History

Past

Jozu was raised in poverty and was born in West Blue. Because of his agility, he had to steal in order to survive and was never caught. When the Whitebeard Pirates first arrived in Wano Country thirty years ago, Jozu was one of them. After a brief dispute with Whitebeard, Kozuki Oden asked to join the crew before the shipwrecked group headed to civilization for supplies. Together with Oden and his retainers, the Whitebeard Pirates enjoyed a feast.

Oden was rejected each time he tried to join the crew. After a span of two weeks, Oden was absent when the Whitebeard Pirates attempted to depart Wano. The crew was shocked when Oden tied a chain around the Moby Dick's mast and was hauled along with the vessel as they were leaving. Izou was dragged along with Oden when he held onto the chain and Izou held onto Oden. Oden took up Whitebeard's challenge to hang onto the chain for three days in order to be admitted into the crew after Izou was brought on board.

The crew observed Oden's perseverance during the next three days. The crew started cheering on Oden when he had an hour left to finish the challenge. The Whitebeard Pirates had adventures with Oden after he had been accepted into the crew. Oden also assisted Toki and Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, who had stowed away on Moby Dick, in their adventures. When the Whitebeard Pirates landed on an island four years after Oden joined, they saw a disturbance that scared the animals as well.

After fighting the Roger Pirates for three days and three nights, the crew and conflict finally turned into a gift exchange. Following that, Oden and his family split up ways with the Whitebeard Pirates. Two years after Gol D. Roger's execution, Jozu was on board Whitebeard's ship when Shiki paid her a visit after managing to escape Impel Down. When Fish-Man Island became Whitebeard's territory, Jozu was there.

Portgas D. Ace made the decision to look for Blackbeard and hold him accountable for his actions after Thatch's murder at the hands of Marshall D. Teach. Ace did not want to hear Whitebeard tell him not to go, but he was uncomfortable and said as much. Jozu was among the crew members who voiced opposition to Ace abandoning the ship to pursue Teach, but their protests were ineffective.

Jaya Arc

Jozu observed while Rockstar brought a letter to Whitebeard from Shanks.

Enies Lobby

Jozu said that Shanks' spirit was still as strong as ever, showing, Marco, that he knew exactly what would happen when he boarded their ship.

Marineford Arc

Jozu arrived in Marineford to save Ace from execution along with the other Whitebeard Pirates. Every commander of the division, including him and Marco, was prepared for battle. The greatest swordsman in history, Dracule Mihawk, attempted to hit Moby Dick and Whitebeard with the strongest slash in history.

Jozu, however, was able to block the attack by turning it into a diamond. His efforts to destroy a section of ice and throw a massive iceberg at the Marineford giants were quickly neutralized by Akainu's magma Devil Fruit abilities.

But soon after, Monkey D. Luffy's ineffective attack turned out to be somewhat helpful. After Crocodile's attempt to kill Whitebeard, he unexpectedly attacked and delivered a devastating blow. Donquixote Doflamingo, who had leaped on Jozu's back, stopped him in his tracks with his puppeteer power just before he could strike Crocodile again, and asked if the two could work together.

Jozu and Doflamingo were flung skyward by Crocodile's tremendous sandstorm when they declined. Upon witnessing Squard stab Whitebeard, Jozu looked shocked. Jozu was spotted with his crewmates after Little Oars Jr. successfully crashed one of their ships through the Encircling Wall's opening and into the plaza.

Whitebeard later instructed him to prepare for their trump card. Jozu broke into the battle and broke Admiral Aokiji into pieces, telling his captain to continue forward as he tried to stop Whitebeard's advance. Reforming, Aokiji uttered Jozu's insulting phrase while still bleeding profusely, and they proceeded with their battle. Jozu called out Marco's name as he saw Marco being struck by Kizaru's lasers.

Aokiji then took advantage of Jozu's distraction and froze over Marco's arm. Not too long after, he was seen falling to the ground completely frozen. When Jozu fell, his right arm broke off from him because it had been frozen for a longer period of time than the rest of his body.

Jozu was eventually thawed out on the escape ship, where he was carried away by his fellow division commander Blenheim, sometime after Ace had been set free. But he was not present when Whitebeard and Ace died. On a New World island, Jozu and the other Whitebeard Pirates attend Ace and Whitebeard's funeral.

Timeskip

The remaining Whitebeard Pirates engaged the Blackbeard Pirates in combat a year after the battle of Marineford, but they were ultimately defeated. After their defeat, they fled and haven't been seen since.

Personality

Jozu in One Piece
Still from the anime

Jozu is a rough, reserved person who likes to give his crewmates information. He has been shown to be harsh with his enemies because he didn't hesitate to try hitting Crocodile again right after his initial hit.

Having defended Whitebeard and his crew on at least three occasions, he is devoted to them. This loyalty can be exploited because Aokiji freezes him the instant he becomes preoccupied with Marco's injuries at the hands of Kizaru.

Appearance

Jozu is a large, extremely muscular, dark-skinned, broad-chested, heavily armored man. His face is long, and his hair and beard are styled in black stripes. His face is long, and his hair and beard are styled in black stripes.

He wears dark armor, which has dark shoulder pads with red bolts, and his hairdo is remarkably similar to those worn by Aztec warriors. The green cuirass he wears on his chest is attached to his front and back by metal straps that cross both of his collarbones.

Afterwards, the cuirass took on a rusty red hue. Around his waist is an ornate, large golden belt, on what appears to be an Aztec-style green skirt with golden accents around the hem. In addition, he's wearing what appears to be matching black trousers and boots with large buckles in black and gold.

His right arm broke off when he fell during the battle at the summit because Aokiji froze him. Jozu didn't have armor twenty-two years ago instead, he had a much thinner neck and wore a black tank top and red sash.

Jozu used to be quite plump and round as a child. His legs were short and he wore big black dungarees with circular buttons on them. There was less of it on top of his head, but his hair was still in balls.

Jozu’s abilities, strengths, and fighting style

Jozu was in charge of all crew members beneath the commander rank in the Whitebeard Pirates. Jozu was one of his crew's strongest and most respected fighters; he could hold his own against both Marine admirals and Warlords of the Sea.

Being the strongest contender for the rest of the crew, the division he oversaw was specifically trained in combat. Another example of Jozu's strength of character is his refusal to back down in the face of the Emperor Shanks' devastating Haoshoku Haki blast.

Jozu possesses almost superhuman strength; he tore a large chunk out of a thick sheet of sea ice that was similar to an iceberg several hundred times his own size. Jozu has incredible speed and agility that match his brute strength, despite his massive frame. Currently, Jozu's speed, strength, and combine to make him especially dangerous for Logia users who were once content to absorb blows without retaliating.

Jozu enjoys using wrestling-style actions like suplexes and tackles. Jozu also possesses incredible durability, as shown when he faced a sandstorm that Crocodile unleashed while not in diamond mode and came out of it unharmed despite being in the storm's centre.

Jozu’s special abilities

Devil Fruit

The Kira Kira no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. This Fruit allows the user to transform their body into a diamond. The user's defense was greatly increased because a diamond is the hardest material on the planet. They have the ability to prevent practically any attack that is directed at them.

This fruit's weakness is that it seems to stiffen the user's body when they turn into diamonds, making it necessary to wait to turn back into a human body before moving normally. Though they are extremely tough, they are also very vulnerable to freezing. Jozu boosts his offensive and defense significantly by using his devil fruit abilities.

The density of his diamond body already enhances his attacks. He can also function well as a long-range combat barrier. His use of Busoshoku Haki combined with his devil fruit powers is stronger when applied to Logia Type users. He hasn't changed into a diamond yet.

Haki

Busoshoku Haki

In two different cases, Jozu is able to successfully attack and injure Logia users, demonstrating

his skill as a Busoshoku Haki user. He struck Admiral Aokiji first, shattering his ice form and causing the admiral to bleed from the mouth, and then Crocodile, sending him reeling from the force of his devastating surprise attack.

Kenbunshoku Haki

Jozu possesses the ability to use Kenbunshoku Haki.
