Hogback’s History

Hogback was once a renowned surgeon celebrated for miraculous operations, attracting patients worldwide. Despite his talents, he operated for wealth and fame, not out of charity. Annoyed by the constant demand for his services, he left the medical profession.

Additionally, Hogback was a long-time admirer of the famous actress Victoria Cindry. His love for her remained unrequited, as she rejected his marriage proposal due to having a fiance. Tragically, Cindry died in an accident ten years before Hogback's encounter with the Straw Hat Pirates. Devastated, he abandoned his medical career.

After meeting Gecko Moria, Hogback agrees to help create an undead army in exchange for Moria's promise to revive his love, Cindry. Hogback stole Cindry's corpse, and Moria implanted a shadow into it, bringing her back as a zombie. Since then, Hogback has served Moria by creating more zombies from stitched-up bodies.

Hogback's disappearance generated rumors, such as his kidnapping, leaving the medical community in an uproar and making his name legendary. Five years ago, Brook was captured, and Hogback used his shadow to revive the corpse of the Samurai Ryuma. When Brook returned, he learned from Hogback that salt was a weakness of the zombies.

Thriller Bark Arc

When Nami, Usopp, and Tony Tony Chopper arrived at his mansion, Hogback greeted them but failed to stop Victoria Cindry from throwing plates at Usopp. After permitting them to come inside, Hogback was left outside as Cindry shut the door.

Later, during dinner with the Straw Hats, Hogback claimed to be on Thriller Bark to study zombies to one day resurrect the dead. Chopper agreed to help, but Hogback warned him not to enter his laboratory. After the meal, Hogback met Absalom and Perona, learning about the Straw Hats' bounties and preparing for a big job.

Later, outside the mansion, Hogback questioned Absalom about the earlier commotion and discussed a big job after learning about the Straw Hats' bounties.

Afterward, while working on Zombie 741, Hogback was horrified by Cindry's behavior and shocked when Nami, Usopp, and Chopper, who had been spying, were attacked by Ryuma. Angry, Hogback declared the upcoming night attack on Thriller Bark's guests.

When Nami accused Hogback of reviving the deceased on Thriller Bark, he questioned her basis. Shocked by Nami revealing Cindry's obituary notice, Hogback demanded an explanation. He ordered Ryuma and Cindry to drag the Straw Hats into the shadow world.

Hogback then explained Ryuma's reputation as a legendary samurai who killed a dragon. As Ryuma used Hanauta Sancho: Yahazu Giri to knock out the Straw Hats, Hogback marveled at the technique's power.

After Monkey D. Luffy was captured and sent to Moria by the Spider Mice, Hogback joined the other members of the Mysterious Four to witness Luffy's shadow being extracted. He commented on Luffy's power and asked Perona about the status of Nami, Usopp, and Chopper, who had been transferred by the Risky Brothers.

When Absalom questioned if Hogback had harmed Nami, Cindry claimed she wouldn't come for him, amusing Hogback. He was surprised when Cindry said the same to him and shocked when Luffy escaped, although he noted Luffy's reliability. Eventually, Luffy was recaptured, and Moria extracted his shadow.

When Moria expressed his ambition to become the Pirate King, Hogback mentioned he had worked on Zombie 900 since he started working for Moria ten years ago. He believed that putting Luffy's shadow into it would create the strongest zombie in history. However, when a Spider Mouse reported Tararan's defeat, Hogback nervously noted that only "Humming" could do this. He theorized that more sacrifices would be made as they remained in the dark.

Wondering how the zombies' weakness had been exposed, he asked Cindry why she was in front of him. Later, he walked down the hall to Zombie 900's freezer, explaining its legendary reputation as a powerful leader. Hogback claimed it was the greatest zombie he had ever created, revealing the corpse of Oars inside.

After seeing Moria contract with Luffy's shadow, Hogback expressed a desire to do the same with Cindry's shadow so he could eat meals on plates. However, Cindry threatened to break his kneecaps. As Moria implanted Luffy's shadow into Oars and Oars awakened, Hogback admired Oars as a masterpiece, ignoring the appearance of Nami, Usopp, and Chopper from Kumashi.

After Oars escaped and explored Thriller Bark, Moria told Hogback they needed better marionettes with Oars on their side. Hogback was shocked to learn that the Straw Hats, who lost their shadows, had woken up and discovered how to purify zombies, rendering them unable to fight.

He ordered Hildon to get the General Zombies to fight back, but Hildon revealed they were attending Absalom's wedding. Hogback, angered, demanded Hildon stop the wedding, but Perona suggested using her Negative Hollows to weaken the Straw Hats so the Soldier Zombies could capture them. Hogback, assuring Moria everything was fine, requested control of two zombies for protection due to Absalom's unavailability.

A few minutes later, Hogback and Cindry encountered Luffy, Chopper, and Robin, who were looking for Moria. Unable to recognize Chopper in his full reindeer form, Hogback ordered Cindry to attack Luffy with plates. Shocked when Robin restrained Cindry with her powers, Hogback was further surprised to see Chopper transform into his normal form. He quickly composed himself, noting that Chopper was a Zoan user, and asked him to become a mario as he summoned Jigoro and Inuppe.

After Jigoro and Inuppe overpowered Chopper and Robin, Hogback boasted about the zombies not having memories of being their former selves and emphasized the absolute nature of commands for zombies. He then instructed Cindry to finish off the two Straw Hats. Chopper, expressing admiration for Hogback's claim about researching the resurrection of the deceased for others, received a dismissive response.

Hogback lamented his prodigy status, describing it as burdensome, and questioned Chopper's intent to teach him about being a doctor. Chopper countered, highlighting the zombies' lack of true life, prompting Hogback to insist that their movement equates to life. He then kicked Cindry to the ground and ordered her to lick the floor.

Hogback explained his past with Cindry, revealing his rejected marriage proposal and how he resurrected her with Moria's help after her death. He admitted to desiring her beauty and claimed she must be happy to live again.

Chopper opposed his actions, stating he couldn't let Hogback continue making zombies at the expense of others' misery. In response, Hogback ordered Cindry to kill Chopper and threatened to turn both Chopper and Robin into zombies. He laughed while disclosing that he enhanced Cindry's strength for combat, considering it proof of humanity's dream to resurrect the deceased.

Surprised by Chopper's assertion that humans have more freedom, Hogback commanded Jigoro and Inuppe to assist Cindry by eliminating anyone who interfered. However, he became confused when the two zombies started fighting each other.

Robin took advantage of the situation by manipulating Hogback into ordering the zombies to jump off the tower, infuriating him. Faced with Chopper's determination to defeat him, Hogback instructed Cindry to stall for time while he planned his escape. To his surprise, a tearful Cindry revealed her inability to move.

Angry at Cindry for not following his command despite being the one responsible for her soul and mobility, Hogback felt a sense of satisfaction when she started moving towards Chopper and Robin. As he attempted to run away, he was tackled by Chopper, whom he criticized for aspiring to be human despite being a beast.

Chopper countered by highlighting Luffy's different approach, and with Robin's help, lifted both Hogback and himself into the air. Panicking about the potential injury to his head in a fall, Hogback faced an impending suplex from Chopper. However, their confrontation was interrupted by Oars, who burst through the mansion walls. As Chopper abandoned his attack, Hogback and Cindry fell to the floor below.

Trapped under debris, Hogback ordered Cindry to rescue him, but his insults and frustration intensified when she found herself unable to move again. Ultimately, Oars unknowingly stepped on Hogback as he remained trapped and unheard beneath the rubble.

After Moria's defeat, Hogback woke up Absalom and briefed him on the situation. Determined not to die as a loser, Hogback asked Absalom about his plans. Later, the two departed Thriller Bark on a smaller boat with the defeated Moria.

Unable to find Perona, Hogback, heavily bandaged, shared news from Bartholomew Kuma regarding Blackbeard replacing Crocodile as a Warlord of the Sea. Hogback agreed to create a bride from a corpse for Absalom, who insisted on it being a human one.

Marineford Arc

After the war concluded, Hogback and Absalom rescued Moria from Donquixote Doflamingo.

Hogback’s Personality

Hogback is excessively arrogant and takes great pride in his reputation as a genius. Despite his medical skills saving numerous lives, he sees patients as a nuisance for the money they bring and belittles other doctors. This clashes with Tony Tony Chopper's belief that true doctors should save all patients.

Hogback dismisses death by using Moria's power to animate corpses, considering it a triumph. However, he overlooks that his undead creations lack their original personalities and are bound to Moria's will. Hogback abuses his creations and disregards the fate of those whose shadows were taken to create them.

Despite humorous situations with Cindry, he can be serious and strategic when needed, as seen in his request for zombie bodyguards when facing the Straw Hats. However, he displays gullibility when tricked by Robin during a confrontation.

Hogback’s Appearance

Hogback has a distinctive appearance with a round torso, thin arms, and legs. His face features a long nose, sharp canine teeth, and ears. He sports a wide, grinning mouth with a scar in the shape of a semi-circle above his eyes, along with slicked-back black hair. A black tattoo adorns the left side of his neck.

He wears a fishnet vest, purple leather pants, a thick black tie, purple gloves covering claw-like fingers, a white surgical mask under his chin, small black gold-rimmed sunglasses, and a violet feathery cape with a black interior. He completes his look with purple high-heeled boots.

In the past, when he met Victoria Cindry, Hogback donned a white double-breasted suit paired with an indigo shirt, gray pants, and a dark blond feathery cape. He styled his hair with a small swirl at the front. Accessories included a golden bangle, pearl bracelet on his right wrist, a silver bangle, ruby-chain bracelet on his left wrist, and rings with large jewels on each index finger and his left thumb, along with gold rings on other fingers.

During Brook's confrontation five years prior, Hogback wore his present-day outfit but had his hair in a chonmage style.

As a child, Hogback had a bowl-cut hairstyle, round eyes, and wore a simple white sweater with the word "genius" printed on it. He also had black gloves, pants, and shoes.

Hogback’s Abilities

Hogback lacks a Devil Fruit or notable combat abilities among the Mysterious Four. Instead, he relies on the zombies he created to fight, although he doesn't have absolute control over them; Moria is their true master.

Despite his disregard for human life, Hogback is a world-renowned surgeon known for miraculous operations. He treated countless patients, gaining fame and fortune. Moria sought his surgical skills to create the zombies on Thriller Bark and enhance creatures and objects.

Hogback also modified Absalom, Victoria Cindry, and Oars, showcasing his diverse abilities. His skills allowed him to preserve zombies for many years without decomposition

Hogback’s Relationship with Others

Gecko Moria

When Gecko Moria, then a Warlord of the Sea, asked for Hogback's help in creating an undead army, Hogback agreed with the condition that Moria would resurrect Victoria Cindry, the target of his affection.

Since then, Hogback has considered Moria his master, assisting in creating the zombie army and enhancing Absalom's physical power. He highly respects Moria's "miraculous" power, and Chopper noticed Hogback's preference for engaging in blasphemous experiments as a pirate's scientist rather than saving lives as a renowned surgeon.

Victoria Cindry

Hogback, once a devoted fan of actress Victoria Cindry, had an amicable relationship with her while she was alive. He proposed to her, but she rejected him due to having a fiance, leading to Hogback's heartbreak. After Cindry's death, Hogback, in his depression, abandoned his medical career.

Later, after allying with Moria, Hogback had Cindry's corpse reanimated. However, the revived Cindry had a different personality. Despite this, Hogback, who cared only for her physical beauty, made her his servant. Their relationship is often comedic and antagonistic, with Cindry humiliating Hogback in various ways.

Despite claiming to "love" Cindry, Hogback abuses and treats her brutally, often like a slave. He kicks her down, makes her lick the floor, and orders her to sacrifice herself without hesitation. His actions demonstrate how little he truly cares for her, even as a servant. Only when Chopper's words about humanity reach Cindry does her former will return, and she defies Hogback's orders.

Other Zombies

Hogback sees the zombies created with Moria's ability as a breakthrough in medical science and a successful form of resurrection. However, he lacks respect for them, treating them as slaves and disposable pawns. He also disregards the impact on the people whose shadows were taken to create these zombies, showing a lack of concern for their well-being.

Tony Tony Chopper

Chopper once admired Hogback for his legendary reputation as a doctor who performed "miraculous" operations. Despite not knowing him personally, Chopper defended Hogback against doubts and suspicions from Usopp and Nami.

Chopper believed Hogback's claim that studying zombies was for healing broken hearts. However, upon discovering Hogback's selfish motives and lack of respect for the living and the dead, as well as ridiculing Chopper's beliefs, Chopper loses all respect for him.

He refused to acknowledge Hogback as a true doctor and even tried to confront him physically, believing that what was inside him was worse than Hogback's zombies.

Medical Community

Despite being a highly respected world-famous surgeon, Hogback saw his patients as a nuisance, merely tolerating them for money and fame. He didn't enjoy saving lives for their sake, often mocking their pleas.

He considered other doctors incompetent. Despite his misanthropic views, he received numerous awards and statuses. His disappearance caused a major uproar in the medical community, turning him into a legendary figure.
