Emeth in One Piece

Emeth's appearance in the anime.

Emeth (Emet in English) is a fictional character in the Japanese manga/anime series One Piece, created by Eiichiro Oda.

Emet, mostly known as the Iron Giant, is a robot made sometime around the time of the Void Century and is a friend of Joy Boy. It has generally been de-powered ever since, except for two known reactivations, the first of which happened 200 years ago when it almost attacked Mary Geoise.

Later, it was stolen and stored on Egghead, where it now serves to protect Vegapunk's internal broadcast of pre-recorded footage. Emet powered back up and joined the Straw Hat Pirates in their fight against the Five Elders after listening to Monkey D. Luffy's Drums of Liberation.

Emeth’s History

Background

Emet was created roughly 900 years ago, before the present events. It eventually got to know Joy Boy and joined him as a friend. Joy Boy eventually informed Emet that he wouldn't be there to defend him in a particular situation, so he sealed his Supreme King Haki inside Emet's chassis to keep him and the people he wished to protect safe in case such a need arose. Knowing that a piece of Joy Boy would continue to exist inside him long after he was gone brought Emet joy.

Attack on Mary Goise

Emet abruptly showed up and attacked Mary Geoise 200 years ago, but he ran out of energy before he could do any harm. A team of scientists was then directed by the World Government to destroy it, but Jaygarcia Saturn covertly gave them instructions to conceal and examine it instead. Vegapunk ultimately got its possession.

Egghead Arc (Final Saga)

During their time on Egghead, Luffy, Chopper, Jinbe, and Bonney accidentally discovered Emet. Luffy decided it was the kind of robot that moved on its own after failing to climb inside it. Then, Vegapunk, who found himself trapped when bending through the giant's outer armor, interrupted them. Then, the scientist explained its history to the crew.

When Luffy used Gear 5 during his fight with Kizaru, the Drums of Liberation reached the Iron Giant, causing its eyes to light up. Later, the Drums of Liberation caused the Iron Giant to begin moving as Luffy reactivated his Gear 5 form.

Emet was wide awake when he walked through the Buster Call's flames and apologized to Joy Boy in his head. Marines surrounded the island and tried to bombard the Iron Giant as it continued to move across Egghead. It wasn't affected by the intense bombing and continued on its course without any difficulties. Later, York learned that Emet was guarding the Den Den Mushi that Vegapunk was using to spread his message globally.

Except for Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro, the Five Elders dropped all of their previous tasks and advanced on the Iron Giant after hearing York's theory. The Elders found it, surrounded it, and realized it was the same machine that had attacked Mary Geoise two hundred years ago. Topman Warcury stepped in and attacked the Iron Giant after he heard Vegapunk start to explain what the letter "D" meant. As a result, the transmission ended, and the robot fell apart.

While wondering where Joy Boy was, the giant ultimately fell into the sea and sank to the ocean floor. It eventually realized Luffy's role after reacting to the Drums of Liberation brought on by another of his metamorphoses. Emet, recalling something Joy Boy had said to it earlier, leapt up out of the water and punched Warcury, shattering one of his tusks and preventing the Elder from crashing with the ship of the Giant Warrior Pirates.

Emet ultimately managed to communicate with Luffy, whom it named Joy Boy, after fully emerging from the sea. Through the Voice of all things, Luffy heard its voice and its desire to help, but he didn't know why or that it was an ally. Emet then got prepared to use one of its weapons, but it didn't work because they were too old to be used. Shepherd Ju Peter cut off one of Emet's arms as a result of the failure, but it managed to stay upright and blocked the Elders' path.

Soon after that, Warcury hit Emet once more, which left the robot seriously injured. Emet asked the young pirate his name and apologized to Luffy for thinking he was Joy Boy. Emet released an enormous burst of Supreme King Haki that Joy Boy had sealed inside its chassis years earlier after learning that Luffy was a carrier of the Will of D. He thanked him for allowing it to hear the Drums of Liberation one more time. Emet recalled a moment when it communicated to Joy Boy before shutting down as the Haki explosion pushed the Five Elders back to Mary Geoise. Luffy and his companions fled Egghead, and he gave the powered-down Emet one more yell of gratitude.

Emeth’s Personality

Emet appears completely sentient and emotionally capable, even though he is a machine. It liked Joy Boy's company, was devoted to him, and wanted to elevate him to a position of authority. It apologized to Joy Boy for not completing its initial purpose after waking up from its sleep, and then it began searching for him out of nostalgia.

Emeth’s Appearance

Emeth and Luffy.

Emet is a robot who is as tall as the Ancient Giants. Its face and lower body are covered by grills with vertical bars, and it has a horned helmet. Its left helmet horn broke off more than 200 years ago and is still missing. It used to wear fur-lined overalls around the Void Century, but since it attacked Mary Geoise, it has stopped wearing them. Shepherd Ju Peter chopped off its left arm and part of its shoulder during the conflict with the Five Elders.

Emeth’s abilities and powers

The full extent of Emeth's abilities is presently unknown since it ran out of energy before causing damage. It was thought to be well beyond the state of science at the time, but it was able to climb the Red Line. Though he was unable to duplicate the Iron Giant's enigmatic Ancient Energy power source, it later inspired Vegapunk's Vegaforce-01.

The "Drums of Liberation" are somehow able to power it up, although it is still unclear how it is connected. It was seen wandering through a huge fire and persistent attack from a Buster Call, apparently unbothered, demonstrating how resilient its armor is, protecting it from explosions and tremendous heat.

Emeth and Joy Boy.

When Emet realized that Luffy was actually Joy Boy, the robot quickly recovered from being easily knocked into the sea by Topman Warcury. Despite its size and weight, it leaped out of the water and punched Warcury hard enough to break off one of his tusks and cause the Elder to bleed, causing damage to his amazing hide that not even Luffy in his Gear 5 form could have done.

Since he was unable to find a location where people could use it from within, Luffy assumed that it is intended to travel on its own. Emet's ability to move and reason on its own proved that this deduction was accurate. Only those who can hear the Voice of All Things have been proven to be able to understand Emet's unique voice so far.

Emeth’s weapon and Haki knot

Emeth is shown attacking Mary Geoise while wielding some kind of polearm. Although the years it spent in ruins left its weapons inaccessible, Emeth appears to have formerly had some kind of weaponry mounted on its arms.

There was a time when the man named Joy Boy sealed a part of his Supreme King Haki inside Emet, which could be unlocked by untying a knot on its body. With Joy Boy's Haki in his possession, Emet could release it all at once in a huge burst. Emet chose to release the Haki at the end of the Egghead Arc because it was a weapon reserved for extreme situations and was powerful enough to travel far outside of Egghead and nullify the Five Elders' Devil Fruit transformation abilities.
