Duval was born a year before Gold Roger was put to death. His unattractive looks led many to believe that the Great Pirate Age had 'cursed' him. At first, Duval was a local mafia figure on an island. Duval's life took a negative turn after the Straw Hat Pirates' fresh bounty announcement and the incident in Enies Lobby. Sanji's father sent all kinds of personnel to find the man he believed to be his son because of the close resemblance between his face and the wanted poster of "Black Leg" Sanji.
These people, who all mistook Duval for Sanji, included well-known bounty hunters and Marines from Marine Headquarters. Duval was once imprisoned in an iron cage, but Motobaro, who later served as his mount, managed to free him. Duval tried to reason with them but was unable to convince them, so he was compelled to put on an iron mask to hide himself from his attackers. Eventually, Duval arrived in the Sabaody Archipelago, where he created the Flying Fish Riders kidnapping gang despite having reservations about it to further secure himself and get revenge on Sanji for ruining his life.
His group gradually grew in influence among the local gangs, including Duval's. Duval continued to conceal his face behind his mask for safety even though he and his group were the most dreaded. To ultimately exact revenge on Sanji, he and his men decided to keep assaulting pirate ship after pirate ship until they located Sanji.
Duval then ordered the Macro Pirates to kidnap Hatchan to lure Sanji's allies Camie and Pappag into a trap and eventually get revenge on them. The plan was successful, and Duval's base was where Luffy and his group encountered the Flying Fish Riders and Macro's crew. Hatchan was eventually freed, and he then beat Macro and his men. One of Luffy's attacks during the battle caused Duval's mask to fly away, revealing his face for the first time. Duval then sobbed out his tragic fate for the coincidence that his image resembled the hideous Wanted poster he had been marked with.
Using an iron net that the Flying Fish Riders had sent in, he attempted to drown Sanji. They then attempted to drop a large anchor on the Thousand Sunny but were stopped by their newest weapon, the "Roar Cannon," which also destroyed a portion of his base. He even attempted to charge Motobaro into the Straw Hats, but Luffy stopped it, terrified him by unintentionally utilizing his Haoshoku Haki, and caused it to pass out as it fled. When Sanji emerged from the water, he rearranged Duval's face in a similar way to how he did to Wanze, making him look quite attractive.
Duval rode out to return to his tranquil country life as the Straw Hats sailed off to the Sabaody Archipelago after briefly thanking them and giving them his Den Den Mushi's phone information so they could contact him in case they needed assistance. He was helping the Straw Hat team find Camie after being contacted by Sanji. They soon arrived at Grove 1, where the auction was being conducted. When Luffy created a big scene by hitting Saint Charlos, the party came together and devised a plan to flee while he and two other pirate captains, Eustass Kid, and Trafalgar Law, removed the Marines off the road.
Peterman was also assaulted by Duval for grabbing Camie and taking her purse. The Straw Hat Pirates reached Grove 13 once more as Duval gave Camie's bag back and left once more as soon as the area was safe for them to flee. It seems that he was also charged for caring for the Thousand Sunny until the Straw Hats arrived, but they had not yet done so since Bartholomew Kuma had forcibly removed them from the Sabaody Archipelago.
The Coffee Monkeys tried to take the Thousand Sunny, but Duval stopped them. Despite at first confusing and speaking about not letting anybody touch a little girl in his presence, Duval pledged with a high-sounding voice that he would never permit any thief to lay a finger on the Straw Hats' ship. When Camie came and complimented him, Duval attempted to wink again but failed as usual and was ignored. When Shakky mentioned how important it was for them to safeguard the Thousand Sunny, Duval began to respond that he and his men would defend the ship against all foes, but one of them cut him off by telling him that Kuma was on the island.
Duval prepared his harpoon gun and his soldiers to battle the Warlord after a brief misunderstanding involving bears. However, Kuma's task was to safeguard the Thousand Sunny. Kuma takes over as the guardian after a skirmish with the Marines left Duval and Hatchan injured.
After a gap of two years, Sanji found Duval in Shakky's Rip-off Bar with his wounds from his time guarding the Thousand Sunny healed. He would require a year to recuperate, it was said. Sanji praised him for guarding the ship but immediately brushed aside his heroic tales in search of details concerning Nami. Duval then admired his good looks as he gazed at himself in the mirror. In the area of Fish-Man Island and the Sabaody Archipelago, Duval is the head of the Rosy Life Riders, who were once the Flying Fish Riders abduction gang. He was at first hostile towards the Straw Hats, but now he is one of their allies.
Duval decided to conceal his face behind an iron mask to shield himself from the numerous Marines and bounty hunters who mistakenly identified him as Sanji when the wanted poster was released. Duval believed Sanji had done him a big injustice since he had left him with mental and bodily scars from his pursuit and the inability to leave the house in the daytime without hiding. He believed that the chef had taken his life and that Sanji had caused him a serious injury. Since that time, Duval has had a bitter hatred against the Straw Hats and has vowed to exact revenge for his misfortune.
Any mention of Sanji sets Duval off, and until he is calmed down, he will ramble about his hate and intended retaliation for Sanji. Duval's hatred for Sanji is intense. He is also fairly slow because he never considered just changing his looks during the whole time he had a grudge against Sanji. Even till the chef disfigured his face with a flurry of kicks, Duval tended to this deep hate of Sanji. Duval fell in love with the job the moment he saw the results after Sanji changed his face.
This new look was not only a sign that he would no longer be pursued, but it was also quite attractive. His entire perspective on life altered as a result, and all of his old resentments were washed away. He unfortunately developed a very egotistical and narcissistic personality as a result of his features. Since he views the Straw Hat pirates as friends, he constantly tries to help them out when they require it, such as by finding Camie when she was abducted and keeping a close eye out for anybody trying to take the Thousand Sunny.
Duval is a very big guy who earned the nickname Iron Mask Duval by first appearing with a big mask with long red tufts connected to it. He looks to be around 2.5 times the average person's height when standing. His limbs and legs are thin, but his torso is muscular. He wears an open leather jacket, black trousers, cowboy boots, and a long fur cloak in addition to his armored head and shoulders.
Surprisingly, Duval resembled Sanji's original wanted poster under his iron mask. He was an identical replica of the drawing but for the direction of his eyebrow, which spirals downward instead of upward like Sanji's. He had a lot of issues with the Marines and bounty hunters because of his appearance, so he had to cover his face to protect himself. Due to this, Duval sustained several wounds, the most severe of which is a scar on his back that he claims is very painful.
Due to the beginning of the Golden Age of Pirates, his parents even thought he was an unattractive kid because he had this identical look since birth. When Duval confronted Sanji to exact retribution, Sanji's kicks caused his entire face structure to be altered. This aggressive and rough procedure had a completely successful outcome. Duval's whole face had been transformed by Sanji's kicks into a gorgeous one that was nearly entirely different from the one he had before.
Duval has amazing strength since he can use only one hand to break bundles of his metal harpoons. Duval is a very competent fighter, as evidenced by his ability to evade capture by formidable Marines and notorious bounty hunters. In defending the Thousand Sunny, he kicked away three Coffee Monkeys with ease after easily defeating Peterman, a big man and the leader of the Hound Pets. Along with the Rosy Life Riders, Hatchan, and Bartholomew Kuma, he was able to defend the Thousand Sunny from the Marines for the entire two years.
He is not as talented as Sanji, as evidenced by the fact that the latter instantly defeated him when Duval challenged him to a duel. Despite not wanting to be in the business in the first place, he has extensive expertise in abduction, and he and his crew rely on well-coordinated attacks to defeat otherwise formidable adversaries whom they could not defeat on their own. In addition to working as a slaver, he has experience in human auctioning in the Sabaody Archipelago.
Duval generally fights in battle with harpoon guns. He has two different kinds of harpoon guns: a little one that looks like a rifle and a big one that looks like a hand-held multiple rocket launcher. The compact rifle-shaped harpoon cannon appears to be simple to load with harpoons, and it can hold and fire four rounds simultaneously. The larger magazines carrying several harpoons are needed to load the rocket launcher-shaped harpoon cannon, which can, however, fire all of its ammunition simultaneously to provide a deadlier onslaught than the smaller rifle-shaped one.
Duval is a stand-alone figure, yet he is not the only one. His guys are especially devoted to him. They felt sympathy for their leader's suffering while Duval was experiencing his awful position with his original look. They joined in with their leader's excitement at his new appearance and even used the moniker "Handsome" which he later adopted for himself.
At first, Duval held Sanji accountable for his misfortunes, even going so far as to offer a prize for their arrest. When he and Sanji eventually met, the whole scenario made them irritable with one another. Duval's face structure was entirely altered by Sanji to make him appear more attractive, and the commander of the Flying Fish Riders thereafter adopted a friendlier approach towards the chef and his crew. He began referring to Sanji as "Young Master" and "Master Black Leg" on occasion. During the Straw Hat Pirates' compelled two-year exile from Sabaody, he even went so far as to guard their ship from any adversaries. Despite his gratitude, Duval's newfound narcissistic adoration for himself still irritates Sanji.
After the timeskip, Duval and his team are lying on a bed in Shakky's Rip-off Bar with their wounds bandaged and IVs hooked up.
