared to the adult Visual Den Den Mushi, and they have the ability to take flash photos by using their eyes to produce light bursts. Regardless of the display method, they aren't limited to displaying a single feed and are frequently seen displaying signals from multiple Camekos simultaneously.

They can project the video onto monitors using their eyes or wires that are connected to a display. Proko can transmit their frequencies between two places that are rather close to each other.

Projector Den Den Mushi

A Projector Den Den Mushi can view an image with one eye and project the same image at a larger scale using its other eye, much like some Proko.

Surveillance Den Den Mushi

The Monitoring Den Den Mushi is a Visual Den Den Mushi used to keep an eye on things. Several Cameko are installed specific spots throughout the given area. All of them are linked to a single Proko, which is linked to a device that generates video feeds for a group of monitors.

When the Proko detects suspicious activity, the Cameko will send a signal to it, causing its red eyes to alternately flash and emit a buzzing sound to warn those observing the monitors.

Self-Propelled Visual Den Den Mushi

Unlike the usual Den Den Mushi, which simply sits in one spot, the Self-Propelled Den Den Mushi is a type of Den Den Mushi that, moves around on its own. They have attachments that let them project what they see onto a monitor and are the same size as a Proko.

Virtual Den Den Mushi

A type of Visual Den Den Mushi that doubles as a virtual reality headset is the Virtual Den Den Mushi. The snail is connected to a pair of goggles and rests atop the user's head.

Livestream Den Den Mushi

The Livestream Den Den Mushi was introduced in the One Piece Film: Red. Uta streamed her live concert to a global audience using this Den Den Mushi. It was created by Vegapunk himself and is considered a SSG research.

Special Variants

Golden Den Den Mushi

As it is a very rare breed, the only "accessory" for the Golden Den Den Mushi is a single button on top of its shell that, when pressed, instantly transmits the signal to its Silver counterpart. Its function is to command the infamous Buster Call attack by the World Government. As per Spandam's claim, only Marines holding the rank of Admiral or above are authorized to utilize a Golden Den Den Mushi.

Silver Den Den Mushi

Another variant of this known as the Silver Den Den Mushi acts as the Golden Den Den Mushi counterpart's receiving line, and when it receives a signal, it produces a loud vibrating alarm sound.
