Shiki the Golden Lion learned that Gol D. Roger, an occasional rival, knew how to use an ancient weapon. He gathered his fleet and met Roger in the New World’s seas. He offered Roger a place as his right hand man and said that with Roger’s weapon and his military might, they could control the world.

Immediately declining the offer, Roger explained that he had no desire to conquer anything because, without freedom, being a pirate would be meaningless. Roger said that he would destroy Shiki and his fleet when Shiki inquired whether he wanted to be killed. The battle was started by Roger firing his ships’ cannon at one of the Golden Lion Pirates fleet’s ships.

The Roger Pirates put up a strong battle against their opponents even though they only had one ship and were outnumbered against Shiki’s fleet. A sudden cyclone struck the area as they were engaged in battle, destroying half of Shiki’s fleet and giving Roger the upper hand. Additionally, Shiki had a piece of a steering wheel caught in his hard head at this point, forcing him to flee. Even though the battle was ferociously won by Roger, Shiki still respected him.
