In the past, Ipponmatsu owned a Loguetown store selling weapons. Many pirates used to visit, hoping to venture into the Grand Line. But things changed when Smoker took over the Marine base on the island as only a few customers came by after that.
During this time, a swordsman named Zoro came to Ipponmatsu's shop. Tashigi, another swordswoman, also brought her sword, Shigure, for polishing. Initially polite to Zoro, Ipponmatsu wasn't too happy when he discovered Zoro only had Beli 100,000.
He even tried to trick Zoro into selling his valuable sword, Wado Ichimonji, for much less. However, Zoro refused, and Tashigi's arrival spoiled Ipponmatsu's plan.
Despite the rough start, Ipponmatsu was impressed by Zoro's skills. Surprisingly, he gave Zoro two swords, Sandai Kitetsu and Yubashiri. These were special to him, and he passed on his dream to Zoro.
Later, while cleaning, Ipponmatsu happily talked about a big poster of Zoro on the wall with someone named Ipponume.
Ipponmatsu is a clever person who tries to take advantage of Zoro's lack of knowledge about his sword price, but after seeing Zoro's skill, he changes and gives away the sword for free. He also loves his wife and is ready to do anything she asks him.
Ipponmatsu is an elderly man with distinct features. His black side hairs are notable, forming a wing-like appearance when viewed from a distance. There's a noticeable bald spot at the front of his head. His nose has a slightly red hue, adding character to his appearance. Ipponmatsu is often seen wearing a blue t-shirt. Notably, his eyebrows are connected to his hair, contributing to his unique look.
Ipponmatsu and his wife share a happy relationship. He affectionately calls her "honey" and "dear" and even takes the time to clean the bathtub for her. However, Ipponume, possibly a friend or someone acquainted with them, sees Ipponmatsu as a bit stingy.
When Ipponmatsu first meets Zoro, he underestimates him because of Zoro's small amount of money. However, his opinion changed when Zoro bravely tested the cursed Sandai Kitetsu sword. Impressed by Zoro's skills, Ipponmatsu not only gave him the sword for free but also believed he had entrusted his dream to Zoro. Even after two years, Ipponmatsu still admires Zoro, proudly displaying a large poster of him in his bath.
Ipponmatsu doesn't like the Marines in Loguetown, blaming them for the decrease in pirates and, consequently, his shop's customers. He especially dislikes Smoker, considering him a "monster" for his tough efficiency and powerful Devil Fruit abilities.
Additionally, he isn't too fond of Tashigi, Smoker's assistant, viewing her as a hazard due to her naive nature and clumsiness. Despite this, he regularly cleans Tashigi's sword, Shigure, during her time in Loguetown.
