During Operation Utopia in Arabasta, Tony Tony Chopper learned from Matsuge about a friendly moving crab named Hasami. The crew used Hasami as emergency transportation to Alubarna, but Crocodile's interference forced Monkey D. Luffy to confront him directly. Hasami carried the group halfway before the Sandora River blocked their path.
Nami named the crab Hasami and attempted to motivate him to cross the river by belly-dancing. Despite their efforts, Hasami sank due to his aversion to water. Afterwards, he waved off the Straw Hats and returned to the outskirts of Rainbase.
Following the Straw Hats' victory over Baroque Works, Hasami was unharmed and back near Rainbase. Later, he was discovered by Ukkari Hot-Spring Island and served as a living "bus," transporting patrons through undersea tunnels.
Hasami is friendly and not at all aggressive. He's happy to trust and assist smaller creatures, even humans. Just like his friend Matsuge, Hasami finds human women interesting and gets excited when he sees them.
Hasami is a red-shelled crab, approximately the size of a small house, with a human-like mouth that appears to be in a perpetual leer. His claws are notably asymmetric, with the right claw being significantly larger than the left.
When assisting the Straw Hats, Hasami wore a pair of reins connected to the corners of his mouth and had a thick green matting atop his shell. It's unclear whether this matting was a natural part of his appearance or some form of covering.
Under the service of Ukkari Hot-Spring Island, Hasami now wears a bus driver's cap-shaped howdah carriage. This carriage is large enough to accommodate dozens of average-sized humans and is adorned with a scissors emblem on the "hatband."
Hasami is not just large but also really fast. This makes him great at carrying many people for long journeys. But like other crabs like him, he can't swim or handle water at all.
In addition to the One Piece manga and its anime adaptation, Hasami also appears as a non-playable character in:
Grand Battle! 2
Grand Battle! Swan Colosseum
One Piece: Pirates Carnival
One Piece Odyssey
The connection between scissors and crab claws is evident in the case of Inazuma. Initially designed as a crab Zoan, the concept evolved into a scissors-themed Paramecia Devil Fruit.
In reality, several "terrestrial" crab species primarily inhabit land but are capable of entering aquatic environments, showcasing the versatility of crab behavior.
